Ground State Properties of the SSH Model

Ground state properties of the SSH model are studied. In particular, the uniqueness of the ground state is proven. As a consequence, characteristic spin structure of the ground state is revealed.     

Five new triterpenoid saponins from the roots of Platycodon grandiflorum

Five new triterpenoid saponins, platycoside H [3-O-beta-D-glucopyranosyl-(1-->6)-beta-D-glucopyranosyl-2beta,3beta,16alpha,23-tetrahydroxyolean-12-en-28-oic acid 28-O-beta-D-xylopyranosyl-(1-->4)-alpha-L-rhamnopyranosyl-(1-->2)-alpha-L-arabinopyranoside], platycoside I [3-O-beta-D-glucopyranosyl-(1-->6)-beta-D-glucopyranosyl-(1-->6)-beta-D-glucopyranosyl-2beta,3beta,16alpha,23-tetrahydroxyolean-12-en-28-oic acid 28-O-beta-D-xylopyranosyl-(1-->4)-alpha-L-rhamnopyranosyl-(1-->2)-alpha-L-arabinopyranoside], platycoside J [3-O-beta-D-glucopyranosyl-2beta,3beta,16alpha,23-tetrahydroxyolean-12-en-28-oic acid 28-O-beta-D-xylopyranosyl-(1-->4)-alpha-L-rhamnopyranosyl-(1-->2)-alpha-L-arabinopyranoside], platycoside K [3-O-beta-D-glucopyranosyl-(1-->3)-beta-D-glucopyranosyl-2beta,3beta,16alpha,23,24-pentahydroxyolean-12-en-28-oic acid], and platycoside L [3-O-beta-D-glucopyranosyl-(1-->6)-beta-D-glucopyranosyl-2beta,3beta,16alpha,23,24-pentahydroxyolean-12-en-28 oic acid], and three known triterpenoid saponins, platycoside F, platycoside B, and platycoside C, were isolated from the roots of Platycodon grandiflorum A. DC. Their chemical structures were elucidated on the basis of their spectral data and chemical evidence.     

Singlet oxygen in plants--its significance and possible detection with double (fluorescent and spin) indicator reagents

Direct detection of reactive oxygen species (ROS), especially singlet oxygen, in plants under stress conditions is of special importance, not only to identify primary events of oxidative damage, but also in studies exploring the potential role of ROS as signal molecules. Due to short life-times and diffusion distances of ROS, these tasks require highly reactive and selective indicator reagents, localized at the presumed site of production. In the present study, we compared four double sensors: ROS indicator reagents in which partial fluorescence quenching of a dansyl moiety occurs as a result of nitroxide radical formation from a sterically hindered amine constituent. Our experiments support the idea that shorter donor-acceptor distances within these molecules result in higher reactivity to ROS. The presence of a diethylaminoethyl side chain resulted in better selectivity to singlet oxygen: reagents lacking such substituent had an additional reactivity to superoxide anions, probably as a result of the formation of zwitterionic structures. Fluorescence localization studies of the indicator reagents in tobacco leaves and in Chlamydomonas cells show promising perspectives of their applications to plant stress studies.     

Spectral analysis of the semi-relativistic Pauli-Fierz hamiltonian

We consider a charged particle, spin , with relativistic kinetic energy and minimally coupled to the quantized Maxwell field. Since the total momentum is conserved, the Hamiltonian admits a fiber decomposition as H(P), P∈R³. We study the spectrum of H(P). In particular we prove that, for non-zero photon mass, the ground state is exactly two-fold degenerate and separated by a gap, uniformly in P, from the rest of the spectrum.     

Chiral vector determination of carbon nanotubes by observation of interference patterns near the end cap

We have observed clear interference images near the end caps of semiconducting carbon nanotubes with quasiarmchair and zigzag chiral vectors, using a scanning tunneling microscope. We performed a simple tight-binding calculation to simulate the interference patterns, in which Bloch states with k and -k wave vectors were superimposed. The calculations were able to reproduce the observed interference patterns. In addition, we demonstrated that the interference patterns can be categorized by the positions of k_{min} in the Brillouin zone that yield minimum energy in the conduction band, and can give information on the chiral vector of a carbon nanotube.     

Stable operation of a 300-m laser interferometer with sufficient sensitivity to detect gravitational-wave events within our galaxy

TAMA300, an interferometric gravitational-wave detector with 300-m baseline length, has been developed and operated with sufficient sensitivity to detect gravitational-wave events within our galaxy and sufficient stability for observations; the interferometer was operated for over 10 hours stably and continuously. With a strain-equivalent noise level of h approximately 5x10(-21)/sqrt[Hz], a signal-to-noise ratio of 30 is expected for gravitational waves generated by a coalescence of 1.4M-1.4M binary neutron stars at 10 kpc distance. We evaluated the stability of the detector sensitivity with a 2-week data-taking run, collecting 160 hours of data to be analyzed in the search for gravitational waves.     

Rheo-optical studies of high polymers. XIV. Study of the deformation mechanism in polymer blends of polypropylene with ethylene–propylene rubber

To clarify the deformation mechanism in polyblends of polypropylene with ethylene–propylene rubber having different compositions, simultaneous measurements of the infrared dichroism with stress and strain under a constant rate of strain of 1.64%/min have been carried out. The orientation function of the crystallographic c axis of polypropylene in the blends has been obtained as a function of strain ranging from 0 to 20% and of polypropylene content ranging from 0.3 to 1.0. These results have been compared with the temperature dependences of the dynamic Young's modulus and of the loss modulus, as well as of stress–strain curves for the same blends. The modulus data analyzed by Kerner's equation reveal the occurrence of phase inversion at polypropylene contents higher than about 0.5, and this is supported by the infrared dichroism data. The strong effect of quenching on crystalline structure and mechanical properties of pure polypropylene has also been elucidated.     

Further studies on the structure of polysaccharides from the lichen Flavoparmelia caperata (L.) Hale

A water-soluble polysaccharide called PC-2 was previously isolated from Flavoparmelia caperata (L.) Hale and assigned to alpha(1-3)(1-4)glucan. However, PC-2 separated into three components, PC-2A, PC-2B, and PC-2C (a single peak in HPLC, respectively) on further purification. Methylation analysis and (1)H- and (13)C-NMR spectroscopic studies suggested that PC-2A is composed of repeating units of [alpha-D-Glc1-3](3), : [alpha-D-Glc1-4](2), while PC-2B and PC-2C are partly branched galactoglucomannans consisting of (1-3)- and (1-4)-linked alpha-D-glucopyranosyl units as the main chain. In addition we confirmed that the polysaccharide fraction PB-2 from the lichen of the same genus, Flavoparmelia baltimorensis (Gyelink & Foriss) Hale, is identical to PC-2 based on the chemical and spectroscopic data.
