Metal and Substituent Influence on the Cytostatic Activity of Cationic Bis-cyclometallated Iridium and Rhodium Complexes with Substituted 1,10-Phenanthrolines as Ancillary Ligands

Synthesis and characterization of the new cyclometalated complex salts [Rh(ptpy)₂(5.6-dimethyl-1,10-phenanthroline)]PF₆ ( 1a ) [Rh(ptpy)₂(2.9-dimethyl-4.7-diphenyl-1,10- phenanthroline)]PF₆ ( 2a ), [Rh(ptpy)₂(5-amino-1,10-phenanthroline)] PF₆ ( 3a ), and [M(ptpy)₂ (pyrazino-[2.3-f]-1,10-phenanthroline)]PF₆ (M = Rh, 4a ; M = Ir, 4b ), (ptpy = 2-(p-tolyl)pyridinato) are described. The molecular structures of compounds 1b and 4a in the solid state were determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. All these compounds and their already known Iridium counterparts 1b – 3b display significant cytotoxicity against human cancer cell lines MCF-7 (human breast adenocarcinoma) and HT-29 (colon adenocarcinoma) with IC₅₀ values in the low micromolar range.     

Pullback Attracting Inertial Manifolds for Nonautonomous Dynamical Systems

In this paper we present an abstract approach to inertial manifolds for nonautonomous dynamical systems. Our result on the existence of inertial manifolds requires only two geometrical assumptions, called cone invariance and squeezing property, and two additional technical assumptions, called boundedness and coercivity property. Moreover we give conditions which ensure that the global pullback attractor is contained in the inertial manifold. In the second part of the paper we consider special nonautonomous dynamical systems, namely processes (or two-parameter semi-flows). As a first application of our abstract approach and for reason of comparison with known results we verify the assumptions for semilinear nonautonomous evolution equations whose linear part satisfies an exponential dichotomy condition and whose nonlinear part is globally bounded and globally Lipschitz.

Level- and line-crossing in forward scattering and selective reflection in a transverse magnetic field

LC-experiments in forward scattering and selective reflection are mostly performed in a longitudinal magnetic field. We have extended the investigations to a transverse field receiving the following results. The zerofield level- and line-crossing shows a different shape. From the line-crossing the isotope shift between Hg 200 and 202 was determined and the applicability of this method discussed. A narrowing of the width of the level-crossing in selective reflection was observed at low pressure.

Patient self-testing and self-management of oral anticoagulation

The development of portable instruments for measuring the prothrombin time (PT) in capillary whole blood has made it possible for patients on lifelong coumarin therapy to monitor the effect of the anticoagulant themselves (patient self-testing) and to adjust the dosage if necessary on their own (patient self-management). Dosage variations between individual patients and the narrow therapeutic range of the anticoagulant account for the need to monitor its effect, in order to minimize the risk of thromboembolism resulting from inadequate anticoagulation as well as the risk of bleeding due to overanticoagulation. This review focuses on the prerequisites for the successful implementation of patient self-testing and self-management, such as the selection of eligible patients, appropriate training and the reliability of available instruments. The outcomes of relevant clinical studies involving patient self-testing and self-management are also discussed.
