Efficient copper-catalyzed S-vinylation of thiols with vinyl halides

The synthesis of vinyl sulfides through the coupling reaction of thiols with vinyl iodides, bromides, and chlorides is described. The thiols can couple with aryl iodides in the presence of only 0.5 mol % Cu(2)O without the need for an ancillary ligand. In the presence of 5 mol % of Cu(2)O and 10 mol % 1,10-phenanthroline as the ligand, the more challenging alkyl vinyl bromides can also be coupled with thiols, giving the vinyl sulfides in good to excellent yields.     

Toward a four-toothed molecular bevel gear with C2-symmetrical rotors

The design, synthesis, conformational analysis, and variable-temperature NMR studies of pentiptycene-based molecular gears Pp(2)X, where Pp is the unlabeled (in 1H) or methoxy groups-labeled (in 1OM) pentiptycene rotor and X is the phenylene stator containing ortho-bridged ethynylene axles, are reported. The approach of using shape-persistent rotors of four teeth but C(2) symmetry for constructing four-toothed molecular gears is unprecedented. In addition, the first example of enantioresolution of chiral pentiptycene scaffolds is demonstrated. Density functional theory (DFT) and AM1 calculations on these Pp(2)X systems suggest two possible correlated torsional motions, geared rocking and four-toothed geared rotations, which compete with the uncorrelated gear slippage. The DFT-derived torsional barriers in 1H for rocking, four-toothed rotation, and gear slippage are approximately 2.9, 5.5, and 4.7 kcal mol(-1), respectively. The low energy barriers for these torsional motions result from the low energy cost of bending the ethynylene axles. Comparison of the NMR spectra of 1OM in a mixture of stereoisomers (1OM-mix) and in an enantiopure form (1OM-op) confirms a fast gear slippage in these Pp(2)X systems. The effect of the methoxy labels on rotational potential energy surface and inter-rotor dynamics is also discussed.     

Asymmetric cancer-cell filopodium growth induced by electric-fields in a microfluidic culture chip

We combine a micro-fluidic electric-field cell-culture (MEC) chip with structured-illumination nano-profilometry (SINAP) to quantitatively study the variations of cancer cell filopodia under external direct-current electric field (dcEF) stimulations. Because the lateral resolution of SINAP is better than 150 nm in bright-field image modality, filopodia with diameters smaller than 200 nm can be observed clearly without fluorescent labeling. In the MEC chip, a homogeneous EF is generated inside the culture area that simulates the endogenous EF environment. With this MEC chip-SINAP system, we directly observe and quantify the biased growth of filopodia of lung cancer cells toward the cathode. The epidermal growth factor receptors around the cell edges are also redistributed to the cathodal side. These results suggest that cancer-cell filopodia respond to the changes in EFs in the microenvironment.     

Cubic planar hamiltonian graphs of various types

Let U be the set of cubic planar hamiltonian graphs, A the set of graphs G in U such that G-v is hamiltonian for any vertex v of G, B the set of graphs G in U such that G-e is hamiltonian for any edge e of G, and C the set of graphs G in U such that there is a hamiltonian path between any two different vertices of G. With the inclusion and/or exclusion of the sets A,B, and C, U is divided into eight subsets. In this paper, we prove that there is an infinite number of graphs in each of the eight subsets.     

Influence diagnostic for censored regression models

This paper proposes a diagnostic measure to detect outliers either in the response variable or in the design space both for Schmee-Hahn estimator and Buckley-James estimator in censored regressions. The diagnostics consists of the leverage point and standardized predicted residual.
