Triply Linked Corrole Dimers

The oxidation of 10–10′ singly linked corrole dimers with DDQ at low concentration in CHCl₃ afforded meso–meso, β–β, β–β triply linked 2H‐corrole dimers (with two inner NH groups in each corrole unit), which exhibited characteristic ¹H NMR and absorption spectra attributable to their nonaromatic electronic networks. These 2H‐corrole dimers were reduced with NaBH₄ to aromatic 3H‐corrole dimers, which were unstable and easily oxidized back to the 2H‐corrole dimers upon exposure to air. Bis(zinc(II)) complexes of the 2H‐corrole dimers were synthesized and characterized as rare examples of nonaromatic zinc(II) corrole complexes.     

An intense terahertz radiation source at the Compact ERL

The Compact ERL is an energy recovery LINAC (ERL) test facility that is planned for KEK. The circumference of the recirculation path will be 70 m. Initially, the beam energy will be about 65 MeV and the current about 10 mA. Although the primary purpose of the machine is to aid the development of the key technologies that are essential for building an ultra-brilliant new synchrotron light source based on an ERL, the Compact ERL itself has great potential as an intense source of terahertz radiation. To generate the intense terahertz radiation, an electron bunch of a very short bunch length is required and bunch compression is inevitable. We discuss the parameters of the Compact ERL, present the results of a simulation of bunch compression, and make an estimate of the generated coherent synchrotron radiation.     

Rapid evaluation of molecular shape similarity index using pairwise calculation of the nearest atomic distances

Rapid evaluation method for obtaining molecular shape similarity index using pairwise calculation of the nearest atomic distance respected to the template atoms was investigated. This method for calculations of similarity indices remarkably reduced required time compared with hitherto methods (especially 2 or 3 orders of magnitude faster than the previous grid-based evaluation technique) and gave without clear loss of preciseness. The potential of these improvements and possible further enhancements are discussed.     

Quasi-solid-state dye-sensitized solar cells using room temperature molten salts and a low molecular weight gelator

A dye-sensitized solar cell fabricated using the room temperature molten salt, 1-hexyl-3-methylimidazolium iodide, iodine and a low molecular weight gelator as a quasisolid-state electrolyte showed a 5.0% light-to-electricity conversion efficiency under AM 1.5 irradiation, and high-temperature stability.     

Observation of D+(s)K- and evidence for D+(s)pi- final states in neutral B decays

We report the first observation of a B meson decay that is not accessible by a direct spectator process. The channel B(0)-->D(+)(s)K- is found in a sample of 85 x 10(6) BB; events, collected with the Belle detector at KEKB, with a branching fraction B(B(0)-->D(+)(s)K-)=(4.6(+1.2)(-1.1)+/-1.3) x 10(-5). We also obtain evidence for the B0-->D(+)(s)pi(-) decay with branching fraction B(B0-->D(+)(s)pi(-))=(2.4(+1.0)(-0.8)+/-0.7) x 10(-5). This value may be used to extract a model-dependent value of |V(ub)|.     

Tandem Cyclization of Alkynylmetals Bearing a Remote Leaving Group via Cycloalkylidene Carbenes

Treatment of terminal alkynes bearing a remote leaving group with MNR(2) (M = Li, Na, K) gives bicyclo[n.3.0]-1-alkenes (n = 3, 4). The tandem cyclization proceeds through a mechanism involving exo-cyclization of an alkynylmetal intermediate and intramolecular C-H insertion of the resulting carbenoid.     

A Facile Route to Indolo

Treatment of 1-(2'-bromobenzyl)-3,4-dihydroisoquinolines 2 in the presence of K(2)CO(3) in boiling DMF efficiently provided a variety of alkoxy-substituted indolo[2,1-a]isoquinolines 3. Application of this cyclization to 7-benzyloxyisoquinoline derivatives, followed by further elaboration of the resultant 2-benzyloxy-5,6-dihydroindolo[2,1-a]isoquinolines 16a,b, led to the formal synthesis of dibenzopyrrocoline alkaloids, (+/-)-cryptaustoline (1a) and (+/-)-cryptowoline (1b).
