Deterministic lot-sizing for coordinated families of production/inventory items

Coordination of order placing points, in a multi-item environment, becomes desirable as it reduces the set-up costs and eases the problem of order-control implementation. Because of the computational complexities most of the analysis in the literature is confined to single families of items. In this paper, we establish the basic property of item consecutiveness for the multi-family situation which facilitates a shortest-path formulation of optimal families. We also develop an efficient algorithm for lot size computations of a single family to be incorporated in the shortest-path model.     

Synthetic applications of 2-chloro-3-formylquinoline

New examples of synthetic applications of 2-chloro-3-formylquinoline, as evident from the novel and facile syntheses of 3-aminoisooxazolo[5,4-b]quinoline (4), 3-hydroxyfuro[2,3-d]theino[2,3-b]quinoline-2-carboxamide (7) and 3-hydroxymethyl-2-(3-formyl)phenylquinoline ( 13 ), have been furnished.     

TiCl(4)-promoted Baylis-Hillman reactions of substituted 5-isoxazolecarboxaldehydes with cycloalkenones)

The Baylis-Hillman (BH) reaction of substituted 5-isoxazolecarboxaldehydes with cyclohexenone in the presence of TiCl(4) invariably lead to the formation of hemiacetals beside the BH adducts. A similar reaction in the presence of DABCO, DBU, or 3-HQN yielded minor quantities of phenols in addition to the usual BH adducts. Similar to 5-isoxazolecarboxaldehydes, the TiCl(4)-mediated BH reaction of cyclohexenone with various benzaldehydes also furnishes hemiacetals in considerable yields. The reaction mechanism involving the formation of alpha-chloromethyl enone as an intermediate has been proposed. The synthesis of hemiacetals 5 and 14 from compound 4 in the presence of cyclohexenone and cyclopentenone, respectively, under acidic conditions indicates that enolization and aromatization of the cyclohexene ring are the key steps in the reaction mechanism.     

An explicit/implicit Galerkin domain decomposition procedure for parabolic integro-differential equations

In this paper, a two-dimensional fractional advection-dispersion equation (2D-FADE) with variable coefficients on a finite domain is considered. We use a new technique of combination of the Alternating Directions Implicit-Euler method (ADI-Euler), the unshifted Grünwald formula for the advection term, the right-shifted Grünwald formula for the diffusion term, and a Richardson extrapolation to establish an unconditionally stable second order accurate difference method. Stability, consistency and convergence of the ADI-Euler method for 2D-FADE are examined. A numerical example with known exact solution is also presented, and the behavior of the error is analyzed to verify the order of convergence of the ADI-Euler method and the extrapolated ADI-Euler method.

Studies on the nef reaction induced by organic bases

Studies of the Nef reaction in the presence of primary, secondary and tertiary amines have been described. A convenient synthesis of N-substituted pyrroles and 3,6-dimethyl-4-hydrazinocarbonyl-5-(4-amino-3-nitrophenyl)-pyridazine 16 has been developed.     

Mixed finite element method for a strongly damped wave equation

A mixed finite element Galerkin method is analyzed for a strongly damped wave equation. Optimal error estimates in L²‐norm for the velocity and stress are derived using usual energy argument, while those for displacement are based on the nonstandard energy formulation of Baker. Both a semi‐discrete scheme and a second‐order implicit‐time discretization method are discussed, and it is shown that the results are valid for all t > 0. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Telecom service provider portal: Revenue sharing and outsourcing

Early mobile phones only provided voice transmission, for a fee. They have now evolved into voice and online data portals for providing additional services through 3rd party vendors. These service providers (vendors) are given access to a customer base “owned” by the mobile phone companies, for a fee. Typically customers make two payments: to the mobile phone company for phone services and to the 3rd party vendors for specific services bought from them. Variations to the above business model may involve outsourcing the online portal and/or acquiring customers from other independent portals. For these scenarios, we study how the fees for phone service and customer access are established and how they may relate to the prices of vendor services, and which services should be located on the portal - all in a game-theoretic context. Our results prove that it is possible to reorganize revenue flows through an invoicing process that may benefit the mobile network operator more than the other parties. In addition, we establish optimality in terms of the number of vendors on the portal, and determine a rank-ordering of vendors for their inclusion into the portal.     

A Robin-type non-overlapping domain decomposition procedure for second order elliptic problems

This article deals with the analysis of an iterative non-overlapping domain decomposition (DD) method for elliptic problems, using Robin-type boundary condition on the inter-subdomain boundaries, which can be solved in parallel with local communications. The proposed iterative method allows us to relax the continuity condition for Lagrange multipliers on the inter-subdomain boundaries. In order to derive the corresponding discrete problem, we apply a non-conforming Galerkin method using lowest order Crouzeix–Raviart elements. The convergence of the iterative scheme is obtained by proving that the spectral radius of the matrix associated with the fixed point iterations is less than 1. Parallel computations have been carried out and the numerical experiments confirm the theoretical results established in this paper.
