Os(bpy)2(CO)(enIA)][OTf]2: a novel sulfhydryl-specific metal-ligand complex

The synthesis and physical-chemical characterization of the metal-ligand complex [Os(bpy)2(CO)(enIA)][OTf]2 (where enIA = ethylenediamine iodoacetamide) with a sulfhydryl-specific functional group is described. The UV and visible absorption and luminescence emission, including lifetime and steady-state anisotropy, are reported for the free probe and the probe covalently linked to two test proteins. The spectroscopic properties of the probe are unaffected by chemical modification and subsequent covalent linkage to the proteins. The luminescence lifetime in aqueous buffer is approximately 200 ns and the limiting anisotropy is greater than 0.125, suggesting a potentially useful probe for biophysical investigations.     

T dependence of vibrational dynamics of water in ion-exchanged zeolites A: a detailed Fourier transform infrared attenuated total reflection study

In order to explore the influence of cation substitution on the vibrational dynamics of water molecules in zeolites, the evolution of structural properties of the O-H stretching band of water in fully hydrated Na-A and Mg-exchanged A zeolites has been studied, for different percentages of induced ion exchange, by Fourier transform infrared attenuated total reflection spectroscopy as a function of temperature. The differences revealed in the O-H stretching band shapes have been accounted by fitting the spectra as a sum of four components, corresponding to water molecules exhibiting different types of hydrogen bonding. The dependencies of the relative intensities, peak wave numbers, and bandwidths of the resolved components on temperature and Mg2+ content have been discussed. Evidence of the "structure-maker" role played by a zeolitic surface on physisorbed water, systematically enhanced by increasing the percentage of induced ion exchange, is given in the whole explored temperature range.     

Isoelectric focusing identification of four freshwater fish commercially labeled "perch"

Isoelectric focusing (IEF) was used to distinguish 4 freshwater fish species that are sold in the European Union under the generic label of "perch": Perca fluviatilis (European perch), Lates niloticus (Nile perch), Stizostedion lucioperca (European pikeperch), and Morone chrysops x saxatilis (Sunshine bass). These species have different commercial values but are easily interchangeable because they are sold already filleted, in view of the numerous bones of the whole fish. IEF of the water-soluble proteins extracted from fish muscle resulted in species-specific patterns. None of the bands was common to all 4 species. Intraspecies polymorphism was low and did not concern the bands identified as characteristic of the species.     

Preparation of luminescent Si nanoparticles by tailoring the size,crystallinity and surface composition

The preparation of sizeable quantities of luminescent Si nanoparticles (Si-np) with controlled morphology is a challenging task. Here, we describe two strategies aiming at size reduction of the Si-np produced in a laser-assisted silane pyrolysis reactor without detrimental effects on the process yield and on the nanoparticle structural and compositional properties. The first method is based on the addition of a sensitizer gas to dilute silane and consequently reduce the nucleation centres density without decreasing the reaction temperature. The second consists in the introduction of a collector at a variable distance from the irradiated region to freeze the particle growth and decrease the inter-particle sintering probability. We report on the characterization of the produced Si-np, and we show that by combining the two methods, we are able to prepare 4 nm crystalline core size nanoparticles with a productivity of 1 g per hour. We also describe the enhancement effect of the wet-chemical oxidation processes on the luminescence emission intensity of the Si-np.     

Admissible Galois Structures and Coverings in Regular Mal’cev Categories

Given a regular Gumm category such that any regular epimorphism is effective for descent, we prove that any Birkhoff subcategory in gives rise to an admissible Galois structure. This result allows one to consider some new applications of the categorical Galois theory in the context of topological algebras. Given a regular Mal’cev category , we first characterize the coverings of the Galois structure induced by the subcategory of the abelian objects in . Then we consider as a subcategory of the category of the equivalence relations in , and we characterize the coverings of the corresponding Galois structure . By composing the Galois structures and we obtain the Galois structure induced by as a subcategory of . We give the characterization of the -coverings in terms of the coverings of and .     

13C and 2H NMR study of structure and dynamics in banana B2 phase of a bent-core mesogen

In this paper, the difficulty in orienting the B(2) phase of the banana mesogen 1,3-Phenylene-bis 4-[4-(10-undecenyloxy)-benzoyloxy] benzoate (Pbis11BB) in a relatively high magnetic field is reported based on some observations using both (13)C and (2)H NMR. (2)H NMR spectra recorded for the two labeled isotopomers of Pbis11BB in the isotropic and B(2) phases are shown here. Preliminary results on the deuteron spin-spin relaxation (T(2)) data are reported at 61 MHz in order to underline the peculiar slow dynamics of banana-shaped liquid crystals (BLC), and these results are discussed in the framework of recent studies on similar BLC. The molecular structure and dynamics in the B(2) and crystalline phases are also studied by (13)C solid-state NMR techniques. The results also point to the slow dynamics in the B(2) phase of Pbis11BB. In particular, two-dimensional MAS exchange experiment has been performed to shed light on the molecular conformation structure of the five-ring banana core in the crystalline phase of Pbis11BB, and to compare with that of quantum mechanical calculations reported in the literature.     

Convenient synthesis of electron-donating substituted benzonitriles by photolysis of phenyl halides and esters

Irradiation of electron-donating substituted phenyl halides (fluorides and chlorides) or esters (mesylates, triflates and phosphates) in aqueous MeCN in the presence of KCN gives the corresponding benzonitriles in 48 to 100% yield through an ArSN1 reaction with the intermediacy of a triplet phenyl cation.     

Groups in which every subgroup of infinite rank is almost permutable

In this paper, the structure of locally finite groups of infinite rank whose subgroups of infinite rank are permutable in a subgroup of finite index is investigated.     

On the norms of quaternionic harmonic projection operators

As a consequence of integral bounds for three classes of quaternionic spherical harmonics, we prove some bounds from below for the $(L^p,L^2)$ norm of quaternionic harmonic projectors, for $p\in [1,2]$.     

Eulogy for Professor Mirka Miller (1949–2016)

The CIMPA Research School on Mathematical Models for Security Applications was dedicated to the memory of Emeritus Professor Mirka Miller, who suggested that it be held in Havana. Mirka Miller, member of the editorial board of Mathematics in Computer Science, devoted her research to Graph Theory and Data Security, fields where she made important and beautiful contributions.
