Synthesis of 3-substituted 4H-1-benzothiopyran-4-ones

3-Substituted 2-phenyl-4H-1-benzothiopyran-4-ones (thioflavones) were prepared to test antimicrobial activity. It was found that 3-(phenyl)thiochromone derivatives (isothioflavones) were prepared by the Meerwein reaction of thiochromone with p-nitrobenzenediazonium ion. 3-(Formyl)thioflavone exhibits weak antimicrobial activity against Trichophytons and Candida.     

A rigorous control of logarithmic corrections in four-dimensional ϕ4 spin systems

Using Gawedzki and Kupiainen's rigorous block spin transformation method, we study critical phenomena in ⁴ spin systems in four dimensions. In Part I of this work we investigate in detail the renormalization group trajectory of the system not exactly at the critical point.     

Aurilide, a cytotoxic depsipeptide from the sea hare Dolabella auricularia: isolation, structure determination, synthesis, and biological activity

The bioassay-guided fractionation of the cytotoxic constituents of the Japanese sea hare Dollabella auricularia led to the isolation of aurilide (1), a 26-membered cyclodepsipeptide. The gross structure of 1 was established by spectroscopic analysis including 2D NMR techniques. The absolute stereostructure was determined by chiral HPLC analysis of acid hydrolysates of 1 and by the enantioselective synthesis of a degradation product arising from a dihydroxylated fatty acid portion. The enantioselective synthesis of 1 was achieved in 12% overall yield (16 steps) and confirmed the absolute stereostructure of 1. The cytotoxicity of 1 was evaluated using a synthetic sample, which was found to exhibit potent cytotoxicity against HeLa S₃ cells with an IC₅₀ of 0.011 μg/mL. Further biological and pharmacological studies of 1 have been carried out by using synthetic 1.     

Ideal nonideality in adsorption of 2-aminoethanethiol and 2-mercaptoethane sulfonic acid to form electrostatically stabilized binary self-assembled monolayers on Au(111)

In formation of binary self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) composed of 2-aminoethanethiol (AET) and 2-mercaptoethane sulfonic acid (MES) by adsorption from an ethanol solution on Au(111), the adsorption shows nearly ideal nonideality in that the surface ratio of MES to AET in the SAM is unity and does not depend on the mixing ratio of MES to AET in the bathing ethanol solution used for preparing SAMs, chi(soln)MES, over the wide range of chi(soln)MES between 0.01 and 0.95. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy confirms that at least 80% of AET molecules adsorbed are protonated in this range of chi(soln)MES, indicating that the electrostatic interaction between positively charged AET and negatively charged MES is responsible to the observed nonideality. Correspondingly, there appears only one cathodic peak in a linear-sweep voltammogram of the reductive desorption of the SAM, having a narrow full width at half-maximum of about 20 mV. This suggests the presence of strong lateral attractive interaction between the adsorbed thiolates.     

Perfectly dissolved boron nitride nanotubes due to polymer wrapping

We report for the first time that boron nitride nanotubes (BNNTs) may be dissolved in organic solvents by wrapping them with a polymer. Transmission electron microscopy and cathodoluminescence studies indicate the strong pi-pi interactions between BNNTs and the polymer. A band gap ranging from 5.2 to 5.5 eV was documented for the BNNTs independent of their geometrical characteristics by using ultraviolet-visible absorption experiments on composite films and thin BNNT films prepared from solutions.     

Carbonyl methylenation of easily enolizable ketones

An organometallic reagent prepared from CH₂I₂, Zn, and TiCl₄ is effective for methylenation of the title ketones.     

Effect of monomer concentration on characteristics of methacrylic acid-grafted polyethylene film prepared by photografting

The effect of monomer concentration on photografting of methacrylic acid (MAA) onto linear low-density polyethylene (PE) film (thickness=30 μm) was investigated at 60 °C in water solvent together with the location of MAA-grafted chains. Xanthone was used as a photoinitiator which was coated on the film sample earlier. The higher percentage of grafting and graft efficiency were afforded for the system with the higher monomer concentration. The resultant MAA-grafted films were subjected to measurements of pH-responsive character and ability to adsorb cupric ion in order to understand the characteristics of function introduced. The grafted samples exhibited the pH-responsive character, where they shrank and swelled in acidic and alkaline media, respectively. The pH-responsive character of the grafted films was higher for the samples prepared in the system with a higher monomer concentration. Moreover, the grafted samples exhibited the ability to adsorb cupric ion, and the ability was reduced when the sample was prepared in the system with a higher monomer concentration. The different extents of the pH-responsive character and ability to adsorb cupric ion of the resulting grafted PE films were discussed in terms of location of grafted chains in the film substrate, which was determined by a scanning electron microscope and an attenuated total reflection infrared spectroscopy.     

Four new triterpene glycosides from Thalictrum squarrosum

Four new triterpene glycosides were isolated from the dried aerial parts of Thalictrum squarrosum (Ranunculaceae). They were designated as squarroside I, being a cycloartane-type glycoside, and squarrosides II, III and IV, being oleanene-type glycosides. Their structures were established by using two dimensional (2D) NMR techniques.
