DESIGN AND PHOTOFUNCTIONS OF DENDRIMER-ENCAPSULATED POLY(PHENYLENEETHYNYLENE)S

A series of dendrimer-encapsulated poly(phenyleneethynylene)s 4～6 were Synthesize d. The light-harvesting antenna functions of dendrimer frameworks together with the blue-light emitting activities of 4～6 were highlighted.     

Highly soluble [1]benzothieno[3,2-b]benzothiophene (BTBT) derivatives for high-performance, solution-processed organic field-effect transistors

2,7-Dialkyl[1]benzothieno[3,2-b]benzothiophenes were tested as solution-processible molecular semiconductors. Thin films of the organic semiconductors deposited on Si/SiO2 substrates by spin coating have well-ordered structures as confirmed by XRD analysis. Evaluations of the devices under ambient conditions showed typical p-channel FET responses with the field-effect mobility higher than 1.0 cm2 V-1 s-1 and Ion/Ioff of approximately 10(7).     

PNA for one-base differentiating protection of DNA from nuclease and its use for SNPs detection

By the combination of peptide nucleic acid (PNA) with single-stranded DNA specific nucleases, alteration of a single base to another in DNA has been detected with high accuracy. Only the DNAs in DNA/PNA duplexes involving a mismatch are efficiently hydrolyzed by these enzymes, whereas fully matching sequences are kept intact. This difference is visually scored by adding 3,3'-diethylthiadicarbocyanine, which changes its color from blue to purple upon binding to DNA/PNA duplexes. These findings are applied to the convenient and straightforward detection of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs). When the target site in the sample DNA is completely complementary with the PNA, a notable amount of DNA/PNA duplex remains and thus the solution exhibits purple color. In the presence of even one mismatch between PNA and DNA, however, the DNA is completely digested by the enzyme and therefore the dye shows its intrinsic blue color. The SNPs in the apolipoprotein E gene of human DNA have been successfully genotyped by this method.     

Cyanide-Free One-Pot Synthesis of Methacrylic Esters from Acetone

Methacrylic esters, represented by methyl methacrylate (MMA), are widely used as commodity chemicals. Here, the one-pot synthesis of methacrylic esters from acetone, a haloform and alcohols in the presence of an organic base is described. Using DBU as the organic base for the reaction of acetone, chloroform and methanol in acetonitrile afforded MMA in 66 % yield. When the solvent was replaced by benzonitrile, the product MMA was successfully purified by distillation. Applicability of this process to various alcohols was also investigated to show ethyl, phenyl, CF₃CH₂, and n-C₆F₁₃CH₂CH₂ esters were obtained in moderate yields. The use of bromoform instead of chloroform resulted in the improvement of the yield, for example, methyl and n-C₆F₁₃CH₂CH₂ esters up to 81 and 70 %, respectively. The reaction with deuterated starting materials acetone-d₆ and MeOH-d₄, with DBU in acetonitrile afforded deuterated MMA (MMA-d₈) in 70 % yield.     

High‐Pressure Synthesis of A2NiO2Ag2Se2 (A=Sr,Ba) with a High‐Spin Ni2+ in Square‐Planar Coordination

Square‐planar coordinate Ni²⁺ ions in oxides are exclusively limited to a low‐spin state (S=0) owing to extensive crystal field splitting. Layered oxychalcogenides A₂Ni^IIO₂Ag₂Se₂ (A=Sr, Ba) with the S=1 NiO₂ square lattice are now reported. The structural analysis revealed that the Ni²⁺ ion is under‐bonded by a significant tensile strain from neighboring Ag₂Se₂ layers, leading to the reduction in crystal field splitting. Ba₂NiO₂Ag₂Se₂ exhibits a G‐type spin order at 130 K, indicating fairly strong in‐plane interactions. The high‐pressure synthesis employed here possibly assists the expansion of NiO₂ square lattice by taking the advantage of the difference in compressibility in oxide and selenide layers.
