Dependence of aerodynamic characteristics and flow pattern on surface structure of a baseball

In this report, the aerodynamic characteristics, such as lift and drag, of an official rubber baseball are studied experimentally by comparing the characteristics of a sphere having a smooth surface and those of spheres having different surface structures. In addition, the flow velocity distribution is measured quantitatively using the spark tracing method. From the obtained results, the flow patterns for these baseballs and the flow mechanism around a sphere have been clarified.

Dimensional stability of regenerated cellulose film in relation to orientations of crystalline and noncrystalline phases

The dimensional stability of regenerated cellulose film on swelling with water is discussed in relation to the biaxial orientation of the two kinds of structural units, cellulose II crystallites and noncrystalline chain segments, and their anisotropic swelling (anisotropic absorption of water). Considerable dimensional stability in the plane of the film but enormous instability of thickness on swelling in water of some commercial cellophanes is qualitatively interpreted in terms of the planar orientation of crystal (101) planes along the film surface and the orientation of the noncrystalline chain segments parallel to the film surface. The dimensional changes on swelling from the completely dry state to 10% moisture regain were further interpreted quantitatively in terms of the degrees of biaxial orientation of the two kinds of structural units and their degrees of anisotropic swelling by modifying the Hermans monophase model for crystalline and noncrystalline biphase structures. The following degrees of anisotropic swelling of the structural units were thus obtained: q_{c, [101]} = 0.40%, q_{c, [101 ]} = ?0.33%, and q_a = 2.42%.     

Angle-resolved photoemission study of CoSi2 nanofilms grown on Si(111) substrates

We have carried out an angle-resolved photoemission study for CoSi₂ nanofilms grown on the Si(111)-7×7 substrates. The surface of CoSi₂(111) nanofilm changes from the bulk-truncated surface to the surface with additional Si-bilayer by annealing at higher temperature above 825 K. The angle-resolved photoemission spectra of the CoSi₂ nanofilm annealed at 853 K show the spectral features originated from the surface resonance state on the CoSi₂ surface terminated by Si-bilayer. From the detailed photoemission study, we discuss the surface electronic structure in CoSi₂(111) nanofilms grown on Si(111) substrates.     

Photoelectron spectra and sum rule consideration: Effect of chlorine substitution on ionization energies for chloroethanes,chloroacetaldehydes and chloroacetyl chlorides

He(I) photoelectron spectra are reported for various series of chlorine-substituted compounds: (a) CH₃CH_3?mCl_m, (b) CH_3?mCl_mCCl₃, (c) CH_3?mCl_mCHO and (d) CH_3?mCl_mCOCl, where m = 1, 2 and 3. In each series it is shown that the total sum of vertical ionization energies over all p-type localized molecular orbitals (LO's) has an excellent linear relationship to the number of substituted chlorine atoms. The differences in the total orbital energy sum by successive chlorine substitutions are found to be 26.7 eV for series a and b and 27.2 eV for series c and d, yielding the corresponding experimental σ_CCl, energies useful for sum rule considerations. The photoelectron spectra of the chloro compounds studied are interpreted with the help of the sum rule as well as CNDO/2 calculations. Orbital correlation diagrams have been constructed for these compounds.     

Crystal orientation in a semicrystalline polymer in relation to deformation of polymer spherulites. IV. Crystal orientation mechanism of nylon-6 under uniaxial stretching

A model relating crystal orientation to the deformation of nylon-6 spherulites under uniaxial stretching is discussed in terms of the orientation distribution functions of reciprocal lattice vectors of crystal planes, such as the (002) and (200) planes. The distribution functions calculated from the model are compared with those obtained from x-ray diffraction experiments. It is found that the crystal a axis and, consequently, the direction of hydrogen bonds within the crystal (α modification) orient parallel to the lamellar axis in the undeformed state, and that the crystal orientation behavior of nylon-6 is much different from that of low-density polyethylene, being characterized by much smaller values of the reorientation parameters of crystallites within orienting lamellae. Moreover, small-angle light scattering for H_v and V_v polarization is also calculated on the basis of the spherulite deformation model by taking the nylon-6 crystal as having orthogonal–biaxial symmetry in optical anisotropy. It is concluded that the H_v scattering can be realized in terms of the proposed model for spherulite deformation by taking into account a considerable contribution of hydrogen bonds to the molecular polarizability, so as to make the polarizability along the crystal a axis larger than that along the b axis. In other words, this conclusion suggests positively birefringent spherulites in the nylon-6 samples studied.     

Synthesis of perfluorobicyclic ethers

The electrochemical fluorination of cycloalkyl-substituted acetic and propionic acids were conducted to obtain several kinds of perfluorobicyclic ethers [reaction conditions: Anodic current density: 3.5 A/dm², Volt: 5～8V, Temp: 5～6 °C] . For example, from cyclopentyl-substituted acetic acids, perfluoro(4-alkyl-2-oxabicyclo[3.3.0]octane)s (I) were formed as the cyclization products in yields of 10～19% together with the corresponding perflouroalkanoyl flourides (II) (Y=3～13%).

While, perfluorospiro-ethers were obtained from the fluorination of 3-cycloalkyl-substituted propionic acids. The characterization of these perfluorobicyclic ethers which consists of the reaction with anhydrous aluminum chloride will be reported also.
