Measurement of γp→K + Λ and γp→K + Σ 0 at photon energies up to 1.47 GeV

The reactions pK ⁺ and pK ^{+ 0} have been measured with the multiparticle detector system SAPHIR at ELSA in Bonn. Besides the differential cross sections the polarization and, for the first time, the ⁰ polarization have been determined in a photon induced reaction. All data are presented as functions of the photon energy (from threshold up to 1.47 GeV) and of the kaon production angle (0°–180°). The polarization of both and ⁰ is substantial at all energies and varies strongly with the production angle.This work is supported by the Bundesminister für Forschung und Technologie (BMFT), FK 06 BN 621 I     

Reexamination of the I2 spectrum near the B(3Π0u+) state dissociation limit

The disagreement of Danyluk and King's (Chem. Phys.25, 343 (1977)) rotational constants for levels lying near the dissociation limit of B-state I₂ with the mechanical behavior predicted by near-dissociation theory is investigated. The discrepancies are shown to be much too large to be explained by either the neglect of centrifugal distortion effects in the original analysis or by rotational or spin-rotation coupling to a nearby repulsive 1_u state. These differences are therefore attributed to experimental error, a conclusion which is confirmed by more recent experimental results. A reanalysis of the best available data for levels near the dissociation limit of B-state I₂ then yields improved values for the B-state dissociation limit $\text{D}$ = 20 043.16 (±0.02) cm^?1 of the vibrational index at dissociation v_$\text{D}$ = 87.32 (±0.04) and of the long-range potential constant $\text{C}{}_5\text{= 2.88 (±0.03) × 10}{}^5\text{cm}{}^{\mathrm{?1}}\text{A}\text{?}{}^5$. This in turn implies a slightly improved ground-state dissociation energy of $\text{D}$₀ = 12 440.18 (±0.02) cm^?1.     

On characterizing collections arising from N-gons in the plane

Consider a labeled convex n-gon in the plane and a point x in general position in the interior. We associate with this a collection (x) of 3-element sets, namely those 3-element subsets of the vertices which contain x in their interior. We investigate the problem of characterizing those collections of subsets which can be represented in this matter. On linear congruence relations for Kubota-Leopoldt 2-adic L-functions

Our purpose in the paper is to find the most general linear congruence relation of the Hardy-Williams type for linear combinations of special values of Kubota-Leopoldt 2-adic L-functions L₂(k,χω^1−k) with k running over any finite subset of not necessarily consisting of consecutive integers (see Acta Arith. 47 (1986) 263; Publ. Math. Fac. Sci. Besançon, Théorie des Nombres, 1995/1996; Publ. Math. Debrecen 56 (2000) 677 and cf. Mathematics and Its Applications, Vol. 511, Kluwer Academic Publishers, Dordrecht, Boston, London, 2000). If k runs over finite subsets of consisting of consecutive integers see Compositio Math. 111 (1998) 289; Publ. Math. Debrecen 56 (2000) 677; Hardy and Williams, 1986; Compositio Math. 75 (1990) 271; Acta Arith. 71 (1995) 273; 52 (1989) 147; J. Number Theory 34 (1990) 362. In order to obtain the most general congruences of this type we make use of divisibility properties of the generalized Vandermonde determinants obtained in Spie? et al. (Divisibility properties of generalized Vandermonde and Cauchy determinants, Preprint 627, Institute of Mathematics, Polish Academy of Sciences, Warsaw, 2002). This allows us to simplify our main Theorem 2 and obtain Theorem 3 where the most general form of the linear congruence relation is given.     

Intersection Cohomology on Nonrational Polytopes⋆

We consider a fan as a ringed space (with finitely many points). We develop the corresponding sheaf theory and functors, such as direct image R_* ( is a subdivision of a fan), Verdier duality, etc. The distinguished sheaf , called the minimal sheaf plays the role of an equivariant intersection cohomology complex on the corresponding toric variety (which exists if is rational). Using we define the intersection cohomology space IH(). It is conjectured that a strictly convex piecewise linear function on acts as a Lefschetz operator on IH(). We show that this conjecture implies Stanley's conjecture on the unimodality of the generalized h-vector of a convex polytope.
