Absorption Spectra of Planarian Visual Pigments and Two States of the Metarhodopsin Intermediates

Abstract— Absorption spectra measurements of isolated planarian ocelli by a microspectrophotometer (MSP) and intra-ocellar recordings of the early receptor potential (ERP) were carried out in order to characterize in situ planarian rhodopsin (pRh) and its photoproducts. The MSP spectra of the isolated ocelli revealed Λ_max at about 500 nm. The ERP evoked by a test stimulus was a positive monophasic waveform in the dark but became negative during exposure to violet light. During subsequent darkness, the ERP rapidly reverted to a positive waveform but with a smaller amplitude than before exposure. The ERP amplitude recovered to its initial level upon exposure to red light. The ERP experiments suggest that pRh produces two metarhodopsin intermediates, with Λ_max longer than that of pRh: the metastate responsible for the negative ERP converts to another metastate that results in a smaller ERP in the dark-adapted ocellus.     

Double photoexcitation of helium in a strong dc electric field

We report the first experimental measurements of the effect of an applied field on the photoexcitation and autoionization of doubly excited states of helium. Ground-state photoionization spectra have been measured in the region below the He+(N=2) threshold with static electric fields of up to 84.4 kV/cm across the interaction region. The results are compared to the theoretical calculations of Chung et al. [J. Phys. B 34, 165 (2001)]], which are the only calculations available in this regime. Transitions to several states in the N=2, n=6 manifold are assigned, and a wealth of new structure is observed. Our data show that many more series are mixed in by the field than those predicted by theory.     

Two-photon spectroscopy of core excitons in barium fluoride using synchrotron radiation and laser light

We have conducted two-photon spectroscopy of core excitons in BaF(2). Synchrotron radiation and laser light were used for 5p core-electron excitation and Auger-free luminescence was detected as the signal. Two-photon excitation enables access to f and p orbitals that cannot be reached by one-photon excitation of electrons in p orbitals. It has been found that the spin-orbit splittings of 4f and 6p states of the Ba ion in BaF(2) are 0.7 +/- 0.1 and 1.4 +/- 0.1 eV, respectively.     

Raman and luminescence processes under the resonant two-photon excitation of an excitonic molecule in CuCl

Emission spectra and its decay time under the resonant two-photon excitation of an excitonic molecule in CuCl were observed using a tunable dye laser. The Raman and luminescence processes were separated from their different decay times. The ratios of these two processes were estimated for the transverse and longitudinal excitons, respectively, at various band widths of the exciting laser.     

Re-revision of the stereo structure of piperidine lactone,an intermediate in the synthesis of febrifugine

The stereo structure of piperidine lactone (3), an intermediate of the antimalarial agent febrifugine ((+)-1) prepared by a synthetic method, was re-revised to the cis-form from the trans-form.
