The porous coordination framework material, Fe(NCS)2(bped)2 x 3EtOH, SCOF-3(Et) (where bped is dl-1,2-bis(4'-pyridyl)-1,2-ethanediol), displays a spin-crossover (SCO) transition that has been stimulated both thermally and by light irradiation. The one-step thermal SCO (70-180 K) is sensitive to the presence of molecular guests, with a more gradual transition (70-225 K) apparent following the desorption of ethanol molecules that hydrogen bond to the spin centers. Additional intraframework hydrogen-bonding interactions stabilize the vacant one-dimensional pore structure of the apohost, SCOF-3, despite a dramatic single-crystal to single-crystal (SC-SC) structural change upon removal of the guests. Comprehensive structural analyses throughout this transformation, from primitive orthorhombic (Pccn) to body-centered tetragonal (I4/mcm), reveal a flexing of the framework and a dilation of the channels, with an accompanying subtle distortion of the iron(II) coordination geometry. Photomagnetic measurements of the light-induced excited spin state trapping (LIESST) effect have been used to assess the degree of cooperativity in this system.  相似文献

Peptidoglycan is an essential component of bacterial cell wall. The glycan strands of peptidoglycan are synthesized by enzymes called peptidoglycan glycosyltransferases (PGTs). Using a high-resolution SDS-PAGE assay, we compared the glycan strand lengths of four different PGTs from three different organisms (Escherichia coli, Enterococcus faecalis, and Staphylococcus aureus). We report that each enzyme makes a polymer having an intrinsic characteristic length that is independent of the enzyme:substrate ratio. The glycan strand lengths vary considerably, depending on the enzyme. These results indicate that each enzyme must have some mechanism, as yet unknown, for controlling product length. The observation that different PGTs produce different length glycan chains may have implications for their cellular roles and for the three-dimensional structure of bacterial peptidoglycan.  相似文献

On the basis of a Gaussian quasichemical model of hydration, a model of non-van der Waals character, we explore the role of attractive methane-water interactions in the hydration of methane and in the potential of mean force between two methane molecules in water. We find that the hydration of methane is dominated by packing and a mean-field energetic contribution. Contributions beyond the mean-field term are unimportant in the hydration phenomena for a hydrophobic solute such as methane. Attractive solute-water interactions make a net repulsive contribution to these pair potentials of mean force. With no conditioning, the observed distributions of binding energies are super-Gaussian and can be effectively modeled by a Gumbel (extreme value) distribution. This further supports the view that the characteristic form of the unconditioned distribution in the high-epsilon tail is due to energetic interactions with a small number of molecules. Generalized extreme value distributions also effectively model the results with minimal conditioning, but in those cases the distributions are sufficiently narrow that the details of their shape are not significant.  相似文献

Various chiral N-palmitoyl amino acid surfactants (AAS) derived from methionine, proline, leucine, threonine, phenylalanine and phenylglycine were prepared and converted to their sodium salt. The properties of the aggregates formed in aqueous solution were studied for both the optically-active compounds and their racemic mixture. Characterization was made by surface tensiometry, fluorimetry, dynamic light scattering, circular dichroism (CD) and transmission electron microscopy. It appeared that most of the AAS studied in this work spontaneously formed different types of aggregates, including micrometer-sized aggregates. No significant difference could be found between the critical aggregation concentration (cac) value of pure enantiomers and that of the racemic forms. CD spectra did not reveal any aggregation-induced chirality.  相似文献

One goal of an undergraduate education in mathematics is to help students develop a productive disposition towards mathematics. A way of conceiving of this is as helping mathematical novices transition to more expert-like perceptions of mathematics. This conceptualization creates a need for a way to characterize students' perceptions of mathematics in authentic educational settings. This article presents a survey, the Mathematics Attitudes and Perceptions Survey (MAPS), designed to address this need. We present the development of the MAPS instrument and its validation on a large (N = 3411) set of student data. Results from various MAPS implementations corroborate results from analogous instruments in other STEM disciplines. We present these results and highlight some in particular: MAPS scores correlate with course grades; students tend to move away from expert-like orientations over a semester or year of taking a mathematics course; and interactive-engagement type lectures have less of a negative impact, but no positive impact, on students' overall orientations than traditional lecturing. We include the MAPS instrument in this article and suggest ways in which it may deepen our understanding of undergraduate mathematics education.  相似文献

Polyelectrolyte brushes were built on mica by anchoring polystyrene-poly(acrylic acid) (PS-b-PAA) diblock copolymers at a controlled surface density in a polystyrene monolayer covalently attached to OH-activated mica surfaces. Compared to physisorbed polymer brushes, these irreversibly attached charged brushes allow the polymer grafting density to remain constant upon changes in environmental conditions (e.g., pH, salt concentration, compression, and shear). The normal interaction and friction forces as a function of surface separation distance and at different concentrations of added salt (NaCl) were investigated using a surface forces apparatus. The interaction force profiles were completely reversible both on loading and receding and were purely repulsive. For a constant polymer grafting density, the influence of the polyelectrolyte charges and the Debye screening effect on the overall interaction forces was investigated. The experimental interaction force profiles agree very well with scaling models developed for neutral and charged polymer brushes. The variation of the friction force between two PAA brushes in motion with respect to each other as a function of surface separation distance appeared to be similar to that observed with neutral brushes. This similarity suggests that the increase in friction is associated with an increase in mutual interpenetration upon compression as observed with neutral polymers. The effect of the PAA charges and added ions was more significant on the repulsive normal forces than on the friction forces. The reversible characteristics of the normal force profiles and friction measurements confirmed the strong attachment of the PAA brushes to the mica substrate. High friction coefficients (ca 0.3) were measured at relatively high pressures (40 atm) with no surface damage or polymer removal.  相似文献

Normal and shear forces were measured as a function of surface separation, D, between hydrophobized mica surfaces bearing layers of a hydrophobic-polyelectrolytic diblock copolymer, poly(methyl methacrylate)- block-poly(sodium sulfonated glycidyl methacrylate) copolymer (PMMA- b-PSGMA). The copolymers were attached to each hydrophobized surface by their hydrophobic PMMA moieties with the nonadsorbing polyelectrolytic PSGMA tails extending into the aqueous medium to form a polyelectrolyte brush. Following overnight incubation in 10 (-4) w/v aqueous solution of the copolymer, the strong hydrophobic attraction between the hydrophobized mica surfaces across water was replaced by strongly repulsive normal forces between them. These were attributed to the osmotic repulsion arising from the confined counterions at long-range, together with steric repulsion between the compressed brush layers at shorter range. The corresponding shear forces on sliding the surfaces were extremely low and below our detection limit (+/-20-30 nN), even when compressed down to a volume fraction close to unity. On further compression, very weak shear forces (130 +/- 30 nN) were measured due to the increase in the effective viscous drag experienced by the compressed, sliding layers. At separations corresponding to pressures of a few atmospheres, the shearing motion led to abrupt removal of most of the chains out of the gap, and the surfaces jumped into adhesive contact. The extremely low frictional forces between the charged brushes (prior to their removal) is attributed to the exceptional resistance to mutual interpenetration displayed by the compressed, counterion-swollen brushes, together with the fluidity of the hydration layers surrounding the charged, rubbing polymer segments.  相似文献

Addition of organic azides, N(3)R (R = 2,4,6-trimethylphenyl (Mes), phenyl (Ph), 1-adamantyl (Ad)), to a solution of the uranium(III) alkyl complex, Tp*(2)U(CH(2)Ph) (Tp* = hydrotris(3,5-dimethylpyrazolyl)borate) (1), results in the formation of a family of uranium(iv) imido derivatives, Tp*(2)U(NR) (2-R). Notably, these complexes were synthesized in high yields by coupling of the benzyl groups to form bibenzyl. The uranium(IV) imido derivatives, 2-Mes, 2-Ph, and 2-Ad, were all characterized by both (1)H NMR and IR spectroscopy, and 2-Mes and 2-Ad were also characterized by X-ray crystallography. In the molecular structure of 2-Mes, typical κ(3)-coordination of the Tp* ligands was observed; however in the case of 2-Ad, one pyrazole ring of a Tp* ligand has rotated away from the metal centre, forcing a κ(2)-coordination of the pyrazoles. This results in a uranium-hydrogen interaction with the Tp* B-H. Treating these imido complexes with para-tolualdehyde results in multiple bond metathesis, forming the terminal uranium(IV) oxo complex, Tp*(2)U(O), and the corresponding imine.  相似文献

The refractive index is an important property affecting aerosol optical properties, which in turn help determine the aerosol direct effect and satellite retrieval results. Here, we investigate the real refractive indices (m(r)) of secondary organic aerosols (SOA) generated from the photooxidation of limonene and α-pinene with different HC/NO(x) ratios. Refractive indices were obtained from polar nephelometer data using parallel and perpendicular polarized 532 nm light combined with measured size distributions, and retrievals were performed using a genetic algorithm and Mie-Lorenz scattering theory. The absolute error associated with the m(r) retrieval is ±0.03, and reliable retrievals are possible for mass concentrations above 5-20 μg/m(3) depending on particle size. The limonene SOA data suggest the most important factor controlling the refractive index is the HC/NO(x) ratio; the refractive index is much less sensitive to the aerosol age or mass concentration. The refractive index ranges from about 1.34 to 1.56 for limonene and from 1.36 to 1.52 for α-pinene, and generally decreases as the HC/NO(x) ratio increases. Especially for limonene, the particle diameter is also inversely related to the HC/NO(x) ratio; the final size mode increases from 220 to 330 nm as the HC/NO(x) ratio decreases from 33 to 6. In an effort to explore the ability of models from the literature to explain the observed refractive indices, a recent limonene oxidation mechanism was combined with SOA partitioning and a structure-property relationship for estimating refractive indices of condensing species. The resulting refractive indices fell in a much narrower range (1.475 ± 0.02) of m(r) than observed experimentally. We hypothesize the experimentally observed high m(r) values are due to oligomerization and the low values to water uptake, small soluble molecules such as glyoxal and other factors, each of which is not included in the oxidation mechanism. Aerosol formation yields were measured over the mass concentration range from 6 to ~150 μg/m(3), over which they increased steadily, and were higher for high HC/NO(x) ratio experiments.  相似文献

Spatially offset Raman spectroscopy (SORS) using 1064 nm excitation is demonstrated here to detect chemicals through a physical barrier such as a container. This excitation wavelength overcomes the issue of fluorescence from the target chemical, whilst retaining the benefits of the SORS technique for through-barrier detection.
