Current-voltage characteristics of charge-ordered organic crystals

The current-voltage characteristics of layered organic crystals theta-(BEDT-TTF)2MZn(SCN)4 (M = Cs, Rb) follow the power law with a large exponent (e.g., 8.4 at 0.29 K for M = Cs) over a wide range of currents in the low-temperature insulating state. The power-law characteristics are attributed to electric field-induced unbinding of electron-hole pairs that are thermally excited in the background of the two-dimensional charge order. The magnitude of crossover electric fields from Ohmic to the power-law characteristics indicates that the electron-electron Coulomb interaction is significantly long-ranged: The screening length is greater than 10 molecule sites.     

Permutation complexity via duality between values and orderings

We study the permutation complexity of finite-state stationary stochastic processes based on a duality between values and orderings between values. First, we establish a duality between the set of all words of a fixed length and the set of all permutations of the same length. Second, on this basis, we give an elementary alternative proof of the equality between the permutation entropy rate and the entropy rate for a finite-state stationary stochastic processes first proved in [J.M. Amigó, M.B. Kennel, L. Kocarev, The permutation entropy rate equals the metric entropy rate for ergodic information sources and ergodic dynamical systems, Physica D 210 (2005) 77-95]. Third, we show that further information on the relationship between the structure of values and the structure of orderings for finite-state stationary stochastic processes beyond the entropy rate can be obtained from the established duality. In particular, we prove that the permutation excess entropy is equal to the excess entropy, which is a measure of global correlation present in a stationary stochastic process, for finite-state stationary ergodic Markov processes.     

Electrons and holes in HgTe and Hg0.82Cd0.18Te with controlled deviations from stoichiometry

The deviations from the stoichiometric composition of HgTe and Hg_0.82Cd_0.18Te crystals have been controlled by heat treatment under Hg vapor pressure. The magnetic field dependence of the Hall coefficient always shows the presence of two different sets of electrons and one set of holes. A low mobility electron is shown to belong to the conduction band. Vapor pressure dependence of hole concentration in HgTe shows that the concentration of nonstoichiometric defects decreases with increasing Hg vapor pressure, but the hole concentration is always higher than the electron concentration. In the case of Hg_0.82Cd_0.18Te, the electron concentration exceeds the hole concentration at high Hg vapor pressures. The dependence of the conduction band electron mobility in HgTe upon carrier density shows that the scattering by holes and impurities is predominant. In Hg_0.82Cd_0.18Te, however, optical phonon scattering is dominant when the deviation from stoichiometry is small and the effect of residual impurities can be neglected, and scattering by holes is dominant when the hole concentration is over $\text{10}{}^{17}\text{cm}{}^3$.     

Structure in the emission from pyrene evaporated films

Emission spectra and decay times of fluorescence of pyrene thin films prepared by evaporation onto substrates at liquid nitrogen temperature were measured. Structure in the emission from films warmed slowly up to higher temperature is found to the higher energy side of the excimer emission band. The decay time is about 410 ns at temperatures between 110 K and 210 K. But the emission from the film warmed up to a temperature above 210 K shows only the excimer emission. These results are discussed in relation to an amorphous structure in the pyrene evaporated thin film.     

Core-level photoemission of the Si(1 1 1)– -Ag surface using synchrotron radiation

The evolution of Si 2p core-level photoemission during a structural conversion from the Si (1 1 1)– -Ag to the Si(1 1 1)– -Ag superstructures induced by Ag adatoms adsorption at 140 K was studied using synchrotron radiation. The component from the top-layer Si-trimer atoms on the former surface was found to split into two components in the latter surface. The result is discussed in terms of a relaxation in some of the Si trimers induced by Ag adatoms sitting on the nearby Ag triangles of the -Ag substrate. The intensity ratio between the split components is a key to exclude some structure models proposed so far for the phases.

Design of chiral bifunctional secondary amine catalysts for asymmetric enamine catalysis

A series of binaphthyl-based secondary amine catalysts containing various functional groups have been designed as new chiral bifunctional amine catalysts. These chiral organocatalysts have been successfully applied to several asymmetric reactions via enamine intermediates and exhibit unique reactivity and selectivity in comparison with proline and its derivatives.     

Influences of Acidic Conditions on Formazan Assay: A Cautionary Note

Formazan assay has been used for several decades to evaluate metabolic activity of eukaryotic and prokaryotic cells. In particular, it has been often applied for quantitative assessment of viable cells under acidic circumstances caused by, e.g., ischemia and hypoxia. However, little attention has been paid to the influence of acidic pH on formazan assays. We found that acidic culture conditions significantly affect outcomes of the assays. Absorbance of tetrazolium–formazan decreased in a pH-dependent manner without affecting cell viability. This nonspecific effect was ascribed to influences of acidic pH on the production of formazan. Replacement of culture media to fresh medium at physiologic pH partially overcame this problem. The influence of acidic culture conditions should be carefully considered when formazan assays are used for the assessment of viable cells under various experimental situations.
