Recently, a new type of cancer treatment has been introduced that combines pulsed electric fields (PEF) with anticancer drugs. The proposed mode of action is that PEF create transient pores in the membranes which allow entry of drugs into the cells. This method increases cytotoxicity of some anticancer drugs like bleomycin (BLM) by 2-3 orders of magnitude, which, in turn, reduces systemic drug dosage without decreasing efficacy. In the present study, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was used to determine changes in apparent water self-diffusion coefficients (ADC) and spin-lattice (T(1)) and spin-spin (T(2)) relaxation times that occur in an animal laryngeal tumor (HEp-2 cells) model with BLM delivered by PEF. A Bruker 14 Tesla (600 MHz) wide-bore spectrometer with micro-imaging capability was used to generate all the data. Mice carrying approximately 8 mm tumors were treated with several combinations of drug and PEF. All measurements were made on tumor samples excised from mice 24 and 48 hours after treatment with (i) saline, intratumor injection (i.t.), (ii) BLM, i.t., (iii) saline with PEF, and (iv) BLM, i.t., followed by PEF. Although T(1) does not differ between the controls (i, ii, and iii) and full treatment (iv) 6.72 +/- 0.20 s vs. 6.31 +/- 1.7 s, T(2) for (iv) at 24 hours is significantly different from the controls 52.4 +/- 0.91 ms vs. 46.5 +/- 1.54 ms. T(2) differences between treatment and controls disappear at 48 hours. ADC increases significantly from 24 to 48 hours (7.31 +/- 0.16 x 10(-6) to 8.28 +/- 0.28 x 10(-6) cm(2)/sec, p = 0.05). Longer T(2) values may reflect early apoptosis and tumor death when the tumor is structurally less dense. Higher ADC's, associated with the periphery of the tumors and the central region, may indicate loose structural organization and necrosis resulting from the combination treatment.  相似文献

Low-noise operation of a 9-GHz hybridly mode-locked laser diode is demonstrated. The integrated timing jitter was 47 fs (10 Hz to 10 MHz) and 86 fs (10 Hz to 4.5 GHz), with a pulse width of 6.7 ps. Gaussian beams provide a useful insonifying field for surface or interface scattering problems such as encountered in electromagnetics, acoustics and seismology. Gaussian beams have these advantages: (i) They give a finite size for the scattering region on the interface. (ii) The incident energy is restricted to a small range of grazing angles. (iii) They do not have side lobes. (iv) They have a convenient mathematical expression. The major disadvantages are: (i) Insonification of an interface is nonuniform. The scattered field will depend on the location of the scatterers within the beam. (ii) The beams spread, so that propagation becomes an integral component of the scattering problem. A standard beam parameterization is proposed which keeps propagation effects uniform among various models so that the effects of scattering only can be compared. In continuous wave problems, for a given angle of incidence and incident amplitude threshold, there will be an optimum Gaussian beam which keeps the insonified area as small as possible. For numerical solutions of pulse beams, these standard parameters provide an estimate of the smallest truncated domain necessary for a physically meaningful result.  相似文献

We present evidence for the generation of free carriers in aggregated single-wall carbon nanotubes by photoexcitation in the energetic range of the π→π(*) transition associated with the M saddle point of the graphene lattice. The underlying broad absorption culminating at 4.3 eV can be fit well with a Fano line shape that describes strong coupling of a saddle-point exciton to an underlying free electron-hole pair continuum. Moreover, it is demonstrated that transitions in this energetic region autoionize into the continuum by detecting features unique to the presence of free charges in the transient transmission spectra of the continuum-embedded second sub-band exciton, S(2).  相似文献

A novel approach to locate, identify and refine positions and whole areas of cell structures based on elemental contents measured by X‐ray fluorescence microscopy is introduced. It is shown that, by initializing with only a handful of prototypical cell regions, this approach can obtain consistent identification of whole cells, even when cells are overlapping, without training by explicit annotation. It is robust both to different measurements on the same sample and to different initializations. This effort provides a versatile framework to identify targeted cellular structures from datasets too complex for manual analysis, like most X‐ray fluorescence microscopy data. Possible future extensions are also discussed.  相似文献

The surface structure of a single-crystal ZnO wafer was studied by angle-resolved x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (ARXPS) using synchrotron radiation. As a result, well-defined x-ray photoelectron diffraction (XPD) patterns were obtained for the (0001) and (0001¯) polar surfaces using the photoemission from the Zn 2p3/2 and O 1s core levels. The XPD patterns were indexed assuming forward scattering of photoelectrons by neighboring ions. Further, the XPD patterns for the (0001) and (0001¯) surfaces were different from each other, indicating the possibility for using the XPD technique for polarity determination.  相似文献

Imaging of micro- and nanofluidics is a challenge since the size of the channels is so small that the installment of additional optical and mechanical switches is very difficult. The size of the device and associated increase in viscous dissipation constitute another constraint. In response to these limitations, this work proposes and demonstrates the manipulation of light by adding a functional lens to control the light on demand. In the present work, this lens is realized by filling a hollow fiber with a colloid of superparamagnetic Fe3O4 nanoparticles. When the propagation of light is perpendicular to the magnetic field, this lens stretches the circular beam into a ribbon yielding a larger visible area. Potentially, one can apply a rotating magnetic field thus illuminating a larger spot size or creating other beam geometries. Such composite fibers might also be of value for Faraday isolation and other magneto-optic effects in optical fibers.  相似文献

The ability to direct sound energy through the flexural vibrations of a submerged plate at various angles of incidence using a near-field transducer array is investigated. An alumina bar is placed in front of a one-dimensional, eight-element transducer array, between the array and the water. Operating in a receive mode, data were taken as a function of angle of incidence and compared to data taken without the presence of the alumina bar. The array was also operated in transmit mode and results were compared to corresponding receive mode data, showing that reciprocity holds. Results show that in fact sound energy can be steered through a plate, and that the measurement method used provides a convenient method of measuring the angular dependence of transmission through a plate, including measurements at frequencies above the plate's critical frequency. Experimental results of sound transmission versus angle of incidence of finite sized plates agree qualitatively with theoretical results from an analysis of the transmission through an unbounded flexible partition.  相似文献

In order to improve the lateral resolution and extend the field of view of a previously reported 48 element 30 MHz ultrasound linear array and 16-channel digital imaging system, the development of a 256 element 30 MHz linear array and an ultrasound imaging system with increased channel count has been undertaken. This paper reports the design and testing of a 64 channel digital imaging system which consists of an analog front-end pulser/receiver, 64 channels of Time-Gain Compensation (TGC), 64 channels of high-speed digitizer as well as a beamformer. A Personal Computer (PC) is used as the user interface to display real-time images. This system is designed as a platform for the purpose of testing the performance of high frequency linear arrays that have been developed in house. Therefore conventional approaches were taken it its implementation. Flexibility and ease of use are of primary concern whereas consideration of cost-effectiveness and novelty in design are only secondary. Even so, there are many issues at higher frequencies but do not exist at lower frequencies need to be solved. The system provides 64 channels of excitation pulsers while receiving simultaneously at a 20–120 MHz sampling rate to 12-bits. The digitized data from all channels are first fed through Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs), and then stored in memories. These raw data are accessed by the beamforming processor to re-build the image or to be downloaded to the PC for further processing. The beamformer that applies delays to the echoes of each channel is implemented with the strategy that combines coarse (8.3 ns) and fine delays (2 ns). The coarse delays are integer multiples of the sampling clock rate and are achieved by controlling the write enable pin of the First-In-First-Out (FIFO) memory to obtain valid beamforming data. The fine delays are accomplished with interpolation filters. This system is capable of achieving a maximum frame rate of 50 frames per second. Wire phantom images acquired with this system show a spatial resolution of 146 μm (lateral) and 54 μm (axial). Images with excised rabbit and pig eyeball as well as mouse embryo were also acquired to demonstrate its imaging capability.  相似文献

The nature of argon-ion bombarded nickel surfaces (polycrystalline, and (111), (110) and (100) single crystals) and their subsequent interaction with oxygen at ordinary temperatures have been studied using X-ray and UV photoelectron spectroscopy, including angular variation measurements and the determination of work function changes, in combination in the same apparatus. Variations between the HeI spectra of the four clean substrates were taken to confirm the presence of substantial order within the depth sampled by UPS. The four surfaces exhibited similar but not identical behaviour during oxidation, resembling that reported by other workers from studies of both annealed single crystals and evaporated polycrystalline films. The initial process was deduced to be essentially dissociative chemisorption: no evidence supporting a previous suggestion of associative adsorption at low coverages was found. Oxygen commenced to penetrate below the surface of all samples before oxygen equivalent to a monolayer had been taken up (~10 L exposure) and further substantial uptake followed resulting in the formation of a stable film (~18 Å) of nickel oxide by ~100 L exposure. This oxide layer was not stoichiometric nickel(II) oxide: it was characterized by the presence of two distinct O 1s signals, the relative intensities of which depended on the crystallographic nature of the surface. It is tentatively suggested that the oxygen signal with the higher BE be associated with NiIII. Comparison of the X-ray and UV spectra suggests that the oxide film is very non-uniform in thickness, some Ni metal remaining very close to the surface.  相似文献
