Determination of phenytoin in exhaled breath condensate using electromembrane extraction followed by capillary electrophoresis

Application of hollow fiber-based electromembrane extraction was studied for extraction and quantification of phenytoin from exhaled breath condensate (EBC). Phenytoin is extracted from EBC through a supported liquid membrane consisting of 1-octanol impregnated in the walls of a hollow fiber, and into an alkaline aqueous acceptor solution inside the lumen of the fiber. Under the obtained conditions of electromembrane extraction, that is, the extraction time of 15 min, stirring speed of 750 rpm, donor phase pH at 11.0, acceptor pH at 13.0, and an applied voltage of 15 V across the supported liquid membrane, an enrichment factor of 102-fold correspond to extraction percent of 25.5% was achieved. Good linearity was obtained over the concentration range of 0.001–0.10 µg/mL (r² = 0.9992). Limits of detection and quantitation were 0.001 and 0.003 µg/mL, respectively. The proposed method was successfully applied to determine phenytoin from EBC samples of patients receiving the drug. No interfering peaks were detected that indicating excellent selectivity of the method. The intra- and interday precisions (RSDs) were less than 14%.     

Exo/endo stereocontrolled synthesis of spiroindoloindolizidines by using classical and microwave conditions via the 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition reaction

Using both classical reflux and microwave-mediated conditions, a series of new spiroindoloindolizidines was synthesized by multicomponent 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition of azomethine ylides in unprecedented exo/endo stereocontrolled. Both conditions easily afforded two identical and separable exo/endo diastereomeric ratios of cycloadducts. However, the ratio of two diastereomeric products obtained from conventional conditions was reversed in all examined cases when the reactions were explored under microwave-mediated conditions. As expected, utilizing the microwave-assisted conditions produced higher yields and reaction rates compared to classical conditions. The structure and exact stereochemistry of synthesized cycloadducts were determined by applying various 2D-NMR spectroscopic techniques and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Finally, the mechanism of the reaction has been briefly investigated by using density functional theory (DFT) calculations.

After being introduced by Shannon as a measure of disorder and unavailable information, the notion of entropy has found its applications in a broad range of scientific disciplines. In this paper, we present a systematic review on the applications of entropy and related information-theoretical concepts in the design, implementation and evaluation of cryptographic schemes, algorithms, devices and systems. Moreover, we study existing trends, and establish a roadmap for future research in these areas.

KF‐Melamine Formaldehyde Resin (KF‐MFR) as a Versatile and Efficient Heterogeneous Reagent for Aldol Condensation of Aldehydes and Ketones under Microwave Irradiation

KF‐Melamine formaldehyde resin (KF‐MFR) was demonstrated to be a highly efficient heterogenious catalyst for cross‐aldol condensation under microwave irradiation. In this synthesis, various aldehydes and ketones were condensed together in the presence of supported KF on melamine‐formaldehyde resin to afford different chalcone derivatives in good to excellent yields. KF‐MFR proved to have unique termal and chemical resistance and can be reused for many consecutive runs without remarkable loss in catalytic activity.

Synthesis of new 3-cyanoacetamide pyrrole and 3-acetonitrile pyrrole derivatives

A new fused heterocyclic derivatives of pyrrole containing acetonitrile or cyanoacetonitrile moiety at 3-position is described by a one-pot multicomponent reaction. The reaction of dimedone, various aniline, aryl glyoxal with malononitrile/ethyl cyanoacetate/methyl cyanoacetate under mild conditions. The present method does not involve any hazardous organic solvents or catalysts. The significant features of this method are readily available starting materials, good yields, and easy purification.     

Dehydration of acetonitrile using cross-linked sodium alginate membrane containing nano-sized NaA zeolite

Pervaporation (PV) separation of water–acetonitrile mixture using sodium alginate (NaAlg) based mixed matrix membranes (MMM) comprising different amounts of nano NaA zeolite (10, 20 and 30 wt%) is investigated in various concentrations of water and temperatures. The prepared membranes are modified by sulfosuccinic acid (SSA) as a crosslinking agent. NaAlg-NaA/SSA membranes are synthesized by a solution casting technique. The process and membrane performance including separation factor, flux and activation energy of permeation are determined. Results reveal that adding of nano zeolite may lead to an increase in the flux and the separation factor of sodium alginate membrane up to 123 and 169%. In addition, using MMM in dehydration of a feed containing 30 wt% of water shows much better performance than alginate membrane. Furthermore, the activation energy of water permeation through MMM is predicted lower than sodium alginate membrane which reflects the facilitated permeation of water through MMM.
