This is a summary of the projects undertaken by the working group I on high energy and collider physics.     

Global Monopole in Kalb–Ramond Background

In recent, S. SenGupta and S. Sur [Phys. Lett. B 502 (2001) 350] have obtained static vacuum solutions of the gravitational field equations in back ground space time with torsion. The torsion is identified with the field strength of a second-rank anti-symmetric tensor field, namely Kalb-Ramond field. In this work, we present the solutions for the metric outside a monopole resulting from the breaking of a global 0(3) symmetry in Kalb-Ramond background. A comparison is made with the corresponding results predicted by general relativity.     

Non-invasive diagnosis of type 2 diabetes in Helicobacter pylori infected patients using isotope-specific infrared absorption measurements

Helicobacter pylori causes several gastrointestinal diseases and may also contribute to the development of type 2 diabetes (T2D). Several studies suggest that there might be a potential link between H. pylori infection and T2D, but it still remains the subject of debate. Here, we first report the cumulative effect of H. pylori infection and T2D by exploiting the excretion kinetics of ¹³C/¹²C and ¹⁸O/¹⁶O isotope ratios of exhaled breath CO₂ in response to an oral dose of ¹³C-enriched glucose in individuals with T2D and non-diabetic controls (NDC) harbouring the H. pylori infection. Using a high-resolution integrated cavity output spectroscopy (ICOS) technique in the infrared region, we observed that the isotopic fractionations of ¹³C and ¹⁸O in breath CO₂ are distinctly altered in H. pylori infected T2D patients as well as in H. pylori infected NDC. Several optimal diagnostic cut-off points of ¹³C and ¹⁸O isotopes of breath CO₂ were also determined which exhibited the diagnostic sensitivity and specificity of ～97?% and thus suggesting that breath ¹³C and ¹⁸O isotopes might be considered as potential biomarkers for the non-invasive assessment of the gastric pathogen prior to the onset of T2D. This may open a new diagnostic strategy for treating these common diseases in an alternative way.     

Antiproliferative effect of isolated isoquinoline alkaloid from Mucuna pruriens seeds in hepatic carcinoma cells

The present study was undertaken to investigate the antiproliferative action of isolated M1 (6,7-dimethoxy-1,2,3,4-tetrahydroisoquinoline-3-carboxylic acid) from Mucuna pruriens seeds using human hepatic carcinoma cell line (Huh-7 cells). Initially, docking studies was performed to find out the binding affinities of M1 to caspase-3 and 8 enzymes. Later, cytotoxic action of M1 was measured by cell growth inhibition (MTT), followed by caspase-3 and 8 enzymes assay colorimetrically. Our results collectively suggested that M1 had strong binding affinity to caspase-8 in molecular modelling. M1 possessed antiproliferative activity on Huh-7 cells (EC₅₀ = 13.97 μM) and also inhibited the action of caspase-8 enzyme, signified process of apoptosis. M1 was active against Huh-7 cells that may be useful for future hepatic cancer treatment.     

Molybdenum pentachloride (MoCl5) or molybdenum dichloride dioxide (MoO2Cl2): advanced catalysts for thioacetalization of heterocyclic, aromatic and aliphatic compounds

A new, convenient and mild method for thioacetalization of heterocyclic, aromatic and aliphatic compounds catalyzed by MoCl₅ or MoO₂Cl₂ is described. This novel method is important for the synthesis of the difficult to prepare heterocyclic thioacetals such as the pterin thioacetals and it offers significant advantages such as high conversion, short reaction times and simplicity in operation.     

A novel cation induced polymeric chain in Na8[{Cu(gly)2}2]{H2(H2W12O42)}]?·?24H2O: hydrothermal synthesis, spectroscopic characterization and X-ray structure analysis

A novel bis(glycinato)copper(II)paradodecatungstate Na₈[{Cu(gly)₂}₂]-{H₂(H₂W₁₂O₄₂)}] · 24H₂O (1) has been synthesized under hydrothermal conditions. The crystal structure of 1 reveals an infinite one-dimensional chain along the [100] direction and is built from paradodecatungstate (H₂W₁₂O₄₂)¹⁰⁻ clusters joined through [Cu(gly)₂] moieties. Parallel chains are interlinked by NaO₆ octahedra to generate a two-dimensional network.     

Microwave assisted synthesis,spectroscopic and antibacterial studies of bis(cyclopentadienyl)hafnium(IV) derivatives with benzil bis(aroyl hydrazones)

The reactions of (η⁵-C₅H₅)₂HfCl₂ with benzil bis(hydrazones) (LH₂), derived from benzil and aromatic acid hydrazides (benzoic, 2-chlorobenzoic, 4-chlorobenzoic, 2-methylbenzoic or 4-methoxybenzoic) have been studied in anhydrous tetrahydrofuran in the presence of n-butylamine by both conventional methods and by microwave heating. Binuclear complexes of type [{(η⁵-C₅H₅)₂HfCl}₂(L)] were obtained in both cases. Tentative structural conclusions are drawn for the reaction products based upon analyses, electrical conductance, magnetic moment and spectral (UV–vis, IR, ¹H NMR and ¹³C NMR) data. A FAB-mass spectrum of one compound was also recorded to confirm the binuclear structures. Studies were conducted to assess the growth inhibiting potential of the complexes and free ligands against various bacterial strains.     

A simple strategy for quantum dot assisted selective detection of cadmium ions

Here we report a simple strategy for selective detection of cadmium ions by manipulating the electron transfer pathways of surface-engineered quantum dots.
