The epidermis is the outermost layer of skin. It is comprised of keratin-containing cells called keratinocytes. Functionally, the epidermis serves as a physical barrier that can prevent infection and regulate body hydration. Maintenance and repair of the epidermis are important for human health. Mechanistically, these processes occur primarily via proliferation and differentiation of stem cells located in the basal monolayer. These processes are believed to depend on cell-cell communication and spatial constraints but existing kinetic models focus mainly on proliferation and differentiation. To address this issue, we present a mean-field kinetic model that takes these additional factors into account and describes the epidermis at a biosystem level. The corresponding equations operate with the populations of stem cells and differentiated cells in the basal layer. The keratinocytes located above the basal layer are treated at a more coarse-grained level by considering the thickness of the epidermis. The model clarifies the likely role of various negative feedbacks that may control the epidermis and, accordingly, provides insight into the cellular mechanisms underlying complex biological phenomena such as wound healing. 相似文献

We present a facile method for the self-directed growth of 1D molecular lines on the H-terminated Si(001) surface. Instead of a previously employed single dangling bond, we here employ a single H-free Si dimer as a reaction site, resulting in an enhanced stability of the radical intermediate for the O-phthalaldehyde (OP) molecule containing two carbonyl groups. This radical intermediate easily abstracts two H atoms from a neighboring Si dimer, thereby allowing the chain reaction for a 1D molecular line. Pheophorbide a (PhA) was identified as a photosensitizer to exert cytotoxicity on tumor cells. However, the efficacy of this
compound on the treatment of prostate cancer remains unknown. The aim of this study was to evaluate the photodynamic effect
of PhA on prostate cancer cells. Cellular uptake of PhA and cell viability after photo-activation was studied in LNCaP prostate
cancer cells. The corresponding production of reactive oxygen species within cells was determined after photodynamic therapy
(PDT). Our results showed that the uptake of PhA into LNCaP cells was in a time-dependent manner and the cytotoxicity of PhA-PDT
was photosensitizer dose- and light dose-dependent. The intracellular reactive oxygen species was remarkably induced after
PDT treatment, which was responsible for the inhibition effect on prostate cancer cells. This is the first report to evaluate
the photodynamic effect of PhA on prostate cancer. Our findings demonstrate that PhA-PDT may be a potentially promising treatment

We report a first measurement of inclusive B→Xsη decays, where Xs is a charmless state with unit strangeness. The measurement is based on a pseudoinclusive reconstruction technique and uses a sample of 657×10(6)BB pairs accumulated with the Belle detector at the KEKB e+e- collider. For MXs < 2.6 GeV/c2, we measure a branching fraction of [26.1±3.0(stat)-2.1+1.9(syst)-7.1+4.0(model)]×10(-5) and a direct CP asymmetry of ACP=-0.13±0.04-0.03+0.02. In situ monitoring of nucleation and evolution of Ge nanodots on faintly oxidized Si(1 1 1) surfaces
We have investigated the nucleation and evolution of germanium (Ge) nanodot (ND)s taking place while depositing Ge onto the silicon (Si) (1 1 1) surfaces with ultra-thin Si oxide films by using ultra-high vacuum in situ high-resolution transmission electron microscopy in the profile-imaging geometry. Various types of growth phenomena such as nucleation, growth and coalescence of Ge NDs have successfully been observed. The results show that the growth phenomena of the Ge NDs are dramatically rapid after their size reaches the size of the critical nucleus. The critical nucleus size estimated from a model using the cohesive energy of the Ge NDs has been consistent with observed one. 相似文献

Objectives
The present study was performed to examine which factors among self-rated scales, perceptual evaluations, and acoustic parameters, calculated from sustained vowels, are reliable indicators of physical and mental fatigues.Methods
A total of 73 volunteers (male:female, 52:21), aged 19–24 years, were enrolled in this study. We defined the high- and low-fatigue groups using the Chalder Fatigue Scale score. For assessment of self-rated symptoms, each subject was asked to complete Voice Handicap Index (VHI) and Voice Rating Scale (VRS). For perceptual evaluations, three clinicians assessed each subject’s vocal quality on the Grade, Roughness, Breathiness, Asthenia, Strain Scale. For acoustic analysis, each subject was asked to produce sustained vowels /a/, /e/, /i/, /o/, and /u/ for 3 seconds. Then, the habitual fundamental frequency (F0), jitter, shimmer, F0 tremor, mean F0, standard deviation of F0, maximum F0, minimum F0, normalized noise energy, harmonic-to-noise ratio (HNR), signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), amplitude tremor, and ratio within 2–4 kHz were calculated using Dr. Speech software.Results
In men, VHI, VRS, F0 tremor, shimmer, HNR, SNR, and amplitude tremor were related to mental fatigue. In women, only VHI was related to physical fatigue, and none of the acoustic parameters was related to the fatigue score. Perceptual evaluations were not related to fatigue in men or women.Conclusions
These findings suggest that self-rated symptoms and acoustic parameters related to voice quality are indicative of mental fatigue, and these features are prominent in men. 相似文献50.

We report on the fabrication and characteristics of sandwich-type tunnel junctions with highly crystalline sputtered a-axis oriented thin film of Y1Ba2Cu3O7-x (YBC) as the base and the counter electrode. The junctions have been fabricated on SrTiO3 (100) and MgO (100) substrates. A non-superconducting phase of YBC corresponding to a lattice constant of 4.08 Å is used as the barrier layer making this an all YBC sandwich junction. For all temperatures below Tce (R=0) of the device, a zero voltage current was observed. The critical current density (Jc) of the device was found to be dependent on the thickness of the barrier layer and the crystallinity of the a-axis oriented YBC electrodes. At 40 K, such a junction fabricated on a SrTiO3 (100) substrate was found to have a Jc of 1.8 X 104 A/cm2 and an IcRn product of 0.2 mV. 相似文献
