Analysis of oxytetracycline, tetracycline, and chlortetracycline in water using solid-phase extraction and liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry

A method using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry has been developed for determination of trace levels of tetracycline antibiotics in ground water and confined animal feeding operation waste water. Oxytetracycline (OTC), tetracycline (TC), and chlortetracycline (CTC) were extracted from water samples using both polymeric and C18 extraction cartridges. The addition of a buffer containing potassium phosphate and citric acid improved tetracycline recoveries in lagoon water. Method detection limits determined in reagent water fortified with 1 microg l(-1) OTC, TC, and CTC were 0.21, 0.20, and 0.28 microg l(-1). Method detection limits in lagoon water samples fortified at 20 microg l(-1) for OTC, TC, and CTC were 3.6, 3.1, and 3.8 microg l(-1). Variability in recovery from laboratory fortified blanks ranged from 86 to 110% during routine analysis.

Energy levels in 142Nd

The excited states of ¹⁴²Nd were studied by means of the decay of 40 sec ¹⁴²Pm and the ¹⁴²Nd(p, p') reaction via isobaric analog resonances. Approximately sixty levels of ¹⁴²Nd were observed below 5.3 MeV excitation, including several neutron particle-hole states excited strongly in (p, p') at f_{$\text{7}\text{2}$}, p_{$\text{3}\text{2}$}, p_{$\text{1}\text{2}$} and f_{$\text{5}\text{2}$} analog resonances. We have collected together all known energy levels in ¹⁴²Nd and have proposed J^π assignments for 22 excited states. We have also compared the experimental level spectrum (positive-parity states only) with a calculated one based on the shell model.     

Synthesis and characterization of dimensionally ordered semiconductor nanowires within mesoporous silica.

Semiconductor nanowires of silicon have been synthesized within the pores of mesoporous silica using a novel supercritical fluid solution-phase approach. Mesoporous silica, formed by the hydrolysis of tetramethoxysilane (TMOS) in the presence of a triblock copolymer surfactant, was employed for the nucleation and growth of quantum-confined nanowires. The filling of the silica mesopores with crystalline silicon and the anchoring of these nanowires to the sides of the pores were confirmed by several techniques including electron microscopy, powder X-ray diffraction, 29Si magic angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance, infrared spectroscopy, and X-ray fluorescence. Effectively, the silica matrix provides a means of producing a high density of stable, well-ordered arrays of semiconductor nanowires in a low dielectric medium. The ordered arrays of silicon nanowires also exhibited discrete electronic and photoluminescence transitions that could be exploited in a number of applications, including nanodevices and interconnects.
