CePt3Si is a novel heavy fermion superconductor, crystallizing in the CePt3B structure as a tetragonally distorted low symmetry variant of the AuCu3 structure type. CePt3Si exhibits antiferromagnetic order at T(N) approximately 2.2 K and enters into a heavy fermion superconducting state at T(c) approximately 0.75 K. Large values of H(')(c2) approximately -8.5 T/K and H(c2)(0) approximately 5 T refer to heavy quasiparticles forming Cooper pairs. We investigate the Mott transitions in two-band Hubbard models with different bandwidths. Applying dynamical mean field theory, we discuss the stability of itinerant quasiparticle states in each band. We demonstrate that separate Mott transitions occur at different Coulomb interaction strengths in general, which merge to a single transition only under special conditions. We apply the slave-boson approach of Kotliar and Ruckenstein to the two-band Hubbard model with an Ising like Hund's rule
coupling and bands of different widths. On the mean-field level of this approach we investigate the Mott transition and observe
both separate and joint transitions of the
two bands depending on the choice of the inter- and intra-orbital Coulomb interaction parameters. The mean-field calculations
allow for a simple physical interpretation and can confirm several aspects of previous work. Beside the case of two individually
half-filled bands we also examine what
happens if the original metallic bands possess fractional filling either due to finite doping or due to a crystal field which
relatively shifts the atomic energy levels of the two orbitals. For appropriate values of the interaction and of the crystal
field we can observe a band insulating

We present a compact mid-infrared laser spectrometer for trace-gas monitoring. Difference frequency generation in periodically poled LiNbO(3) is used as laser source, yielding a tuning range 3.2-3.7mum at a linewidth of 154 MHz. The relatively high average power of 3 to 5 mW favors detection with a small resonant photoacoustic gas cell. The contrasting ground states of isoelectronic, isostructural FeSi and FeGe are explained within an extended local density approximation scheme (LDA+U) by an appropriate choice of the Coulomb repulsion U on the Fe sites. A minimal two-band model with interband interactions leads to a phase diagram for the alloys FeSi1-xGex. A mean field approximation gives a first-order transition between a small gap semiconductor and a ferromagnetic metal as a function of magnetic field, temperature, and concentration x. Unusually the transition from metal to insulator is driven by broadening, not narrowing, the bands and it is the metallic state that shows magnetic order. 相似文献
