Molecular mechanisms of crystallization and defect formation

Using the atomic force microscope (AFM) in situ during the crystallization of the protein apoferritin, we show that for this system the kink density along the steps is an equilibrium property that, multiplied by the frequency of molecular attachment, fully determines the propagation of growth steps. The intermolecular bond energy is 3.2k(B)T. Point defects are nonequilibrial and are caused by incorporation of impurity molecules, and replicate in subsequent layers due to the strain they cause. Using single-molecule manipulation with the AFM tip, the defects can be healed to restore the regular lattice.     

Double phase conjugation with orthogonally polarized beams in a BaTiO(3) crystal

We have demonstrated experimentally the simultaneous self-conjugation of extraordinarily and ordinarily polarized light waves (lambda=514 nm), with the polarization state preserved, in a Ce:BaTiO(3) crystal. Conjugate o waves originate from coupling between o and e waves by means of a circular photogalvanic effect. The conjugator also takes advantage of the Ce:BaTiO(3) crystal, for which it is easy to generate an extraordinary conjugate beam by photorefractive backscattering. This beam of light is necessary for double phase conjugation.     

The existence of a black hole due to condensation of matter

When enough matter is condensed in a small region, gravitational effects will be strong enough to cause collapse and a black hole will be formed. We formulate and prove here such a statement in the language of general relativity. (This is Theorem 2 of this paper.)     

Positivity of quasilocal mass

Motivated by the important work of Brown and York on quasilocal energy, we propose definitions of quasilocal energy and momentum surface energy of a spacelike 2-surface with a positive intrinsic curvature in a spacetime. We show that the quasilocal energy of the boundary of a compact spacelike hypersurface which satisfies the local energy condition is strictly positive unless the spacetime is flat along the spacelike hypersurface.     

Explicit solution of a Kolmogorov equation

Ever since the technique of the Kalman-Bucy filter was popularized, there has been an intense interest in finding new classes of finite-dimensional recursive filters. In the late seventies, the concept of the estimation algebra of a filtering system was introduced. It has been the major tool in studying the Duncan-Mortensen-Zakai equation. Recently the second author has constructed general finite-dimensional filters which contain both Kalman-Bucy filters and Benes filter as special cases. In this paper we consider a filtering system with arbitrary nonlinear driftf(x) which satisfies some regularity assumption at infinity. This is a natural assumption in view of Theorem 10 of [DTWY] in a special case. Under the assumption on the observation h(x)=constant, we propose writing down the solution of the Duncan-Mortensen-Zakai equation explicitly.This research was supported by Army Grant DAAH-04-93G-0006.
