Radical cyclization in heterocycle synthesis. 11.(1) A novel synthesis of alpha,beta-disubstituted gamma-lactones via sulfanyl radical addition-cyclization using hydroximates as a tether

A combination of sulfanyl radical addition-cyclization of dienes connected with hydroximates and subsequent conversion of the resulting cyclic hydroximate to the lactones provides a novel method for the construction of alpha,beta-disubstituted gamma-lactones. Upon treatment with thiophenol in the presence of AIBN, dienes connected with hydroximates smoothly underwent sulfanyl radical addition-cyclization to give cyclic cis- and trans-hydroximates. Hydrolysis of cyclic hydroximates gave the desired cis- and trans-lactones in high yield. This method was successfully applied to the practical synthesis of (+/-)-oxo-parabenzlactone.     

Gas-phase reactions of organic radicals and diradicals with ions

Reactions of polyatomic organic radicals with gas phase ions have been studied at thermal energy using a flowing afterglow-selected ion flow tube (FA-SIFT) instrument. A supersonic pyrolysis nozzle produces allyl radical (CH2CHCH2) and ortho-benzyne diradical (o-C6H4) for reaction with ions. We have observed: [CH2CHCH2 + H3O+ --> C3H6+ + H2O], [CH2CHCH2 + HO- --> no ion products], [o-C6H4 + H3O+ --> C6H5+ + H2O], and [o-C6H4 + HO- --> C6H3- + H2O]. The proton transfer reactions with H3O+ occur at nearly every collision (kII approximately with 10(-9) cm3 s(-1)). The exothermic proton abstraction for o-C6H4 + HO- is unexpectedly slow (kII approximately with 10(-10) cm3 s(-1)). This has been rationalized by competing associative detachment: o-C6H4 + HO- --> C6H5O + e-. The allyl + HO- reaction proceeds presumably via similar detachment pathways.

Nigellamines A3, A4, A5, and C, new dolabellane-type diterpene alkaloids, with lipid metabolism-promoting activities from the Egyptian medicinal food black cumin

New dolabellane-type diterpene alkaloids, nigellamines A(3), A(4), A(5), and C, were isolated from the methanolic extract of an Egyptian medicinal food, black cumin (the seeds of Nigella sativa). Their absolute configurations were determined on the basis of chemical and physicochemical evidence. Nigellamines were found to lower triglyceride levels in primary cultured mouse hepatocytes, and in particular, the activity of nigellamine A(5) was equivalent to that of the hypolipidemic agent, clofibrate.     

Epitaxial electrodeposition of Prussian blue thin films on single-crystal Au(110)

Epitaxial Prussian blue (PB) films are deposited electrochemically onto a Au(110) substrate. High-resolution X-ray diffraction shows that the PB films have a [111] out-of-plane orientation. The very large lattice mismatch of 148% is reduced to about 1% by the formation of (1 x 2)PB(111)[onemacr;10]//(6 x 5)Au(110)[onemacr;10] and (1 x 2)PB(111)[01onemacr;]//(6 x 5)Au(110)[onemacr;10] epitaxial relationships. Peaks in the cyclic voltammogram of PB on Au(110) are sharper than those on polycrystalline Au, consistent with higher structural order and a single out-of-plane orientation. The development of epitaxial films of PB and PB analogues will allow the measurement of the orientation-dependent properties of these molecular magnets. It will also open the door to the development of novel molecular spintronic devices, such as those which exhibit spin-dependent electron transfer.     

Plaunol A and B,new anti-ulcer diterpenelactones from Crotonsublyratus

Two new diterpenelactones named plaunol A ($\text{2}$) and B ($\text{3}$) exhibiting anti-Shay ulcer activity were isolated from Thai medicinal plant, $\text{Croton}$$\text{sublyratus}$. Structure of $\text{2}$ was determined by X-ray analysis of its $\text{p}$-bromobenzoate and structure of $\text{3}$ was deduced from the results of chemical correlation and the spectral data.     

Non-C2-symmetrical antimony-phosphorus ligand, (R/S)-2-diphenylphosphano-2′-di(p-tolyl)stibano-1,1′-binaphthyl (BINAPSb): preparation and its use for asymmetric reactions as a chiral auxiliary

A new non-C₂-symmetrical antimony-phosphorous ligand, (±)-2-diphenyl-phosphano-2′-di(p-tolyl)stibano-1,1′-binaphthyl (BINAPSb) 3, has been prepared from 2-bromo-2′-diphenylphosphano-1,1′-naphthyl 4 via its borane complex 6, and could be resolved by the separation of a mixture of the diastereomeric palladium complexes 8A and 8B derived from the reaction of (±)-3 with optically active palladium reagent (S)-7. The enantiomerically pure BINAPSb 3 has proved to be highly effective in the palladium-catalyzed asymmetric hydrosilylation of styrene as a chiral auxiliary.     

Synthesis of the enantiomers of cis-2-methyl-5-hexanolide,the major component of the sex pheromone of the carpenter bee

(2R,5S)-2-Methyl-5-hexanolide and its antipode were synthesized in highly optically pure state (?98–99% e.e.) starting from ethyl (S)-lactate and the enantiomers of methyl β-hydroxyisobutyrate. The specific rotations of our samples were [α]_D±91.0-93.5° (CHCl₃), while the reported values of the samples prepared by resolution or asymmetric synthesis were ±64.5–65.6°.     

Magnetic circular dichroism and anomalous fluorescence spectra of [2,2] (2,6)azulenophanes

The electronic absorption spectra of syn-[2,2] (2,6) azulenophane (1) and anti-[2,2] (2,6)azulenophane (2) were investigated via magnetic circular dichroism spectra. The anomalous fluorescence spectra were also observed. From the assignment of the absorption spectra, it was concluded that molecules 1 and 2 emitted the fluorescence from the third excited singlet state.
