Nonlocality and the Rotating Wave Approximation

The effect of the rotating-wave approximation (RWA) on the coupling between an atom and the electromagnetic field is studied in the dipole approximation. It is demonstrated that use of the RWA results in an explicitly nonlocal interaction.     

Correlation of the Rates of Solvolysis of the Benzhydryldimethylsulfonium Ion. Application of the Aromatic Ring Parameter(1)

Values for the specific rates of solvolysis of the benzhydryldimethylsulfonium ion in 34 solvents have been analyzed using various forms of the extended Grunwald-Winstein equation. The specific rates are insensitive toward changes in solvent nucleophilicity (N(T)) values, and they correlate best against a combination of Y(+) values (based on the solvolyses of the 1-adamantyldimethylsulfonium ion) and aromatic ring parameter (I) values. Common-molecule return is observed, being especially powerful in solvents rich in fluoro alcohol; the logarithm of the associated mass law constant correlates inversely with the solvent N(T) values. The product selectivities in ethanol-water mixtures are also consistent with an S(N)1 mechanism for the solvolyses.     

Gap solitons in a two-channel microresonator structure

We show that, when two channel waveguides are coupled by a sequence of periodically spaced microresonators, the group-velocity dispersion is low in the vicinity of the gap associated with the resonant frequency of the resonators. This low dispersion permits the excitation of a gap soliton with much lower energy than in a gap of similar width caused by Bragg reflection.     

Carrier-envelope phase-controlled quantum interference of injected photocurrents in semiconductors

We demonstrate quantum interference control of injected photocurrents in a semiconductor using the phase stabilized pulse train from a mode-locked Ti:sapphire laser. Measurement of the comb offset frequency via this technique results in a signal-to-noise ratio of 40 dB (10 Hz resolution bandwidth), enabling solid-state detection of carrier-envelope phase shifts of a Ti:sapphire oscillator.
