The results are presented of Gibbs ensemble Monte Carlo (GEMC) simulations examining the nematic–isotropic (N–I) coexistence envelope of a liquid crystal mixture. The system studied is a 50:50 mixture of 1000 generalized Gay–Berne particles with axial ratios 2.0:1 and 2.5:1. For this system, stable N–I coexistence is observed over run lengths in excess of 5 x 105 GEMC sweeps. There is unambiguous evidence of fractionation, the mole fractions of long particles in the coexisting phases typically differing by 11%. The measured coexistence envelope does not conform to the lens shape predicted by Onsager theory; qualitative finite size arguments are given in explanation of this distortion. 相似文献

Inappropriate development and overexploitation have seriously degraded aquatic resources in China. Stakeholders identified three fish stock enhancement and biodiversity conservation scenarios for the Beijiang River: S1, increased fish restocking; S2, no fishing season and habitat conservation; and S3, strict pollution control. Potential impacts of these actions on the livelihoods of fishers were evaluated using applied economic modeling. Baseline costs and benefits came from logbooks from 30 fishers and a survey of 90 households in three villages. The financial net benefit for a household was US$1583 (¥11,160) annually, representing a 142% and 387% return on capital and operating costs, respectively. Larger catches associated with S1 and S2 generated a net benefit of US$1651 and US$1822, respectively. Strict pollution control resulting in higher catches (+20%) and lower operating costs (?20%) would increase the net benefit by 15.9% to US$1835 annually. Pollution control would benefit other resource users and is a prerequisite for ecological restoration. Recommendations for Resource Managers
- Stringent pollution control measures are essential to conserve aquatic biodiversity and enhance the livelihoods of fishers but will require considerable public and private sector investment.
- Enhanced fish stocks in the Beijiang River could benefit poor livelihoods but may not be sufficient to lift households out of poverty, aged fishers require government assistance to diversify their livelihoods, access alternative urban employment, and survive with dignity.
- Adopting the economic modeling approach presented here could enable responsible authorities to simultaneously evaluate fish stock enhancement and biodiversity conservation options.
- Broader application of the approach presented here could help ensure small‐scale inland fisheries are managed sustainably and aquatic ecosystems are restored and protected by 2020, in line with Target 6 of the United Nations’ Convention on Biological Diversity Strategic Plan for Biodiversity.

Omniphobic fluorogel elastomers were prepared by photocuring perfluorinated acrylates and a perfluoropolyether crosslinker. By tuning either the chemical composition or the temperature that control the crystallinity of the resulting polymer chains, a broad range of optical and mechanical properties of the fluorogel can be achieved. After infusing with fluorinated lubricants, the fluorogels showed excellent resistance to wetting by various liquids and anti‐biofouling behavior, while maintaining cytocompatiblity. 相似文献

Previous studies of different solvates of 2-methylpyridyllithium (2-picolyllithium) have uncovered electronic structures corresponding to aza-allyl and enamido resonance forms of the metallated pyridine-based compounds. Here, we report the synthesis and characterization of [2-CH2Li(THF)2C5H4N], a new THF solvate. X-ray crystallographic studies reveal a dimeric arrangement featuring a non-planar eight-membered [NCCLi]2 ring, in which the primary cation-anion interaction is between the central Li atom and the C atom of the deprotonated methyl group [length, 2.285(2) Å], suggesting a new carbanionic resonance structure for this 2-picolyllithium series. The significant carbanionic character of [2-CH2Li(THF)2C5H4N] was confirmed by gas-phase DFT calculations [B3LYP/6-311+G(d)] with the calculated electron density interrogated by means of quantum theory of atoms in molecules (QTAIM) and natural bond orbital (NBO) analyses. For comparison these computational analyses were also performed on the literature structures of [2-CH2Li(2-Picoline)C5H4N] and [2-CH2Li(PMDETA)C5H4N]. In a reactivity study, [2-CH2Li(THF)2C5H4N] was found to undergo nucleophilic addition to pyridine to generate dipyridylmethane in a good yield. 相似文献

A convenient and industrially scalable method for synthesis of homogeneous nanocomposite films comprising poly(styrene‐stat‐butyl acrylate) and nanodimensional graphene oxide (GO) or reduced GO (rGO) is presented. Importantly, the nanocomposite latex undergoes film formation at ambient temperature, thus alleviating any need for high temperature or high pressure methods such as compression molding. The method entails synthesis of an aqueous nanocomposite latex via miniemulsion copolymerization relying on nanodimensional GO sheets as sole surfactant, followed by ambient temperature film formation resulting in homogeneous film. For comparison, a similar latex obtained by physical mixing of a polymer latex with an aqueous GO dispersion results in severe phase separation, illustrating that the miniemulsion approach using GO as surfactant is key to obtaining homogeneous nanocomposite films. Under conditions of collision‐induced dissociation (CID), anions of α‐hydroxycarboxylic acids usually fragment to yield the distinctive hydroxycarbonyl anion (m/z 45) and/or the complementary product anion formed by neutral loss of formic acid (46 u). Further support for the known two‐step mechanism, involving an ion‐neutral complex for the formation of the hydroxycarbonyl anion from the carboxyl group, is herein provided by tandem mass spectrometric results and density functional theory computations on the glycolate, lactate and 3‐phenyllactate ions. A fourth, structurally related α‐hydroxycarboxylate ion, obtained by deprotonation of mandelic acid, showed only loss of carbon dioxide upon CID. Density functional theory computations on the mandelate ion indicated that similar energy inputs were required for a direct, phenyl‐assisted decarboxylation and a postulated novel rearrangement to a carbonate ester, which yielded the benzyl oxide ion upon loss of CO2. Rearrangement of the glycolate ion led to expulsion of carbon monoxide, whereas the 3‐phenyllactate ion showed the loss of water and formation of the benzyl anion and the benzyl radical as competing processes. The fragmentation pathways proposed for lactate and 3‐phenyllactate are supported by isotopic labeling. The relative computed energies of saddle points and product ions for all proposed fragmentation pathways are consistent with the energies supplied during CID experiments and the observed relative intensities of product ions. The diverse reaction pathways characterized for this set of four α‐hydroxycarboxylate ions demonstrate that it is crucial to understand the effects of structural variations when attempting to predict the gas‐phase reactivity and CID spectra of carboxylate ions.
