Nonlinear whispering-gallery modes in a microellipse cavity

We study theoretically the effect of deformed microelliptical cavities on lasing characteristics. We show that the transition of stationary lasing states from unidirectional rotational waves to a mixture of clockwise and anticlockwise rotational waves occurs when the shape of a disk is deformed to that of an ellipse.     

Quasi-stadium laser diodes with an unstable resonator condition

We have observed lasing in a complicated eigenmode of a quasi-stadium laser diode with an unstable resonator consisting of two curved end mirrors obeying an unstable resonator condition and two straight sidewall mirrors. The laser was fabricated by application of a reactive-ion-etching technique to a molecular beam epitaxy-grown graded-index separate-confinement heterostructure single-quantum-well GaAs/AlGaAs structure. The far-field pattern shows that the lasing mode corresponds to the complicated lowest-loss mode obtained numerically by an extended Fox-Li method.     

Flow-injection spectrophotometric determination of acetyl-coenzyme A with immobilized phosphotransacetylase

Phosphotransacetylase (PTA) is immobilized on AF-Tresyl TOYOPEARL 650 gel and used on-line in a stainless-steel column (10 × 4 mm i.d.). CoA-SH liberated enzymatically from acetyl-CoA is reacted with Ellman's reagent [5,5′-dithiobis(2-nitrobenzoic acid)] in the carrier stream. The calibration graph for acetyl-CoA is linear from 4 × 10^?6 to 4 × 10^?4 M and the detection limits is 8 × 10^?7 M. The immobilized enzyme can be employed for over 4 months without any significant decrease in activity. The enzyme retains its activity in methanol even though the initial rate of reaction is decreased.     

Characterization of Ultra‐Thin Temperature‐Responsive Polymer Layer and Its Polymer Thickness Dependency on Cell Attachment/Detachment Properties

Ultra thin poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide) (PIPAAm) modified glass coverslips (PIAPAm‐CS) using electron beam irradiation exhibited a clear relationship between the polymer thickness and thermal cell adhesion/detachment behavior. The polymer thickness dependency and the characteristic of ultra thin PIPAAm layer, has been illustrated in terms of the molecular motion of the modified PIPAAm chains. PIPAAm‐CSs surfaces with various area‐polymer densities and thicknesses were characterized by AFM and protein adsorption assay. The newly obtained results gave a further insight into the illustration. Finally, the future application of intelligent surfaces was discussed for fabricating tissue and organ.

Fresnel filtering of Gaussian beams in microcavities

We study the output from the modes described by the superposition of Gaussian beams confined in the quasi-stadium microcavities. We experimentally observe the deviation from Snell's law in the output when the incident angle of the Gaussian beam at the cavity interface is near the critical angle for total internal reflection, providing direct experimental evidence on the Fresnel filtering. The theory of the Fresnel filtering for a planar interface qualitatively reproduces experimental data, and a discussion is given on small deviation between the measured data and the theory.     

LR test for random-effects covariance structure in a parallel profile model

We consider a parallel profile model which is useful in analyzing parallel growth curves of several groups. The likelihood ratio criterion for a hypothesis concerning the adequacy of a random-effects covariance structure is obtained under the parallel profile model. The likelihood ratio criterion for the hypothesis in the general one-way MANOVA model is also obtained. Asymptotic null distributions of the criteria are derived when the sample size is large. We give a numerical example of these asymptotic results.     

Synthesis, structure and inclusion properties of cone-tris{[(5′-methyl-2,2′-bipyridyl)-5-yl]oxycarbonylmethoxy}hexahomotrioxacalix[3]arene

Hexahomotrioxacalix[3]arene having [(5′-methyl-2,2′-bipyridyl)-5-yl]oxycarbonylmethoxy group with cone conformation was prepared, which shows strong Ag⁺ affinity and acts as a ditopic receptor for Ag⁺ and nBuNH₃ ⁺. A conformational change of 2,2′-bipyridyl moiety from the original outward orientation of the ring nitrogen to the inside orientation toward the thiacalixarene cavity was observed in the process of Ag⁺ complexation.     

Interplay of olefin metathesis and multiple hydrogen bonding interactions: covalently cross-linked zippers

Hydrogen-bonded zippers bearing terminal alkene groups were treated with Grubbs' catalyst, leading to covalently cross-linked zippers without violating H-bonding sequence specificity. The yield of a cross-linked zipper depended on the stability of its H-bonded precursor, with a weakly associating pair giving reasonable yields only at high concentrations while strongly associating pairs showed nearly quantitative yields. The integration of thermodynamic (H-bonding) and kinetic (irreversible C═C bond formation) processes suggests the possibility of developing many different covalent association units for constructing molecular structures based on a self-assembling way.
