Prominent electron transport property observed for triply fused metalloporphyrin dimer: directed columnar liquid crystalline assembly by amphiphilic molecular design

A triply fused copper porphyrin dimer, when site-specifically modified on its periphery with hydrophobic and hydrophilic wedges (1C12/TEG), self-assembles into a columnar liquid crystalline (LC) mesophase over a wide-temperature range from -17 to 99 degrees C but gives rise to an amorphous solid when modified with only hydrophobic (1C12/C12) or hydrophilic wedges (1TEG/TEG). A LC film of 1C12/TEG displays at 16 degrees C a top-class one-dimensional electron mobility (0.27 cm2/V x s), as evaluated from its maximum flash-photolysis time-resolved microwave conductivity.     

Very strong hydrogen bonds in a bent chain structure of fluorohydrogenate anions in liquid Cs(FH)2.3F

The structure of liquid Cs(FH)(2.3)F was revealed using a combination of high-energy x-ray and neutron diffraction measurements. We found that the strongest intermolecular H-F hydrogen bonds at an average distance of 1.36 A are accompanied by the formation of a high degree of bending of the oligomer chain in the melt, with [angle]FHF=150 degrees . A reverse Monte Carlo simulation showed that the average number of atoms per chain is 4.4. A detailed chain analysis of the atomic configuration revealed that (FH)(2)F(-) oligomer chains are the major entities in the liquid, and asymmetrical FHF(-) are formed owing to the strong H-F hydrogen bonds. The results suggest that an average of one or two HF molecules bond to each of the 11 fluorine atoms surrounding a cesium ion.     

Superionic Conduction in Co‐Vacant P2‐NaxCoO2 Created by Hydrogen Reductive Elimination

The layered P2‐Na_xMO₂ (M: transition metal) system has been widely recognized as electronic or mixed conductor. Here, we demonstrate that Co vacancies in P2‐Na_xCoO₂ created by hydrogen reductive elimination lead to an ionic conductivity of 0.045 S cm^?1 at 25 °C. Using in situ synchrotron X‐ray powder diffraction and Raman spectroscopy, the composition of the superionic conduction phase is evaluated to be Na_0.61(H₃O)_0.18Co_0.93O₂. Electromotive force measurements as well as molecular dynamics simulations indicate that the ion conducting species is proton rather than hydroxide ion. The fact that the Co‐stoichiometric compound Na_x(H₃O)_yCoO₂ does not exhibit any significant ionic conductivity proves that Co vacancies are essential for the occurrence of superionic conductivity.     

Swallow-tailed perylene derivative: a new tool for fluorescent imaging of lipid hydroperoxides

A swallow-tailed perylene derivative including a triphenylphosphine moiety was synthesized and applied to the detection and the live-cell imaging of lipid hydroperoxides. The novel probe, named Spy-LHP, reacted rapidly and quantitatively with lipid hydroperoxides to form the corresponding oxide, Spy-LHPOx, which emits extremely strong fluorescence (Phi approximately 1) in the visible range (lambda(em) = 535 nm, 574 nm). Spy-LHP was highly selective for lipid hydroperoxides, and the addition of other reactive oxygen species (ROS) including hydrogen peroxides, hydroxyl radical, superoxide anion, nitric oxide, peroxynitrite, and alkylperoxyl radical, caused no significant increase in the fluorescence intensity. The probe exhibited good localization to cellular membranes and was successfully applied to the confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) imaging of lipid hydroperoxides in live J774A.1 cells, in which lipid peroxidation was proceeded by the stimulation of 2,2-azobis(2-amidinopropane)dihydrochloride (AAPH). These findings establish Spy-LHP as a promising new tool for investigating the physiology of lipid hydroperoxides.     

Spontaneous vesicle formation of single chain and double chain cationic surfactant mixtures

The concentration vs composition diagram of aggregate formation of the dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide (DTAB) and didodecyldimethylammonium bromide (DDAB) mixture in aqueous solution at rather dilute region was constructed by analyzing the surface tension, turbidity, and electrical conductivity data and inspected by cryo-TEM images and dynamic light scattering data.
