Alkylation of benzyl,cyclopropylmethyl and allyl acetates with trialkylaluminum. A stereochemical study

The title reaction is found synthetically useful and the stereochemical sudy has revealed that carbocationic intermediates are involved in the reaction of endo-2-acetoxy-norcarane, its epimer, and acetates of cis- and trans-carveol with trimethylaluminum.     

Photochromism of mixed crystals containing bisthienyl-, bisthiazolyl-, and bisoxazolylethene derivatives

Single crystals composed of two or three different kinds of diarylethenes, having similar geometrical structures but different colors in the closed-ring isomers, 1,2-bis(2-methyl-5-phenyl-3-thienyl)perfluorocyclopentene (1a), 1,2-bis(5-methyl-2-phenyl- 4-thiazolyl)perfluorocyclopentene (2a), and 1,2-bis(5-methyl-2-phenyl-4-oxazolyl)perfluorocyclopentene (3a) have been prepared in an attempt to form single crystals which exhibit different colors, depending on illumination wavelengths. When 1a and 2a are mixed in ethanol and the content of 2a in the feed is higher than that of 1a, only a needle-shaped crystal is obtained. The crystal shape is similar to that of 2a. On the other hand, high content of 1a in the feed leads to formation of a block-shaped crystal, of which the shape is similar to that of 1a. At a feed ratio of 1:1 for 1a and 2a, two types of crystals such as needle- and block-shapes are obtained from the same batch. Mixed crystals composed of three kinds of derivatives 1a/2a/3a have also been prepared. A crystal composed of the three derivatives in the molar ratio of 32 (1a):53 (2a):15 (3a) was obtained. X-ray analysis proved that 1a and 3a are packed in the crystal lattice of 2a. The mixed crystal 1a/2a/3a changed color from colorless to yellow, red, and blue upon irradiation with light of appropriate wavelengths.     

Thermal decomposition product of 1,2-bis(2-methyl-1-benzofuran-3-yl)perfluorocyclopentene

1,2-Bis(2-methyl-1-benzofuran-3-yl)perfluorocyclopentene shows photochromism in n-hexane at room temperature. We have identified a new compound produced by the thermal decomposition in a mixture of cis- and trans-decahydronaphthalene above 100?°C in the absence of light.     

Efficient preparation of monohydrosilanes using palladium-catalyzed Si-C bond formation

The arylation of dihydrosilanes with aryl iodides or heteroaryl iodides in the presence of a palladium catalyst provides the corresponding monohydrosilanes in good to high yield. Moderate to good yields are obtained even in the presence of a variety of reactive functional groups, such as -NH2, -OH, or -CN, without their protection.     

Competing supramolecular assembly of amphiphiles to form micelles or pseudorotaxanes

[reaction: see text] Micelles of an amphiphile that encapsulate the added dye in water can be released, upon addition of alpha-CD, to form pseudorotaxane. The equilibrium between the micelles and the pseudorotaxanes and the absorption spectra of solution are controlled by temperature reversibly.     

Calyciphylline D, a novel alkaloid with an unprecedented fused-pentacyclic skeleton from Daphniphyllum calycinum

Calyciphylline D (1), a novel Daphniphyllum alkaloid with an unprecedented fused-pentacyclic skeleton containing a 8-azatricyclo[4.2.1.0.4,8]nonane ring system, has been isolated from the leaves of Daphniphyllum calycinum (Daphniphyllaceae), and the structure and relative stereochemistry were elucidated on the basis of spectroscopic data.     

Poly(l‐lactic acid)‐modified silica stationary phase for reversed‐phase and hydrophilic interaction liquid chromatography

Poly(l ‐lactic acid) is a linear aliphatic thermoplastic polyester that can be produced from renewable resources. A poly(l ‐lactic acid)‐modified silica stationary phase was newly prepared by amide bond reaction between amino groups on aminopropyl silica and carboxylic acid groups at the end of the poly(l ‐lactic acid) chain. The poly(l ‐lactic acid)‐silica column was characterized in reversed‐phase liquid chromatography and hydrophilic interaction liquid chromatography with the use of different mobile phase compositions. The poly(l ‐lactic acid)‐silica column was found to work in both modes, and the retention of test compounds depending on acetonitrile content exhibited “U‐shaped” curves, which was an indicator of reversed‐phase liquid chromatography/hydrophilic interaction liquid chromatography mixed‐mode retention behavior. In addition, carbonyl groups included into the poly(l ‐lactic acid) backbone work as an electron‐accepting group toward a polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon and provide π–π interactions.     

Organocatalytic asymmetric synthesis of quinine and quinidine

Quinine and quinidine were synthesized by a highly enantio- and stereoselective approach starting from a proline-catalyzed asymmetric cycloaldolization of benzyl bis(2-formylethyl)carbamate which gave a 70:30 mixture of (3R,4R)-N-Cbz-3-hydroxymethyl-4-hydroxypiperidine (96% ee) and its 4S-epimer (92% ee) in 94% yield after in situ NaBH₄ reduction.
