Visual enantiomeric recognition of amino acid derivatives in protic solvents

Various types of chiral host molecules 2-7 based on a phenolphthalein skeleton and two crown ethers were prepared for use in visual enantiomeric recognition, and we examined their enantioselective coloration in complexation with chiral amino acid derivatives 9-22 in methanol solution. Methyl-substituted host (S,S,S,S)-3 showed particularly prominent enantiomer selectivity for the alanine amide derivatives 11 and 12. A combination of methyl-substituted host (S,S,S,S)-3 with guest (R)-11 or (R)-12 developed a purple color, whereas no color development was observed with (S)-11 or (S)-12. On the other hand, phenyl-substituted host (S,S,S,S)-6 showed deeper coloration with a wide range of (S)-beta-amino alcohols compared to that seen with host (S,S,S,S)-6 and the corresponding (R)-beta-amino alcohols at 0 degrees C. Furthermore, absorbance inversion temperatures (AIT) were observed within the range of 0-50 degrees C in many cases.     

Characterization of the pH-dependent resonance Raman transitions of archaeal and bacterial Rieske [2Fe-2S] proteins

The pH-dependent resonance Raman (RR) spectral changes of the cytochrome bc1-associated, high-potential Rieske proteins have frequently been invoked to explain the redox-linked ionization behavior. We report herein RR spectral data of archaeal and bacterial Rieske proteins that directly demonstrate the pH-dependent changes near and above pKa,ox2, but not around pKa,ox1, of the visible circular dichroism (CD) transitions. The RR spectral changes are attributed to modification of the immediate [2Fe-2S] cluster environment due to deprotonation of some exchangeable amide groups in the polypeptide backbone, rather than previously assumed simple changes of the Fe-Nimid stretching vibrations.     

THE EFFECTS OF ULTRAVIOLET C ON in vitro NUCLEOSOME ASSEMBLY AND STABILITY

Abstract The effects of ultraviolet C (UVC) irradiation on nucleosome assembly and its stability were investigated quantitatively using an in vitro nucleosome assembly system comprising a plasmid DNA of pBR322 and core histones isolated from rat ascites hepatoma cells. Nucleosomal formation was estimated by analyzing the resulting DNA supercoils. When UVC-irradiated (3000 J/m²) DNA was used as a substrate for the nucleosome assembly system, the nucleosomal formation efficiency was reduced by half compared with nonirradiated DNA. On the other hand, when the reconstituted nucleosomes (minichromosomes) on the nonirradiated DNA were irradiated with UVC (3000 J/m²), about half each were disrupted and retained. These results indicate that it is difficult for UV-damaged DNA regions to supercoil around the histone octamers to form nucleosomes and that the histone octamers in the UV-damaged nucleosomes tend to be dissociated from DNA.     

Formation and structure of B24N24 clusters

Boron nitride (BN) nanocage clusters of B₂₄N₂₄ were synthesized and detected by laser desorption time-of-flight mass spectrometry. The B₂₄N₂₄ clusters consisted of 4-, 6- and 8-membered BN rings satisfying the isolated tetragonal rule, which was optimized by molecular orbital calculations. The electronic structure showed a bandgap energy of 4.9 eV, which is smaller than that of B₃₆N₃₆ cluster.     

An improved gravimetric method for determining oxygen in binary and ternary uranium oxides by addition of alkali or alkaline earth metal nitrate

A known amount of lithium or calcium nitrate solution is added to the sample powder which is then heated in air or oxygen. The oxygen in test samples of UO_2+x, Sr_0.1U_0.9O_{2 + x} and Sr_0.2U_0.5O_{2 + x} was determined with an estimated standard deviation of ± 0.002.     

Evaluation and application of internal standardization in atomic absorption spectrometry with electrothermal atomization

A new dual-channel system developed for use in atomic absorption spectrometry is used to assess the internal standard technique for electrothermal atomization. Cobalt was found to be a suitable internal standard for iron determinations, and is used for determination of 7—330 ng Fe ml^-1 in water samples. With use of the internal standard technique, fluctuations caused by atomizer variables are reduced and interferences from many cations are also decreased.     

Interpolymer complex between poly(ethylene oxide) and poly(carboxylic acid)

An interpolymer complex was prepared by mixing aqueous solutions of poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) and of a poly(carboxylic acid), i.e., poly(acrylic acid)(PAA), poly(methacrylic acid)(PMAA), or styrene-maleic acid copolymer(PSMA). The complexation mechanism was discussed on the basis of results of such experimental methods as viscosity, potentiometric titration, and turbidimetry. The hydrogen bond is primarily involved in these complexations, but the influence of hydrophobic interaction on complexation can not be ignored. If the degree of dissociation α of carboxylic acid or the degree of polymerization P_n of PEO was perceptibly changed, a stable complex was obtained at about α 0.1 or P_n (PEO) = 40 for PMAA, 200 for PAA. This fact indicates that more than a definite number of binding sites are necessary for a stable interpolymer complex to be formed and that cooperative interaction among active sites plays an important role in complex formation.     

Elimination of translational and rotational motions in nuclear orbital plus molecular orbital theory

The nuclear orbital plus molecular orbital (NOMO) theory was developed in order to determine the nonadiabatic nuclear and electronic wave functions. This study presents a formulation to remove the contamination of rotational motion as well as translational motion in the NOMO theory. We have formulated the translation- and rotation-free (TRF)-NOMO theory by introducing the TRF Hamiltonian. The principal moment of inertia, which is the denominator in the rotational Hamiltonian, is expanded in a Taylor series. The zeroth-order of the Taylor expansion corresponds to a rigid-body rotator. The first-order terms contribute the coupling between the vibration and the rotation. Hartree-Fock equations have been derived in the framework of the TRF-NOMO theory. Numerical assessments, which were preformed for H2, D2, T2, mu2 (muon dimmer), and H2O, confirmed the importance of the TRF treatment.     

Copper-catalyzed allylations of zirconocene intermediates generated from o-alkenyl or o-alkynylbenzyl ether derivatives and zirconocene-butene complex

o-Alkenyl or alkynyl benzylzirconocene intermediate, which was readily generated by the reaction of 2-alkoxymethylstyrene or 2-alkoxymethyl-1-(trimethylsilylethynyl)-benzene derivative with zirconocene-butene complex (Negishi reagent, "Cp2Zr"), reacted with allyl or propargyl halides in the presence of a catalytic amount of CuCl to give allylation or allenylation products. Conversion to Dane's diene, which is a key intermediate for estrone synthesis, was efficiently carried out by enyne olefin metathesis of the allylation products.     

Ethyl(methyl)dioxirane as an efficient reagent for the oxidation of nucleoside phosphites into phosphates under nonbasic anhydrous conditions

A convenient method for the oxidation of nucleoside phosphites into phosphates under nonbasic and nonaqueous conditions using commercially available ethyl(methyl)dioxirane has been developed. This oxidation is effective with both N-protected and N-unprotected strategies.
