Auger electron emission spectra from foil and gas excited carbon beams

Auger electron emission spectra from 2 MeV C⁺ ion excited by collisions with thin carbon foils and Ne gas are presented. The similarity of qualitative features for the C⁺ → C (foil) and C⁺ → Ne spectra indicates the similarity of ionization mechanisms for beam foil and beam gas excitation. The spectra were normalized to the lowest lying Li-like quartet state (1s 2s 2p)⁴P⁰ in carbon by comparison with time delayed foil excited electron decay-in-flight spectra. Comparison to Hartree-Fock calculated transition energies indicates that transitions in three and four electron carbon ions dominate the prompt spectra.     

An optical study of the stretching absorption band near 3 microns from OH- defects in LiNbO3

A near infrared absorption band (λ = 2.87 μ), identified as the 0–1 stretching vibrational band of OH^- defects in LiNbO₃, has been observed at 6, 77, and 300 K. This band was completely polarized perpendicular to the crystallographic c-axis within experimental error and two peaks, separated by approximately 13 cm^?1, were resolved. Both the structure and optical anisotropy of this band were independent of stoichiometry and sample treatments and may be understood in terms of a simple model where protons are captured by O^2- anions forming OH^- defects whose orientations are determined by neighboring O^2- ions.     

The ντ-mass and the τ-decay modes

The behaviour of the different decay modes of the charged heavy lepton τ versus the neutrino ν_τ-mass is analyzed in detail. The τ→ν_τ A ₁ and τ→ν_τ K ^* decay rates have been evaluated using finite energy sum rules. The τ→ν_τ+ “Hadron Continuum” decay rate has been estimated within the framework of Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD). We find that the branching ratios of the semi-leptonic processes: τ→ν_τρ, τ→ν_τπ and τ→ν_τ+ “Hadron Continuum” are very sensitive to the value of the ν_τ-mass. Thus a more precise measurement of these branching ratios could provide an improved upper bound for the neutrino ν_τ-mass.

The object of this paper is to collect some results on the connection between the fibre cohomology groups Hⁱ(X(y),(y)) and the direct image sheaves Rⁱ _*. This generalizes results of Kodaira-Spencer and Grauert-Riemen-schneider giving a unified approach based on the methods of [9].
