In this work, hydrogels of polyacrylamide (or PAAm) with confined lyotropic liquid crystal (potassium laurate-decanol-water, KL-DeOH-H2O) (or LLC) were synthesized. The hydrogels were characterized by polarized optical microscopy (POM), refractometry, optical transmission, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS). Besides these techniques, the hydrophilicity of hydrogels was characterized by the degree of swelling. Based on POM, it was observed that the texture of the birefringent hydrogels obtained depends on their cross-linking density, and that it is formed soon after hydrogel synthesis. Refractometry results indicated an behavior antagonist to that obtained for the system constituted by thermotropic liquid crystal inserted into the PAAm lattice in relation to the dependence of Δn on the AAm concentration and the optical transmittance. SEM micrographs show that birefringent hydrogels present rougher surface when compared to the surface of PAAm hydrogels. For the same AAm concentrations, it was observed that the hydrogels with confined LLC present larger swelling values (Q) when compared to those of PAAm hydrogels. The loss of water by birefringent hydrogels is twofold slower than that of PAAm hydrogels. Hydrogels formed by PAAm and lyotropic liquid crystal synthesized in this work can be potentially used in optical devices. 相似文献

Energy-dispersive x-ray fluorescence is advantageous for trace analysis of soils present as thin films. A target thickness of about 2 mg cm-2 provides a compromise between optimal sensitivity and minimal absorption effect or optimal accuracy. Sample preparation involves only suspending the finely ground soil in water and drying this suspension on a thin mylar foil glued on a ring that fits into the x.r.f. spectrometer. The “effective sample weight” present in the exciting beam area is computed from the scatter peaks, a method that cancels out target heterogeneity problems. High accuracy is demonstrated for many elements in reference soil and rock materials; a precision around 5% and a detection limit around 10 ppm can be achieved. As an illustration, results for 16 trace elements and preliminary interpretation are given for a series of pedologically important soil samples from Brasil. 相似文献

Charges in cold, multiple-species, non-neutral plasmas separate radially by mass, forming centrifugally separated states. Here, we report the first detailed measurements of such states in an electron-antiproton plasma, and the first observations of the separation dynamics in any centrifugally separated system. While the observed equilibrium states are expected and in agreement with theory, the equilibration time is approximately constant over a wide range of parameters, a surprising and as yet unexplained result. Ovarian cancer (OC) is the most lethal gynecologic malignancy, and melatonin has shown various antitumor properties. Herein, we investigated the influence of melatonin therapy on energy metabolism and mitochondrial integrity in SKOV-3 cells and tested whether its effects depended on MT1 receptor activation. SKOV-3 cells were exposed to different melatonin concentrations, and experimental groups were divided as to the presence of MT1 receptors (melatonin groups) or receptor absence by RNAi silencing (siRNA MT1+melatonin). Intracellular melatonin levels increased after treatment with melatonin independent of the MT1. The mitochondrial membrane potential of SKOV-3 cells decreased in the group treated with the highest melatonin concentration. Melatonin reduced cellular glucose consumption, while MT1 knockdown increased its consumption. Interconversion of lactate to pyruvate increased after treatment with melatonin and was remarkable in siRNA MT1 groups. Moreover, lactate dehydrogenase activity decreased with melatonin and increased after MT1 silencing at all concentrations. The UCSC XenaBrowser tool showed a positive correlation between the human ASMTL gene and the ATP synthase genes, succinate dehydrogenase gene (SDHD), and pyruvate dehydrogenase genes (PDHA and PDHB). We conclude that melatonin changes the glycolytic phenotype and mitochondrial integrity of SKOV-3 cells independent of the MT1 receptor, thus decreasing the survival advantage of OC cells. 相似文献
