A polarographic study of propene-maleic anhydride copolymers

The polarographic behaviour of hydrolyzed propene-maleic anhydride copolymers in the interval pH 2.0–11.0 has been investigated by differential pulse polarography in aqueous lithium chloride solution at 25°C. In dependence on the pH-value, one, two or three signals, belonging to the acid groups in the copolymer, appear in the polarograms. Three apparent polarographic acid constants have been determined graphically from the changes in the half-wave potential of the separate peaks in correlation with pH.     

Kinetics and Mechanism of Mineral Respiration: How Iron Hemes Synchronize Electron Transfer Rates

Anaerobic microorganisms of the Geobacter genus are effective electron sources for the synthesis of nanoparticles, for bioremediation of polluted water, and for the production of electricity in fuel cells. In multistep reactions, electrons are transferred via iron/heme cofactors of c‐type cytochromes from the inner cell membrane to extracellular metal ions, which are bound to outer membrane cytochromes. We measured electron production and electron flux rates to 5×10⁵ e s^?1 per G. sulfurreducens. Remarkably, these rates are independent of the oxidants, and follow zero order kinetics. It turned out that the microorganisms regulate electron flux rates by increasing their Fe²⁺/Fe³⁺ ratios in the multiheme cytochromes whenever the activity of the extracellular metal oxidants is diminished. By this mechanism the respiration remains constant even when oxidizing conditions are changing. This homeostasis is a vital condition for living systems, and makes G. sulfurreducens a versatile electron source.     

Deviating behaviour of bromocarbethoxycarbene in cycloaddition reactions

The effect of Me substituents at alkenes 4 on the rates and activation parameters of cycloaddition reactions of bromocarbethoxycarbene (3) is very small. This carbene does not fit into the general equation (b) and the isoselective relationship (c) of dihalocarbenes. The deviating behaviour can be explained by a diffusion controlled reaction rate of bromocarbethoxycarbene.     

Handling and detection of 25 amol of near-infrared dye deoxynucleotide conjugates by capillary electrophoresis with laser-induced fluorescence detection

Near-infrared dyes are attractive as labeling reagents to enhance sensitivity in trace analysis largely because background fluorescence is low in this spectral region. Here we demonstrate, towards a goal of detecting DNA adducts in small biological samples, that some near-infrared (IR) dye-labeled deoxynucleotides can be separated and detected with high sensitivity by capillary electrophoresis (CE)-laser-induced fluorescence detection (LIF) in a realistic way (handling detection limit of 25 amol) for near-IR dye-labeled deoxynucleotides. This detection limit is achieved by polarity-switching injection of 2.0 microl from a volume of 5.0 microl, in which the compounds are 5 x 10(-12) mol/l in 50% aqueous methanol. Although the adenine and cytosine-containing conjugates co-migrated, the other three (guanine, N2-ethylguanine and thymine) were resolved.
