Observation of ZZ production in p-p collisions at sqrt s=1.96 TeV

We present an observation for ZZ-->l+l-l'+l'- (l, l'=e or mu) production in p[over]p collisions at a center-of-mass energy of sqrt[s]=1.96 TeV. Using 1.7 fb(-1) of data collected by the D0 experiment at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider, we observe three candidate events with an expected background of 0.14(+0.03)_(-0.02) events. The significance of this observation is 5.3 standard deviations. The combination of D0 results in this channel, as well as in ZZ-->l+l- nu[over]nu, yields a significance of 5.7 standard deviations and a combined cross section of sigma(ZZ)=1.60+/-0.63(stat)+0.16_-0.17(syst) pb.     

Observation of the Bc meson in the exclusive decay Bc-->J/psipi

A fully reconstructed Bc-->J/psipi signal is observed with the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron pp[over] collider using 1.3 fb(-1) of integrated luminosity. The signal consists of 54+/-12 candidates with a significance that exceeds 5 standard deviations, and confirms earlier observations of this decay. The measured mass of the Bc meson is 6300+/-14(stat)+/-5(syst) MeV/c2.     

Dispersion of polymeric-coated–silica aerogel particles in unsaturated polyester composites: Effects on thermal-mechanical properties

The thermal-mechanical properties of unsaturated polyester (UP) composite were enhanced by the dispersion of silica aerogel (SA) with preserved pores. Low-cost SA was prepared from rice husk via the sol-gel process and ambient pressure drying. A new method was proposed to encapsulate the hydrophobic aerogel surface pores with hydrophilic polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) film using the fluidized-bed coating process. The dispersion of PVA-coated aerogel with preserved pores in the polyester matrix resulted in an increase of specific compressive strength (44.1?MPa?·?cm³?g^?1), thermal insulation (0.23?W?m^?1?K^?1), and thermal stability (T_onset?=?310°C), but decreased the glass transition temperature (T_g?=?260°C).     

Rho-kinase inhibitors from adlay seeds

Rho-kinase enzymes are one of the most important targets recently identified in our bodies. Several lines of evidence indicate that these enzymes are involved in many diseases and cellular disorders. ROCK inhibitors may have clinical applications for cancer, hypertension, glaucoma, etc. Our study aims to identify the possible involvement of Rho-kinase inhibition to the multiple biological activities of adlay seeds and provide a rationale for their folkloric medicines. Hence, we evaluated Rho-kinase I and II inhibitory activity of the ethanol extract and 28 compounds derived from the seeds. A molecular docking assay was designed to estimate the binding affinity of the tested compounds with the target enzymes. The results of our study suggest a possible involvement of Rho-kinase inhibition to the multiple biological activities of the seeds. Furthermore, the results obtained with the tested compounds revealed some interesting skeletons as a scaffold for design and development of natural Rho-kinase inhibitors.     

Supercapacitor performance of activated carbon derived from rotten carrot in aqueous,organic and ionic liquid based electrolytes

In this work, we report the synthesis of porous activated carbon (AC). AC was derived from rotten carrot, at different values of activating temperature under inert atmosphere, employing chemical activation method and ZnCl₂ as activation agent. On the basis of results observed by surface area and pore size analysis, effect of activation temperature on synthesized AC was determined. Other material properties such as morphology, thermal stability, vibrational response, and crystal structure of prepared AC were studied using standard techniques of material characterization. Further, the electrochemical performance of synthesized AC was studied as an electrode, in aqueous, organic and ionic liquid based electrolyte. It was found that the synthesized AC based electrode exhibits highest specific capacitance (135.5?F?g^?1 at 10?mHz) in aqueous electrolyte and highest specific energy (29.1?Wh?kg^?1 at 2.2?A?g^?1) and specific power (142.5?kW?kg^?1 at 2.2?A?g^?1) in ionic liquid based electrolyte. This shows the suitability of synthesized material for use in energy storage applications.     

On linear combinations of two tripotent, idempotent, and involutive matrices

Computational Approaches for the Design of Novel Anticancer Compounds Based on Pyrazolo[3,4-d]pyrimidine Derivatives as TRAP1 Inhibitor

In the present in-silico study, various computational techniques were applied to determine potent compounds against TRAP1 kinase. The pharmacophore hypothesis DHHRR_1 consists of important features required for activity. The 3D QSAR study showed a statistically significant model with R² = 0.96 and Q² = 0.57. Leave one out (LOO) cross-validation (R² CV = 0.58) was used to validate the QSAR model. The molecular docking study showed maximum XP docking scores (−11.265, −10.532, −10.422, −10.827, −10.753 kcal/mol) for potent pyrazole analogs (42, 46, 49, 56, 43), respectively, with significant interactions with amino acid residues (ASP 594, CYS 532, PHE 583, SER 536) against TRAP1 kinase receptors (PDB ID: 5Y3N). Furthermore, the docking results were validated using the 100 ns MD simulations performed for the selected five docked complexes. The selected inhibitors showed relatively higher binding affinities than the TRAP1 inhibitor molecules present in the literature. The ZINC database was used for a virtual screening study that screened ZINC05297837, ZINC05434822, and ZINC72286418, which showed similar binding interactions to those shown by potent ligands. Absorption, distribution, metabolism, and excretion (ADME) analysis showed noticeable results. The results of the study may be helpful for the further development of potent TRAP1 inhibitors     

Radioactivity measurements and risk assessments of spa waters in some areas in Turkey

The current study presents the results of the activity of radionuclides in spa waters, and evaluates their radiological influences on the population consuming these waters in the Central and Eastern Black Sea regions of Turkey. Since these waters are used for therapy and consumption purposes unconsciously, their radiological impact on the people was computed by taking into consideration the annual intake through ingestion of ²²⁶Ra, ²³²Th, ⁴⁰K, ¹³⁷Cs and ²²²Rn. The mean activities were estimated to be 11.35 for gross alpha, 6.23 for gross beta, 2.96 for ²²⁶Ra, 0.42 for ²³²Th, 0.069 for ¹³⁷Cs, 0.19 for ⁴⁰K, and 267 Bq L^–1 for ²²²Rn, respectively. The estimated effective doses from spa water were found to be 49.77 µSv a^–1 (²²⁶Ra), 5.95 µSv a^–1 (²³²Th), 0.07 µSv a^–1 (¹³⁷Cs), 0.83 µSv a^–1 (⁴⁰K) and 56.03 µSv a^–1 (²²²Rn). These values were evaluated and compared with related verified values from literature. Also, physico-chemical characterizations of spa water samples considered in the current study were investigated. This study would be useful for consumers and official authorities for the assessment of radiation exposure risk due to usage of the considered spa waters.
