Nuclear-related analytical techniques: Literature retrieval from the INIS database

The applicability of the INIS database for literature retrieval on nuclear-related analytical techniques [e.g. neutron activation analysis (NAA), X-ray fluorescence (XRF), particle-induced X-ray emission (PIXE)] has been studied. There exist about 9700 documents on NAA and other forms of activation analysis, about 3500 documents on XRF and about 1200 documents on PIXE in the database collected from 1976 until July 1988. They cover a variety of elements and matrices in the fields of biology, geochemistry and the physical sciences. Some technical notes and comments on the practical use of this database are also included.     

Isostructural self-assembled monolayers. 2. Methyl 1-(3-mercaptopropyl)-oligo(ethylene oxide)s

The structural order and ordering conditions of the self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of HSCH2CH2CH2O(EO)xCH3, where EO = CH2CH2O and x = 3-9, on polycrystalline gold (Au) were determined by reflection-absorption infrared spectroscopy (RAIRS), spectroscopic ellipsometry (SE), and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. For x = 5-7, RAIRS and SE data show that the oligo(ethylene oxide) [OEO] segments adopt the near single phase, 7/2 helical conformation of the folded-chain crystal polymorph of crystalline poly(ethylene oxide), oriented normal to the substrate. These SAMs exhibit OEO segment structure and orientation identical to that found in a previous isostructural series [HS(CH2CH2O)6-8C18H37 SAMs. Vanderah, D. J., et al. Langmuir 2003, 19, 3752] and are anisotropic films for surface science metrology where structure is constant and thickness increases in 0.30 nm increments. In addition, this is the first example of OEO SAMs to attain this highly ordered, helical conformation where the (EO)x segment is separated from the Au-sulfur headgroup by a polymethylene chain. For x = 4, 8, and 9, the SAMs are largely helical but show evidence of nonhelical conformations and establish the upper and lower limits of the isostructural set. For x = 3, the SAMs are largely disordered containing some all-trans conformation. SAM order as a function of immersion time from 100% water and 95% ethanol indicates that the HSCH2CH2CH2O(EO)5-7CH3 SAMs order faster and under a wider range of conditions than omega-alkyl 1-thiaolio(ethylene oxide) [HS(EO)xCH3] SAMs, reported earlier (Vanderah, D. J., et al. Langmuir 2002, 18, 4674 and Vanderah, D. J., et al. Langmuir 2003, 19, 2612).     

Concerning atomic radii

The identification of the atomic radius with the distance from the nucleus to the position of the minimum in the internuclear electronic density is studied. It is shown that a set of statistically significant radii may be defined for the atoms of a given column of the periodic table bound to any of the atoms of another column. Sets of radii calculated by modified Anderson-Parr relations are presented. The values obtained are consistent with radii obtained using a minimum in electronic density criterion with electron densities calculated from molecular orbital wave functions or approximated by a sum of atomic densities.     

Gradient expansion of the kinetic energy density functional: Local behavior of the kinetic energy density

Calculations with Hartree—Fock electron densities for the rare gas atoms He through Xe show that the gradient expansion for the kinetic energy functional, T[] = T₀[] + T₂[] + T₄[] + … = ∫t() dτ, approximates the kinetic energy by averaging over the shell structure present in the true local kinetic energy density, t(), and that the accuracy of the gradient expansion improves with increasing atomic number. Components of t(), t₀(), t₂() and t₄(), are exhibited and discussed. The defined function t() is everywhere positive.     

Platinum(IV)-mediated nitrile-sulfimide coupling: a route to heterodiazadienes

Pt(IV)-mediated addition of the sulfimide Ph2S = NH and the mixed sulfide/sulfimides o- and p-[PhS(=NH)](PhS)-C6H4 by the S=NH group to the metal-bound nitriles in the platinum(IV) complexes [PtCl4(RCN)2] proceeds smoothly at room temperature in CH2Cl2 and results in the formation of the heterodiazadiene compounds [PtCl4[NH=C(R)N=SR'Ph]2] (R' = Ph, R = Me, Et, CH2Ph, Ph; R' = o- and p-(PhS)C6H4; R = Et). While trans-[PtCl4(RCN)2] (R = Et, CH2Ph, Ph) reacting with Ph2S=NH leads exclusively to trans-[PtCl4[NH=C(R)N=SPh2]2], cis/trans-[PtCl4(MeCN)2] leads to cis/trans mixtures of [PtCl4[NH=C(Me)N=SPh2]2] and the latter have been separated by column chromatography. Theoretical calculations at both HF/HF and MP2//HF levels for the cis and trans isomers of [PtCl4[NH=C(Me)N=SMe2]2] indicate a higher stability for the latter. Compounds trans-[PtCl4[E-NH=C(R)N=SPh2]2] (R = Me, Et) and cis-[PtCl4[E-NH=C(Me)N=SPh2][Z-NH=C(Me)N=SPh2]] have been characterized by X-ray crystallography. The complexes [PtCl4[NH=C(R)N=SPh2]2] undergo hydrolysis when treated with HCl in nondried CH2Cl2 to achieve the amidines [PtCl4[NH=C(NH2)R]2] the compound with R = Et has been structurally characterized) and Ph2SO. The heterodiazadiene ligands, formed upon Pt(IV)-mediated RCN/sulfimide coupling, can be liberated from their platinum(IV) complexes [PtCl4[NH=C(R)N=SR'Ph]2] by reaction with Ph2PCH2CH2PPh2 (dppe) giving free NH=C(R)=SR'Ph and the dppe oxides, which constitutes a novel route for such rare types of heterodiazadienes whose number has also been extended. The hybrid sulfide/sulfimide species o- and p-[PhS(=NH)](PhS)C6H4 also react with the Pt(II) nitrile complex [PtCl2(MeCN)2] but the coupling--in contrast to the Pt(IV) species--gives the chelates [PtCl2[M-I=C(Me)N=S(Ph)C6H4SPh]]. The X-ray crystal structure of [PtCl2[M-I=C(Me)N=S(Ph)C6H4SPh-o]] reveals the bond parameters within the metallacycle and shows an unusual close interaction of the sulfide sulfur atom with the platinum.     

Comment on a possible correlation between Tc and the number of stable isotopes of superconducting elements

Recently a correlation between T_c and the number of naturally occuring isotopes N of the superconducting elements has been claimed. We propose that this merely reflects the connection between T_c and the valence: odd valence means odd Z and few stable isotopes.     

Reporter resins for solid-phase chemistry

[reaction: see text] An analytical construct resin, designed to aid the analysis of solid-phase chemistry, has been mixed in a small proportion with a conventional resin. The analytical construct ("reporter resin") contains two orthogonal linkers that allow cleavage of either the synthetic intermediates (at linker 2) or their analytically enhanced derivatives (at linker 1). The convenient and rapid monitoring of each step in the syntheses of representative library compounds was possible using small resin aliquots.
