Chiral exciplex dyes showing circularly polarized luminescence: extension of the excimer chirality rule

A series of axially chiral binaphthyls and quaternaphthyls possessing two kinds of aromatic fluorophores, such as pyrenyl, perylenyl, and 4-(dimethylamino)phenyl groups, arranged alternately were synthesized by a divergent method. In the excited state, the fluorophores selectively formed a unidirectionally twisted exciplex (excited heterodimer) by a cumulative steric effect and exhibited circularly polarized luminescence (CPL). They are the first examples of a monomolecular exciplex CPL dye. This versatile method for producing exciplex CPL dyes also improved fluorescence intensity, and the CPL properties were not very sensitive to the solvent or to the temperature owing to the conformationally rigid exciplex. This systematic study allowed us to confirm that the excimer chirality rule can be applied to the exciplex dyes: left- and right-handed exciplexes with a twist angle of less than 90° exhibit (−)- and (+)-CPL, respectively.

New parameters of subsets in polynomial association schemes

We define new parameters, a zero interval and a dual zero interval, of subsets in P- or Q-polynomial association schemes. A zero interval of a subset in a P-polynomial association scheme is a successive interval index for which the inner distribution vanishes, and a dual zero interval of a subset in a Q-polynomial association scheme is a successive interval index for which the dual inner distribution vanishes. We derive bounds of the lengths of a zero interval and a dual zero interval using the degree and dual degree respectively, and show that a subset in a P-polynomial association scheme (resp. a Q-polynomial association scheme) having a large length of a zero interval (resp. a dual zero interval) induces a completely regular code (resp. a Q-polynomial association scheme). Moreover, we consider the spherical analogue of a dual zero interval.     

Synthesis and characterization of novel dipyridylbenzothiadiazole and bisbenzothiadiazole derivatives

Novel dipyridyl compounds containing a mono- and bisbenzothiadiazole unit were synthesized using the Stille coupling reaction. Their pyridinium salts, viologen analogues, were also prepared by the N-alkylation. The X-ray crystallographic analysis of the compounds containing a benzothiadiazole ring revealed nonplanar molecular structures and unique crystal structures depending on the nitrogen positions. The dipyridyl compounds are efficient fluorophores with high electron affinity. The derivative afforded complexes with chloranilic acid and cyanuric acid composed of hydrogen bonding networks. The methyl viologen analogues showed two-stage one-electron reduction waves.     

One-year Ocular Safety Observation of Workers and Estimations of Microorganism Inactivation Efficacy in the Room Irradiated with 222-nm Far Ultraviolet-C Lamps

Two krypton-chloride germicidal excimer lamp units (Care222 TRT-104C11-UI-U3, USHIO Inc.) were installed in the examination room of an ophthalmology department. The irradiation dose was set not to exceed the former (i.e., before 2022) threshold limit value (TLV) (22 mJ cm⁻²/8 h) recommended by the ACGIH. Section 1: The eyes and lids of the six ophthalmologists (5 wore glasses for myopic correction) who worked in the room for a mean stay of 6.7 h week⁻¹ were prospectively observed for 12 months. Slitlamp examinations revealed neither acute adverse events such as corneal erosion, conjunctival hyperemia, and lid skin erythema nor chronic adverse events such as pterygium, cataract, or lid tumor. The visual acuity, refractive error, and corneal endothelial cell density remained unchanged during the study. Section 2: The irradiation of samples placed on the table or floor using the same fixtures in the room (5–7.5 mJ cm⁻²) was associated with >99% inhibition of φX174 phage and >90% inhibition of Staphylococcus aureus. In conclusion, no acute or chronic health effects in human participants was observed in a clinical setting of full-room ultraviolet germicidal irradiation by 222-nm lamp units, and high efficacy in deactivation of microorganisms was determined in the same setting.
