Empirical parameters of lewis acidity and basicity for aqueous binary solvent mixtures

Empirical parameters of Lewis acidity, E^N_T, introduced by Reichardt et al., and Lewis basicity, B_KT , introduced by Kamlet and Taft, have been determined for mixtures of water with ten organic solvents. In the case of water/alcohol mixtures a distinct dependence between these acidity and basicity parameters have been found. For the other solvent mixtures the E^N_T on B_KT dependence is more complex even if these parameters are purified from non-specific solute/solvent interactions.

Photobleaching of melanosomes from retinal pigment epithelium: II. Effects on the response of living cells to photic stress

Melanosomes of the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) are long lived organelles that may undergo photobleaching with aging, which can diminish the antioxidant efficiency of melanin. Here, isolated porcine RPE melanosomes were experimentally photobleached with visible light to simulate aging and compared with untreated granules or control particles (black latex beads) for their effects on the survival of photically stressed ARPE-19 cultures. Particles were delivered to cultures for uptake by phagocytosis then cells were exposed to violet light and analyzed by a new live cell imaging method to identify the time of apoptotic blebbing as a dynamic measure of reduced cell survival. Results indicated that untreated melanosomes did not decrease photic injury to ARPE-19 cells when compared with cells lacking particles or with cells containing control particles, as might be expected if melanin performed an antioxidant function. Instead cells with untreated melanosomes showed reduced survival indicated by an earlier onset of blebbing and a lower fraction of surviving cells after photic stress. Cell survival was reduced even further in stressed cells containing melanosomes that were photobleached, and survival decreased with increasing photobleaching time. Photobleaching of RPE melanosomes therefore makes cells containing them more sensitive to light-induced cytotoxicity. This observation raises the possibility that aged melanosomes increase RPE cell photic stress in situ, perhaps contributing to reduced tissue function and to degeneration of the adjacent retina that the RPE supports. How melanosomes (photobleached or not) interact with their local subcellular environment to modify RPE cell survival is poorly understood and is likely determined by the physicochemical state of the granule and its constituent melanin. The live cell imaging method introduced here, which permitted detection of a graded effect of photobleaching, provides a sensitive bioassay for probing the effects of melanosome modifications.     

Solvent extraction of Cu,Mo, V,and U from leach solutions of copper ore and flotation tailings

A micro-cloud point extraction method was discussed for preconcentration and spectrophotometric quantification of U(VI). The method depends on complex formation between U(VI) and 2-(4-sulphophenyloazo)-1,8-dihydroxy-3,6-naphtalenedisulphonic acid (SPADNS) at pH 7.0 and subsequent extraction of the complex in a mixed surfactant medium (cethyltrimethyl ammonium bromide and Triton X-114). The separation was carried out in the presence of 1% Na₂SO₄ at room temperature. The calibration curve was linear up to 3000 µg L^?1. The enrichment factor, detection limit and precision were 16.0, 1.05 µg L^?1, and 2.3%, respectively. The method was employed for the determination of U(VI) in real samples with different matrices.     

Low temperature crystal and molecular structure of nitrobenzene

The crystal and molecular structure of nitrobenzene was determined at 103 K by X-ray diffraction, yieldingR=0.034 and a highly precise geometry of the molecule (esds of bond lengths 0.001 Å and bond angles 0.1°). The bond angles in the ring agree very well with additive scheme based on angular substituent parameters. X-X electron density maps support the view that the C-N bond does not exhibit-character, and, hence, the nitro group interacts with the ring mostly by inductive effects.

Existence of positive solutions to third order differential equations with advanced arguments and nonlocal boundary conditions

We use a fixed point theorem due to Avery and Peterson to establish the existence of at least three non-negative solutions of some nonlocal boundary value problems to third order differential equations with advanced arguments. An example is given to illustrate the main results.     

Exact penalty functions method for mathematical programming problems involving invex functions

In this paper, some new results on the exact penalty function method are presented. Simple optimality characterizations are given for the differentiable nonconvex optimization problems with both inequality and equality constraints via exact penalty function method. The equivalence between sets of optimal solutions in the original mathematical programming problem and its associated exact penalized optimization problem is established under suitable invexity assumption. Furthermore, the equivalence between a saddle point in the invex mathematical programming problem and an optimal point in its exact penalized optimization problem is also proved.     

Mean value in invexity analysis

In this paper, a generalization of the mean value theorem is considered in the case of functions defined on an invex set with respect to η (which is not necessarily connected).
