Spectral approximation in the numerical stability study of nondivergent viscous flows on a sphere

The accuracy of calculating the normal modes in the numerical linear stability study of two-dimensional nondivergent viscous flows on a rotating sphere is analyzed. Discrete spectral problems are obtained by truncating Fourier's series of the spherical harmonics for both the basic flow and the disturbances to spherical polynomials of degrees K and N, respectively. The spectral theory for the closed operators [1], and embedding theorems for the Hilbert and Banach spaces of smooth functions on a sphere are used to estimate the rate of convergence of the eigenvalues and eigenvectors. It is shown that the convergence takes place if the basic state is sufficiently smooth, and the truncation numbers K and N of Fourier's series for the basic flow and disturbances tend to infinity keeping the ratio N/K fixed. The convergence rate increases with the smoothness of the basic flow and with the power s of the Laplace operator in the vorticity equation diffusion term. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Mechanism of deformation-twin formation in nanocrystalline metals

A theoretical model is proposed to describe the nucleation of deformation twins at grain boundaries in nanocrystalline materials under the action of an applied stress and the stress field of a dipole of junction or grain-boundary wedge disclinations. The model is used to consider pure nanocrystalline aluminum and copper with an average grain size of about 30 nm. The conditions of barrier-free twinning-dislocation nucleation are studied. These conditions are shown to be realistic for the metals under study. As the twin-plate thickness increases, one observes two stages of local hardening and an intermediate stage of local flow of a nanocrystalline metal on the scale of one nanograin. In all stages, the critical stress increases with decreasing disclination-dipole strength. The equilibrium thickness and shape of the twin plate are analyzed and found to agree well with the well-known results of experimental observations.     

Novel method for preparation of cyclodextrin polymers: physico-chemical characterization and cytotoxicity

The objective of this work was to optimize the synthesis procedure of soluble cyclodextrin polymers developed by Weltrowski et al. The use of the parameters indicated by the latter in our laboratory led to a lower result, which did not exceed 15 % (w/w). The new method resulted simultaneously in two fractions, a water soluble one and an insoluble one with a yield of 40 and 85 % (w/w), respectively. Only soluble cyclodextrin polymers were characterized along with the cytotoxicity study. The optimized soluble polymers were characterized by Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectrophotometer, Thermogravimetric Analyzer, Differential Scanning Calorimetry, Powder X-Ray Diffraction Analysis and Size Exclusion Chromatography. In vitro cytotoxicity against peritoneal macrophage cells of female CD1 mice showed that soluble poly-α-CD and poly-γ-CD were less cytotoxic than soluble poly-β-CD at small dose and the opposite was true at higher dose. In conclusion, temperature and time could be used to optimize the yield of polymer cyclodextrins, which will have a broad use in the drug delivery system.     

A cohomological index of Fuller type for parameterized set-valued maps in normed spaces

We construct a cohomological index of the Fuller type for set-valued flows in normed linear spaces satisfying the properties of existence, excision, additivity, homotopy and topological invariance. In particular, the constructed index detects periodic orbits and stationary points of set-valued dynamical systems, i.e., those generated by differential inclusions. The basic methods to calculate the index are also presented.
