This study evaluated the correlation between radioactivity concentrations and soil properties, and determined the total annual effective dose near an underground geologic repository for transuranic wastes. Soil samples were collected from two historical monitoring areas (Near Field and Cactus Flats). Alpha-particle spectrometry was used for the analysis of 241Am, 239+240Pu and 238U, while 137Cs, 40K, 232Th and 226Ra were detected by gamma ray spectrometry. Higher radioactivity concentrations and stronger positive correlations between radioactivity concentrations and soil properties were obtained in Cactus Flats compared to Near Field. The total annual effective dose was lower than the recommended limit of 1 mSv y??1.

We study experimentally the collective dynamics of two delay-coupled semiconductor lasers. The lasers are coupled by mutual injection of their emitted light beams, at a distance for which coupling delay times are non-negligible. This system is known to exhibit lag synchronization, with one laser leading and the other one lagging the dynamics. Our setup is designed such that light travels along different paths in the two coupling directions, which allows independent control of the two coupling strengths. A comparison of unidirectional and bidirectional coupling reveals that the leader-laggard roles can be switched by acting upon the coupling architecture of the system. Additionally, numerical simulations show that a more extensive control of the network architecture can also lead to changes in the dynamics of the system. Finally, we discuss the relevance of these results for bidirectional chaotic communications.  相似文献

Here we present a combined experimental and theoretical study on the secondary structure of isolated proteins as a function of charge state. In infrared spectra of the proteins ubiquitin and cytochrome c, amide I (C=O stretch) and amide II (N–H bend) bands can be found at positions that are typical for condensed‐phase proteins. For high charge states a new band appears, substantially red‐shifted from the amide II band observed at lower charge states. The observations are interpreted in terms of Coulomb‐driven transitions in secondary structures from mostly helical to extended C5‐type hydrogen‐bonded structures. Support for this interpretation comes from simple energy considerations as well as from quantum chemical calculations on model peptides. This transition in secondary structure is most likely universal for isolated proteins that occur in mass spectrometric experiments.  相似文献

A study of the gas-phase parameters involved in ArF laser induced chemical vapour deposition of silicon-oxide thin films is presented. A complete set of experiments has been performed showing the influence of the concentration of the precursor gases, N2O and SiH4, and their influence on total and partial pressures on film growth and properties. In this paper we demonstrate the ability of this LCVD method to deposit silicon oxide films of different compositions and densities by appropriate control of gas composition and total pressure. Moreover, a material specific calibration plot comprising data obtained using different preparation techniques is presented, allowing determination of the stoichiometry of SiO x films by using FTIR spectroscopy independently of the deposition method. For the range of processing conditions examined, the experimental results suggest that chemical processes governing deposition take place mainly in the gas phase.  相似文献

Levels of intracellular Ca2+ were monitored using fluorescence from Ca2+-sensitive dyes in chick embryonic heart cells cultured in an annular geometry. There was spontaneous starting and stopping of reentrant waves of activity. The results are modeled using modified FitzHugh-Nagumo equations representing pacemakers embedded in a conducting medium. These results provide a potential mechanism for spontaneous abnormal cardiac rhythms in which there are rapid heart beats (tachycardias) that repetitively start and stop.  相似文献

We discuss transformation laws of electric and magnetic fields under Lorentz transformations, deduced from the classical field theory. It is found that we can connect the resulting expression for a bivector formed with those fields, with the expression deduced from the Wigner transformation rules for spin-1 functions of massive particles. This mass parameter should be interpreted because the constancy of speed of light forbids the existence of the photon mass.  相似文献

In this work we report the synthesis of nanocomposites based on nanoparticles of cobalt titanate and titanium dioxide in their anatase crystalline phase by a sol–gel process. The synthesized nanoparticles of titanate vary from 1 to 6 nm in size. They are embedded in the anatase matrix, and they were obtained from TiO2 monoliths doped with Co2+. The formation of cobalt titanate nanoparticles showed a linear dependence on the cobalt concentration. The cobalt titanate nanocrystals are very stable even at temperatures higher than 1000 °C. The crystalline structures of the samples were examined using high-resolution transmission electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction. Molecular simulation methods were utilized for a better understanding and for improving the analytical data interpretation of the experimental results. We have performed a search for B(s)(0) --> micro(+) micro(-) and B(0) --> micro(+) micro(-) decays in pp collisions at square root s = 1.96 TeV using 2 fb(-1) of integrated luminosity collected by the CDF II detector at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. The observed number of B(s)(0) and B0 candidates is consistent with background expectations. The resulting upper limits on the branching fractions are B(B(s)0) --> micro(+) micro(-)) <5.8 x 10(-8) and B(B(0) --> micro(+) micro(-))<1.8 x 10(-8) at 95% C.L.  相似文献

This paper contains the second part of a study on a smart panel with five decentralized velocity feedback control units using proof mass electrodynamic actuators [Gonzalez Diaz et al., J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 124, 886 (2008)]. The implementation of five decentralized control loops is analyzed, both theoretically and experimentally. The stability properties of the five decentralized control units have been assessed with the generalized Nyquist criterion by plotting the loci of the eigenvalues of the fully populated matrix of frequency response functions between the five error signals and five input signals to the amplifiers driving the actuators. The control performance properties have been assessed in terms of the spatially averaged response of the panel measured with a scanning laser vibrometer and the total sound power radiated measured in an anechoic room. The two analyses have shown that reductions of up to 10 dB in both vibration response and sound radiation are measured at low audio frequencies, below about 250 Hz.  相似文献
