Aziridination of 3-methyl-4-nitro-5-styrylisoxazoles

Herein we describe the preparation of a novel class of isoxazolyl aziridines. The products were obtained exclusively as cis diastereoisomers.     

Selecting hidden Markov model state number with cross-validated likelihood

The problem of estimating the number of hidden states in a hidden Markov model is considered. Emphasis is placed on cross-validated likelihood criteria. Using cross-validation to assess the number of hidden states allows to circumvent the well-documented technical difficulties of the order identification problem in mixture models. Moreover, in a predictive perspective, it does not require that the sampling distribution belongs to one of the models in competition. However, computing cross-validated likelihood for hidden Markov models for which only one training sample is available, involves difficulties since the data are not independent. Two approaches are proposed to compute cross-validated likelihood for a hidden Markov model. The first one consists of using a deterministic half-sampling procedure, and the second one consists of an adaptation of the EM algorithm for hidden Markov models, to take into account randomly missing values induced by cross-validation. Numerical experiments on both simulated and real data sets compare different versions of cross-validated likelihood criterion and penalised likelihood criteria, including BIC and a penalised marginal likelihood criterion. Those numerical experiments highlight a promising behaviour of the deterministic half-sampling criterion.     

A highly efficient stereocontrolled synthesis of (S)-2′,6′-dimethyltyrosine [(S)-DMT]

A new, practical and very convenient stereocontrolled synthesis of (S)-2′,6′-dimethyltyrosine [(S)-Dmt] 4 was accomplished in a good yield, starting from the chiral synthon 1,4-N,N-[(S)-phenylethyl]-piperazine-2,5-dione 1. The procedure, which is an extension of our original strategy and occurs with a high level of stereoselectivity (>98%), is simple and inexpensive allowing us to prepare the unnatural α-aminoacid (S)-Dmt also on a multi-gram scale.     

The synthesis and self‐assembly of ABA amphiphilic block copolymers containing styrene and oligo(ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate in dilute aqueous solutions: Elevated cloud point temperatures for thermoresponsive micelles

A series of ABA amphiphilic triblock copolymers possessing polystyrene (PS) central hydrophobic blocks, one group with “short” PS blocks (DP = 54–86) and one with “long” PS blocks (DP = 183–204) were synthesized by atom transfer radical polymerization. The outer hydrophilic blocks were various lengths of poly(oligoethylene glycol methyl ether) methacrylate, a comb‐like polymer. The critical aggregation concentrations were recorded for certain block copolymer samples and were found to be in the range circa 10⁻⁹ mol L⁻¹ for short PS blocks and circa 10⁻¹² mol L⁻¹ for long PS blocks. Dilute aqueous solutions were analyzed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and demonstrated that the short PS block copolymers formed spherical micelles and the long PS block copolymers formed predominantly spherical micelles with smaller proportions of cylindrical and Y‐branched cylindrical micelles. Dynamic light scattering analysis results agreed with the TEM observations demonstrating variations in micelle size with PS and POEGMA chain length: the hydrodynamic diameters (D_H) of the shorter PS block copolymer micelles increased with increasing POEGMA block lengths while maintaining similar PS micellar core diameters (D_C); in contrast the values of D_H and D_C for the longer PS block copolymer micelles decreased. Surface‐pressure isotherms were recorded for two of the samples and these indicated close packing of a short PS block copolymer at the air–water interface. The aggregate solutions were demonstrated to be stable over a 38‐day period with no change in aggregate size or noticeable precipitation. The cloud point temperatures of certain block copolymer aggregate solutions were measured and found to be in the range 76–93 °C; significantly these were ∼11 °C higher in temperature than those of POEGMA homopolymer samples with similar chain lengths. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Stirring phenomena in centrifugal casting of pipes

In the centrifugal horizontal casting of steel pipes, the normally used rotational speed results in an acceleration of 100 times gravity within the liquid metal layer. Due to such centrifugal forces liquid metal seems to have a body rotation. However metallurgical analysis of pipes show spatial variations in solidification structure which can only originate from recirculating flows. The present study is concerned with the analysis of such stirring motions. Both theoretical and experimental approaches are presented.

Résumé Dans le procédé d'élaboration par coulée centrifuge horizontale de tubes d'acier, la vitesse de rotation utilisée conduit à une accélération de 100 g dans le métal liquide. A cause des forces centrifuges qui en résultent, le métal semble animé d'une rotation en bloc. Cependant, des analyses métallurgiques effectuées sur des tubes ainsi élaborés montrent des variations spatiales de la structure de solidification dont l'origine est la présence d'écoulements de recirculation. La présente étude concerne l'analyse de ces écoulements. Les résultats de ces deux approaches, théorique et expérimentale, sont présentés.

     

Memory recall in arousing situations – an emotional von Restorff effect?

Background  

Previous research has demonstrated a relationship between memory recall and P300 amplitude in list learning tasks, but the variables mediating this P300-recall relationship are not well understood. In the present study, subjects were required to recall items from lists consisting of 12 words, which were presented in front of pictures taken from the IAPS collection. One word per list is made distinct either by font color or by a highly arousing background IAPS picture. This isolation procedure was first used by von Restorff. Brain potentials were recorded during list presentation.     

Validation of Sun Exposure Reported Annually Against Interim Self‐report and Daily Sun Diaries

Data on personal sun exposure over a period exceeding the immediate past days or weeks are typically self‐reported in brief questionnaire items. The validity of such self‐reporting of longer term personal sun exposure, for example over a year, including detail on variation across seasons, has not previously been investigated. In a volunteer sample (n = 331) of Australian adults aged 18 years and over, we assessed the 12‐month reliability of sun exposure reported separately for each season, and its accuracy compared to a daily sun diary in the same season. Seasonal time outdoors displayed fair‐to‐good reliability between baseline and end of study (12 months), with responses showing higher agreement at lower levels of time outdoors. There was good agreement for ranking of individuals' time outdoors with the daily sun diary data, although the actual diary time outdoors was typically considerably lower than the self‐reported questionnaire data. Place of residence, education, being a smoker, day of the week (i.e. working day vs nonworking day) and working mainly outdoors were significant predictors of agreement. While participants overestimated their actual time outdoors, the self‐report questionnaire provided a valid ranking of long‐term sun exposure against others in the study that was reliable over time.
