Sesquifulvalene Trapping as a [12+2] Adduct with Tetracyanoethylene

Sesquifulvalene (1) is a substance of considerable theoretical interest¹ which is expected to have a significant contribution to its structure from the dipolar resonance form 1b,² and hence an exceptionally low bond order for the central double bond. Although a wide variety of annelated and otherwise substituted sesquifulvalenes have been prepared and characterized,³ the parent substance has proved remarkably elusive. Very recently, a preparation of 1 in crystalline form has been reported, based upon elimination of an acetoxy-11,12-dihydrosesquifulvalene derivative.⁴     

Neo‐Fused Hexaphyrin: A Molecular Puzzle Containing an N‐Linked Pentaphyrin

The first neo‐confused hexaphyrin(1.1.1.1.1.0) was synthesized by oxidative ring closure of a hexapyrrane bearing two terminal “confused” pyrroles. The new compound displays a folded conformation with a short interpyrrolic C???N distance of 3.102 Å, and thus it readily underwent ring fusion to afford a neo‐fused hexaphyrin with an unprecedented 5,5,5,7‐tetracyclic ring structure. Furthermore, coordination of Cu^II triggered a ring opening/contracting reaction to afford a Cu^II complex of an N‐linked pentaphyrin derivative. The roles of reactive N? C bonds in the porphyrinoid macrocycles were demonstrated.     

N-Confused Phlorin-Prodigiosin Chimera: meso-Aryl Oxidation and π-Extension Triggered by Peripheral Coordination

An N-confused phlorin isomer bearing a dipyrrin moiety at the α-position of the confused pyrrole ring ( 1 ) was synthesized. Pd^II and B^III coordination at the peripheral prodigiosin-like moiety of 1 afforded the corresponding complexes 2 and 3 . Reflux of 2 in triethylamine (TEA) converted the meso-phenyl into the Pd^II-coordinating phenoxy group to afford 4 . Under the same reaction conditions, TEA was linked to the α-position of the dipyrrin unit in 3 as an N,N-diethylaminovinyl group to afford 5 . Furthermore, peripheral coordination of B^III in 3 and 5 improved the planarity of the phlorin macrocycle and thus facilitated the coordination of Ag^III at the inner cavity to afford 3-Ag and 5-Ag , respectively. These results provide an effective approach for developing unique porphyrinoids through peripheral coordination.     

Half‐Sandwich Iridium Complexes Bearing a Diprotic Glyoxime Ligand: Structural Diversity Induced by Reversible Deprotonation

Synthesis and deprotonation reactions of half‐sandwich iridium complexes bearing a vicinal dioxime ligand were studied. Treatment of [{Cp*IrCl(μ‐Cl)}₂] (Cp*=η⁵‐C₅Me₅) with dimethylglyoxime (LH₂) at an Ir:LH₂ ratio of 1:1 afforded the cationic dioxime iridium complex [Cp*IrCl(LH₂)]Cl ( 1 ). The chlorido complex 1 undergoes stepwise and reversible deprotonation with potassium carbonate to give the oxime–oximato complex [Cp*IrCl(LH)] ( 2 ) and the anionic dioximato(2?) complex K[Cp*IrCl(L)] ( 3 ) sequentially. Meanwhile, twofold deprotonation of the sulfato complex [Cp*Ir(SO₄)(LH₂)] ( 4 ) resulted in the formation of the oximato‐bridged dinuclear complex [{Cp*Ir(μ‐L)}₂] ( 5 ). X‐ray analyses disclosed their supramolecular structures with one‐dimensional infinite chain ( 1 and 2 ), hexagonal open channels ( 3 ), and a tetrameric rhomboid ( 4 ) featuring multiple intermolecular hydrogen bonds and electrostatic interactions.     

Incoherent noise and quantum information processing

Incoherence in the controlled Hamiltonian is an important limitation on the precision of coherent control in quantum information processing. Incoherence can typically be modeled as a distribution of unitary processes arising from slowly varying experimental parameters. We show how it introduces artifacts in quantum process tomography and we explain how the resulting estimate of the superoperator may not be completely positive. We then go on to attack the inverse problem of extracting an effective distribution of unitaries that characterizes the incoherence via a perturbation theory analysis of the superoperator eigenvalue spectra.     

Highly efficient catalytic system for hydrosilylation of ketones with iron(II) acetate-thiophenecarboxylate

A combination of a catalyst derived from ferrous acetate and sodium thiophene-2-carboxylate efficiently promoted hydrosilylation of aromatic and aliphatic ketones to give the corresponding secondary alcohols in high yields with extremely high selectivity.
