Long Abelian ideals

We study Abelian ideals of a Borel subalgebra consisting of long roots. It is shown that methods of Cellini and Papi can be extended to this situation. A uniform expression for the number of long Abelian ideals is given. We also show that there is a one-to-one correspondence between the long Abelian ideals and B-stable commutative subalgebras in the little adjoint representation of the Langlands dual Lie algebra.     

Liquid-phase noncatalytic butene oxidation with nitrous oxide

The kinetics and mechanism of noncatalytic liquid-phase oxidation of but-1-ene and but-2-ene with nitrous oxide in a benzene solution in the temperature range from 180 to 240°C were studied. Oxidation proceeds via the 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition mechanism to form carbonyl compounds. Both of these reactions occur with close rates and activation energies and have the first orders with respect to the alkene and N₂O. A considerable fraction (39%) of but-1-ene involved in oxidation undergoes cleavage at the double bond yielding propanal and an equivalent amount of methylene, the latter producing ethylcyclopropane and cycloheptatriene. The oxidation of but-2-ene proceeds with a minimum bond cleavage and affords methyl ethyl ketone with 84% selectivity. Regularities of the oxidation of terminal and internal alkenes C₂—C₈ with nitrous oxide were analyzed using the previously published data. __________ Published in Russian in Izvestiya Akademii Nauk. Synthesis and characterization of a polyfluorene containing carbazole and oxadiazole dipolar pendent groups and its application to electroluminescent devices

We have synthesized a blue‐light‐emitting polyfluorene (PF) derivative ( PF‐CBZ‐OXD ) that presents bulky hole‐transporting carbazole and electron‐transporting oxadiazole pendent groups functionalized at the C‐9 positions of alternating fluorene units. The results from photoluminescence and electrochemical measurements indicate that both the side chains and the PF main chain retain their own electronic characteristics in the copolymer. An electroluminescent device incorporating this polymer as the emitting layer was turned on at 4.5 V; it exhibited a stable blue emission with a maximum external quantum efficiency of 1.1%. Moreover, we doped PF‐CBZ‐OXD and its analogue PF‐TPA‐OXD with a red‐light‐emitting iridium phosphor for use as components of phosphorescent red‐light emitters to investigate the effect of the host's HOMO energy level on the degree of charge trapping and on the electrophosphorescent efficiency. We found that spectral overlap and individual energy level matching between the host and guest were both crucial features affecting the performance of the electroluminescence devices. Atomic force microscopy measurements indicated that the dipolar nature of PF‐CBZ‐OXD , in contrast to the general nonpolarity of polydialkylfluorenes, provided a stabilizing environment that allowed homogeneous dispersion of the polar iridium triplet dopant. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Effect of nickel coating on electrochemical performance of graphite anodes for lithium ion batteries

Among the different materials often studied and proposed as negative electrodes for lithium-ion batteries, graphite anodes are the most used in commercial batteries. For this study, synthetic graphite was tested. During the first discharge 0.2 Li ions were consumed for the formation of the SEI film and the capacity reaches about 387 mAh/g. But at the end of the first charge only 72% of the initial charge was recovered (the reversible capacity is about 279 mAh/g). In order to improve this performance we have deposited metallic nickel on graphite with the intention to obtain a homogeneous thin layer able to modify the nature of the SEI film, to allow the diffusion of lithium ions through the protective layer, and also to increase the performance of graphite electrodes. The results show a decrease of the irreversible capacity loss (16% instead of 28% for pure graphite electrodes) as well as better cycleability for a nickel-deposited graphite electrode with only 11% weight ratio of nickel. On the other hand, an increase of the nickel content decreases this performance.     

Ordered states and structural transitions in a system of Abrikosov vortices with periodic pinning

A system of Abrikosov vortices in a quasi-two-dimensional HTSC plate is considered for various periodic lattices of pinning centers. The magnetization and equilibrium configurations of the vortex density for various values of external magnetic field and temperature are calculated using the Monte Carlo method. It is found that the interaction of the vortex system with the periodic lattice of pinning centers leads to the formation of various ordered vortex states through which the vortex system passes upon an increase or a decrease in the magnetic field. It is shown that ordered vortex states, as well as magnetic field screening processes, are responsible for the emergence of clearly manifested peaks on the magnetization curves. Extended pinning centers and the effect of multiple trapping of vortices on the behavior of magnetization are considered. Melting and crystallization of the vortex system under the periodic pinning conditions are investigated. It is found that the vortex system can crystallize upon heating in the case of periodic pinning.     

Finitely generated simple algebras: A question of B. I. Plotkin

In his recent series of lectures, Prof. B. I. Plotkin discussed geometrical properties of the variety of associativeK-algebras. In particular, he studied geometrically noetherian and logically noetherian algebras and, in this connection, he asked whether there exist uncountably many simpleK-algebras with a fixed finite number of generators. We answer this question in the affirmative using both crossed product constructions and HNN extensions of division rings. Specifically, we show that there exist uncountably many nonisomorphic 4-generator simple Ore domains, and also uncountably many nonisomorphic division algebras having 2 generators as a division algebra. Tautomeric Equilibrium in Polyfluoroalkylated 5,6,7,8-Tetrahydrofurans by IR Spectroscopy

The tautomeric equilibrium in substituted 5,6,7,8-tetrahydroquinazolines was studied by IR spectroscopy. The effect of various substitutents in the pyrimidine ring and the solvent on the state of the tautomeric equilibrium was evaluated.     

On Brennan's Conjecture for a Special Class of Functions

In this paper, we prove Brennan's conjecture for conformal mappings f of the disk {z : | z| < 1} assuming that the Taylor coefficients of the function log(zf′(z)/f(z)) at zero are nonnegative. We also obtain inequalities for the integral means over the circle |z| = r of the squared modulus of the function zf′(z)/f(z).
