High levels of soluble herpes virus entry mediator in sera of patients with allergic and autoimmune diseases

Herpes virus entry mediator (HVEM) is a newly discovered member of the tumor necrosis factor receptor (TNFR) superfamily that has a role in herpes simplex virus entry, in T cell activation and in tumor immunity. We generated mAb against HVEM and detected soluble HVEM (SHVEM) in the sera of patients with various autoimmune diseases. HVEM was constitutively expressed on CD4(+) and CD8(+) T cells, CD19(+) B cells, CD14(+) monocytes, neutrophils and dendritic cells. In three-way MLR, mAb 122 and 139 were agonists and mAb 108 had blocking activity. An ELISA was developed to detect sHVEM in patient sera. sHVEM levels were elevated in sera of patients with allergic asthma, atopic dermatitis and rheumatoid arthritis. The mAbs discussed here may be useful for studies of the role of HVEM in immune responses. Detection of soluble HVEM might have diagnostic and prognostic value in certain immunological disorders.     

Stereodivergent and regioselective synthesis of 3,4-cis- and 3,4-trans-pyrrolidinediols from alpha-amino acids

[reaction: see text] Highly stereodivergent Woodward-Prevost reaction applied to iodoacetates derived from homochiral alpha-amino acids afforded enantiopure 3,4-cis- and 3,4-trans-pyrrolidinediol derivatives, with control over the protecting group, allowing for differential protection.     

Total synthesis of (+)-macquarimicin A

The first total synthesis of (+)-macquarimicin A (1), a novel inhibitor of neutral sphingomyelinase (N-SMase) with antiinflammatory activity, has been accomplished. The present work determined the absolute configuration of (+)-1 and revised the C(2)-C(3) geometry to be Z. The synthesis features a transannular Diels-Alder reaction, which constructed the tetracyclic framework stereoselectively, and a convergent and efficient synthetic pathway, which afforded (+)-macquarimicin A (1) in 27 steps (longest linear sequence) with 9.9% overall yield.     

Convenient Synthesis of Phenyl Pyridyl-Ethers Utilizing Fluoride Ion

Aryl pyridyl ethers were prepared from phenols and active halopyridines under essentially neutral condition via fluoride ion assisted reaction.     

Hydrogen production and photocatalytic activity of g-C3N4/Co-MOF (ZIF-67) nanocomposite under visible light irradiation

Herein, cobalt (Co)-based metal–organic zeolitic imidazole frameworks (ZIF-67) coupled with g-C₃N₄ nanosheets synthesized via a simple microwave irradiation method. SEM, TEM and HR-TEM results showed that ZIF-67 were uniformly dispersed on g-C₃N₄ surfaces and had a rhombic dodecahedron shape. The photocatalytic properties of g-C₃N₄/ZIF-67 nanocomposite were evaluated by photocatalytic dye degradation of crystal violet (CV), 4-chlorophenol (4-CP) and photocatalytic hydrogen (H₂) production. In presence of visible light illumination, the photocatalytic dye results showed that 95% CV degradation and 53% 4-CP degradation within 80 min. The H₂ production of the g-C₃N₄/ZIF-67 composite was 2084 μmol g⁻¹, which is 3.84 folds greater than that of bare g-C₃N₄ (541 μmol g⁻¹).     

Linear Matrix Inequality Optimization Approach to Exponential Robust Filtering for Switched Hopfield Neural Networks

This paper is concerned with the delay-dependent exponential robust filtering problem for switched Hopfield neural networks with time-delay. A new delay-dependent switched exponential robust filter is proposed that results in an exponentially stable filtering error system with a guaranteed robust performance. The design of the switched exponential robust filter for these types of neural networks can be achieved by solving a linear matrix inequality (LMI), which can be easily facilitated using standard numerical packages. An illustrative example is given to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed filter.
