Binary mixtures were prepared from an azobenzene derivative and a liquid-crystal (LC) compound that exhibits smectic?C (SmC) and bicontinuous cubic (Cub(bi)) LC phases. Reversible switching between the two phases in response to UV-light irradiation was observed. This light-driven SmC-to-Cub(bi) transition is the first example showing the increased dimensionality of molecular ordering with isomerization of azobenzenes (see figure).  相似文献

We have synthesized and characterized homogeneous solid-solution alloy nanoparticles of Pd and Rh, which are immiscible with each other in the equilibrium bulk state at around room temperature. The Pd-Rh alloy nanoparticles can absorb hydrogen at ambient pressure and the hydrogen pressure of Pd-Rh alloys for hydrogen storage is dramatically decreased by more than 4 orders of magnitude from the corresponding pressure in the metastable bulk state. The solid-solution state is still maintained in the nanoparticles even after hydrogen absorption/desorption, in contrast to the metastable bulks which are separated into Pd and Rh during the process.  相似文献

Let M be a map on a surface F 2. A geometric realization of M is an embedding of F 2 into a Euclidian 3-space ℝ3 with no self-intersection such that each face of M is a flat polygon. In Bonnington and Nakamoto (Discrete Comput. Geom. 40:141–157, 2008), it has been proved that every triangulation G on the projective plane has a face f such that the triangulation Gf on the M?bius band obtained from G by removing the interior of f has a geometric realization. A recent intriguing finding that a helical network arrangement forms the bicontinuous cubic phase is attracting great attention for the possibility of new routes to asymmetric synthesis by achiral molecules. However, the design of the molecular structure for the cubic phase is still unrevealed. In this work, a nonsymmetric core molecule with larger naphthalene and smaller benzene moieties at each side of the central linkage and the same disiloxanyldecyloxy terminal at both terminals is shown to be the first example of molecule forming both single-layered and double-layered core assembly modes in the Ia3d phase as a single molecule system. The molecule forms the former mode at high temperatures as a thermodynamically stable phase, similarly to the symmetric naphthalene core system, whereas, on cooling below a temperature (∼350 K), a metastable Ia3d phase forms a double-layered core state down to room temperature, which is common to the benzene core system. As another effect of the nonsymmetric core, the cubic phase is maintained at room temperature for more than 100 days with slight distortion. Infrared spectral studies and quantum chemical calculations suggested the easy transformation between the two core assembly modes. The core nonsymmetry can be a versatile fine-tuning of the core assembly mode and phase stability for the cubic phase molecules.  相似文献

The gauge fixing problem in the conformal (spinor and scalar) QED is examined. For the analysis, we generalize Dirac's manifestly conformal-covariant formalism. It is shown that the (vector and matter) fields must obey a certain mixed (conformal and gauge) type of transformation law in order to fix the local gauge symmetry preserving the conformal invariance in the Lagrangian.  相似文献

The use of electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS) in negative ion mode was investigated as a direct probe for identifying Al species in Al-accumulating hydrangea (Hydrangea macrophylla) samples. Cell sap solutions of hydrangea leaves were purified using Sephadex G-10 liquid chromatography and each fraction was analyzed using ESI-MS and ESI-MS/MS to identify Al species. In hydrangea leaves, a 1:1 Al-citrate complex was found as [AlH(-1)cit](-) (m/z 215), where H(3)cit denotes citric acid. This result is consistent with that of Ma et al. who used (27)Al-NMR.  相似文献
