Development of simultaneous analysis of tryptophan metabolites in serum and gastric juice – an investigation towards establishing a biomarker test for gastric cancer diagnosis

To evaluate changes in tryptophan metabolism and discover diagnostic biomarkers for gastric cancer, a quantitative method was developed for tryptophan and its seven metabolites (indole‐3‐lactic acid, anthranilic acid, serotonin, nicotinic acid, kynurenic acid, kynurenine and 3‐indoxyl sulfate) in both human serum and gastric juice using liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry (LC–MS/MS). Serum and gastric juice were prepared with a simple protein precipitation using aqueous 0.1% formic acid and acetonitrile. As a result, it was found that the kynurenine pathway of tryptophan metabolism was activated in gastric cancer and that the metabolic ratio of kynurenine/tryptophan, which reflects the enzyme activity of indoleamine‐2,3‐dioxygenase, was associated with the observed metabolic changes. Finally, the investigation of tryptophan metabolites, especially kynurenic acid, in serum and gastric juice might serve as biomarkers for gastric cancer. The findings in this study provide critical information of tryptophan metabolism which can be applied to a serum‐based diagnostic test for gastric cancer.

Interactive Phenomena of a Rotating Arc and a Premixed CH4 Flame

The interactive phenomena between a rotating arc and a premixed methane/air flame have been investigated. The effects of the rotating arc on the flame were observed: both lean and rich flammability limit was extended with the rotating arc on. More interestingly, the opposite interactions, i.e., the effects of the flame on the rotating arc, were also observed: the arc length, angular speed, and electrical characteristics are affected by the flame. An analysis of the optical emission spectra showed that the rotating arc generates chemically active species such as excited N₂ molecules and O and H atoms. An analysis of the gas products indicated that the concentrations of the major gas products such as CO₂, CO, and H₂ were not significantly affected by the rotating arc, although the flammability limit are significantly extended. Unlike these major gas products, minor products like NO_x emissions increased by an order of magnitude in the presence of a rotating arc under certain air/fuel conditions.     

Modeling and optimization of laser transmission joining process between PET and 316L stainless steel using response surface methodology

Laser joining parameters play a very significant role in determining the quality of laser transmission joining between PET films and 316L stainless steel plates. In the present work, Laser power, joining speed and stand-off-distance were considered as joining parameters. The parameters that influence the quality of laser transmission joining were optimized using response methodology for achieving good joint strength and minimal joint width. The central composite second-order Rotational Design (CCRD) has been utilized to plan the experiments and response surface methodology (RSM) is employed to develop mathematical relationships between joining parameters and desired responses. Based on the developed mathematical models, the interaction effects of the process parameters on laser transmission joining were investigated and optimum joining parameters were achieved. The experimental values nearly agree with the predicted values from mathematical models, indicates that the models can predict the responses adequately and optimize the key process parameters quickly.     

EXISTENCE AND NONEXISTENCE OF GLOBAL SOLUTIONS FOR A SEMI-LINEAR HEAT EQUATION WITH FRACTIONAL LAPLACIAN

In this paper,we are concerned with the existence and non-existence of global solutions of a semi-linear heat equation with fractional Laplacian.We obtain some extension of results of Weissler who considered the case α = 1,and h ≡ 1.     

First-principles study of structural stability and elastic property of pre-perovskite PbTiO3

The structural stability and the elastic properties of a novel structure of lead titanate,which is named preperovskite PbTiO₃ （PP-PTO） and is constructed with TiO₆ octahedral columns arranged in a one-dimensional manner,are investigated by using first-principles calculations.PP-PTO is energetically unstable compared with conventional perovskite phases,however it is mechanically stable.The equilibrium transition pressures for changing from preperovskite to cubic and tetragonal phases are 0.5 GPa and 1.4 GPa,respectively,with first-order characteristics.Further,the differences in elastic properties between pre-perovskite and conventional perovskite phases are discussed for the covalent bonding network,which shows a highly anisotropic character in PP-PTO.This study provides a crucial insight into the structural stabilities of PP-PTO and conventional perovskite.     

Synthesis and characterization of eumelanin‐inspired poly(indoylenearylenevinylene)s and poly(indoylenearyleneethynylene)s

Four novel conjugated polymers containing the eumelanin‐inspired indole core have been successfully synthesized using common cross coupling reactions. These polymers differed by the arylene and the carbon–carbon bond linkage. Optoelectronic experiments of these polymers suggest that the ethynylene linkage contributed to the red‐shifted absorption spectra and blue‐shifted emission spectra when compared to the vinylene linkage polymers. Furthermore, the optical bandgaps of the poly(indoylenearyleneethynylene)s (PIAEs) were smaller compared to the poly(indoylenearylenevinylene)s (PIAVs). Surprisingly, the HOMOs of these polymers were less affected by the nature of the carbon–carbon linkage. However, the LUMOs of the PIAEs were lower in comparison to the PIAVs. These eumelanin‐inspired PIAEs and PIAVs are good fluorophores with fluorescence quantum yields ranging from 0.12 to 0.67 and have good thermal stability for applications such as in organic light‐emitting diodes. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
