(Studies on AI-77s,microbial products with pharmacological activity) structures and the chemical nature of AI-77s

The structures of a novel gastroprotective substance AI-77-B and its analogues AI-77-C, D, F and G, which are produced by Bacillus pumilus, are described. Five of the asymmetric centers of AI-77-B have S absolute stereochemistry confirmed by X-ray in combination with chemical studies.     

Synthetic studies on the taxane skeleton: construction of eight-membered carbocyclic rings by the intramolecular B-alkyl Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling reaction

Construction of eight-membered carbocyclic rings via the intramolecular B-alkyl Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling reaction has been studied. This protocol proved its potency through the formation of the eight-membered ring possessing a quaternary carbon on its ring in high yield, affording promise of a new access to the eight-membered ring of Taxol. Preconcentration of copper, cadmium, and lead with a thiacalix[4]arenetetrasulfonate-loaded Sephadex A-25 anion-exchanger for graphite-furnace atomic-absorption spectrometry

A rapid column-adsorption method has been developed for concentrating traces of copper, cadmium, and lead in water prior to their determinations by graphite-furnace atomic-absorption spectrometry. The adsorbent used was prepared by loading a strongly basic anion-exchanger QAE-Sephadex A-25 (50 mg) with thiacalix[4]arenetetrasulfonate (20 mol). Two-hundredfold preconcentration of the analyte elements was achieved by passing 100 mL of sample solution (pH 8.0) through a column packed with the adsorbent (6 mm i.d.×7 mm high) at a flow rate of 10 mL min^–1 and by the subsequent elution with 500 L of aqueous nitric acid solution (1 mol L^–1). The practical applicability of the proposed method was evaluated by analyzing certified reference seawater samples.     

Synthesis of all stereoisomers of sulfinylcalix[4]arenes

All four stereoisomers of p-tert-butylsulfinylcalix[4]arene [4(rccc), 4(rcct), 4(rctt), and 4(rtct)], arising from the disposition of the four sulfinyl groups with respect to the mean plane of the four bridging sulfur atoms, have been prepared via oxidation of p-tert-butylthiacalix[4]arene (2) or its tetra-O-benzyl ethers 5 of defined conformations. Thus, treatment of 2 with 4.4 molar equiv of NaBO(3).4H(2)O gave the rtct and rctt isomers in 27% and 17% yields, respectively, while oxidation of cone 5 (5(C)) and partial cone 5 (5(PC)) proceeded stereoselectively to give, after debenzylation of the resulting tetrasulfoxides 12 and 15, the rccc and rcct isomers in 56% and 28% yields, respectively, based on 5. The sulfinylcalix[4]arenes 4 were treated with iodomethane in the presence of a base to give the corresponding tetramethyl ethers 16, the structures of which in regard to the disposition of the sulfinyl groups and the conformation of the phenol units were determined by X-ray crystallography. Also reported is the synthesis of all four conformational isomers of tetra-O-benzyl ether of 2 (5(C), 5(PC), 5(1,2-A), and 5(1,3-A)).     

Long-range jump versus stepwise hops: magnetic field effects on the charge-transfer fluorescence from photoconductive polymer films

Magnetic field effects on the charge-transfer (CT) fluorescence of a 1,2,4,5-tetracyanobenzene-doped poly(N-vinylcarbazole) thin film were investigated to clarify the primary process in photoconductive organic amorphous solid. The CT fluorescence increased with increasing magnetic field until 10 mT, and then it showed the dip around 40-50 mT. The hyperfine coupling mechanism observed in the low field and the level-crossing mechanism observed around 46 mT clearly indicate that the spin-conservative stepwise hole hops take place in the films. The boundary distance determined from the simulation based on the stepwise hopping model almost agreed with the interionic separation estimated within the Onsager analysis.     

Crystal Structures of Mono-, Di-, and Tri(p-tert-butyl)-thiacalix[4]arenes: Dimeric Self-inclusion Behavior

X-Ray crystal structures of the mono-, di-, and tri(p-tert-butyl)-substituted thiacalix[4]arenes (TC4As; 1, 2, and 3, respectively) have beendetermined. TC4As 1–3 adopt a cone conformation and form dimeric self-inclusion units in such a manner that phenol moieties are inserted into the cavity of each molecule. In all the crystal structures of 1–3, lateralface-to-face interactions exist between the phenol rings that do not bear a tert-butyl substituent, and seemingly, this molecular assembly stabilizes the formation of self-inclusion. TC4As 1 and 2 adopt a cone conformation with C₂ symmetry, leading to the formation of rim-to-rim intermolecular hydrogenbonds so as to link the dimeric units up and down. On the other hand, 3 adopts a regular cone conformation with C₄ symmetry to form cyclic hydrogen bonds withinthe rim part of TC4A.     

A simplified optical method for measuring residual stress by rapid cooling in thermosetting resin strip

This paper presents a simplified optical method for measuring the residual stresses by rapid cooling in thermosetting resin strips. First, the fundamental equations for calculating the residual stress from the residual birefringence were obtained by the linear photoviscoelastic theory. The specimens were then subjected to rapid cooling. After rapid cooling, the residual stress was measured by two methods, the simplified optical method mentioned above and the well-known layer-removal method. The effectiveness of the simplified optical method was discussed by comparing results of the two methods.     

Dynamic properties of combustion instability in a lean premixed gas-turbine combustor

We experimentally investigate the dynamic behavior of the combustion instability in a lean premixed gas-turbine combustor from the viewpoint of nonlinear dynamics. A nonlinear time series analysis in combination with a surrogate data method clearly reveals that as the equivalence ratio increases, the dynamic behavior of the combustion instability undergoes a significant transition from stochastic fluctuation to periodic oscillation through low-dimensional chaotic oscillation. We also show that a nonlinear forecasting method is useful for predicting the short-term dynamic behavior of the combustion instability in a lean premixed gas-turbine combustor, which has not been addressed in the fields of combustion science and physics.     

Electronic structures of the highest occupied molecular orbital bands of a pentacene ultrathin film

We report the energy dispersions of the highest occupied molecular orbitals (HOMO)-derived bands of a pentacene (Pn) thin film, whose in-plane structure resembles closely that of the ab plane of a low-density bulk Pn phase. Our present photoemission result indicates that the overlap of the pi-orbitals of adjacent Pn molecules is larger than what was expected from theoretical calculations. Further, of the two HOMO-derived bands, the large dispersion width of the band with higher binding energy suggests that this one mainly contributes to the bandlike charge transport in a Pn crystal.
