New Pathways in Plastics Recycling

The catalytic degradation of polyethylene to short-chain hydrocarbons is possible with zirconium hydride compounds (see picture), and represents the first step in the reversal of Ziegler - Natta polymerization. Thus, even in the case of polyolefins the important target of plastics recycling, the recovery of reusable monomers from polymer waste, may be achieved.     

Spectral stabilization of amplified pulses from synchronously-pumped dye laser systems

We demonstrate an effective scheme for passively stabilizing the single shot spectrum of the amplified pulses from a synchronously pumped dye laser system. This scheme is easy to implement and inexpensive. Data from resonant and nonresonant coherent transient experiments are shown to illustrate its effectiveness.     

Stoichiometry and impurity concentration in synthetically grown iron pyrite crystals and their constituents

Summary The iron to sulfur ratio in different synthetic iron pyrite samples, prepared as powders and crystals, was measured by means of ICP-AES (Inductively Coupled Plasma with Atomic Emission Spectrometry). A remarkably high sulfur deficiency in single crystals grown by chemical vapor transport has been established which leads to the gross formula FeS_2–xfor 0.242, Te) and the quartz container material (Si, O). The advantage of the ICP-methods is the direct employment of the samples after a dissolution process without further preparation steps.

Off-shell NN annihilation studied in π+p interactions at 8 and 16 GeV/c

Interactions in which the baryon is emitted forwards in the c.m.s. are studied in 8 and 16 GeV/cπ⁺p collisions. These interactions are interpreted as representing baryon exchange. The properties of such off-shell $\text{N}$N annihilation events are studied. It is found that the multiplicity distribution of the multi-pion system as a function of the effective mass for events with |u_pp| < 1 GeV² is the same as for real $\text{N}\text{N}$ annihilations.     

Spontaneous Raman scattering in atomic thallium vapor

Using a cw argon-ion laser, we have measured the spontaneous Raman scattering cross section, σ_R, and linewidth in atomic thallium vapor. For 4880-Å excitation, σ_R = 1.6 × 10^?27 cm². We observe no pressure broadening of the Raman line at vapor pressures to 100 torr.
