Application of Automatic Chromatic Dispersion Compensation for Realization of All-Optical Network

We have studied the algorithm for the automatic chromatic dispersion compensation using bit error rate (BER) and Q-factor optimization for realization of dynamically reconfigurable all-optical network. We have made sure good performance using the compensation system by laboratory experiments.     

Synthesis and anti-HIV-1 activity of novel 10-thiaisoalloxazines,a structural analog of C-5 and/or C-6 substituted pyrimidine acyclonucleoside

A series of novel 10-thiaisoalloxazine derivatives bearing an alkoxymethyl or benzyloxymethyl moiety at the N-1 position has been synthesized through the bromination of 1-substituted-5-hydroxyuracils and subsequent condensation with aminobenzenethiol in a one-pot reaction. Contrary to the previous report, the formation of intermediary 5,6-diethoxy-5-hydroxy-5,6-dihydrouracil seems to be not the necessary factor for the formation of the thiaisoalloxazines, since the reaction proceeds in tetrahydrofuran (THF) or acetonitrile far more smoothly than in ethanol. The anti-human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-1 activity of the resulted thiaisoalloxazine derivatives was evaluated in lymphocyte cells based on the inhibitory activity against the viral-induced cytopathic activity. Among the derivatives, compounds 6, 7, and 8 bearing an alkoxymethyl moiety at the N-1 position exhibited modest inhibitory activity towards the cytotopathic effect of HIV-1.     

Fuzzy logic in measurements

Our main interest in this paper is to translate from “natural language” into “system theoretical language”. This is of course important since a statement in system theory can be analyzed mathematically or computationally. We assume that, in order to obtain a good translation, “system theoretical language” should have great power of expression. Thus we first propose a new frame of system theory, which includes the concepts of “measurement” as well as “state equation”. And we show that a certain statement in usual conversation, i.e., fuzzy modus ponens with the word “very”, can be translated into a statement in the new frame of system theory. Though our result is merely one example of the translation from “natural language” into “system theoretical language”, we believe that our method is fairly general.     

Corelationship between local structure and water purifying ability of iron-containing waste glasses

A relationship between the structure and water purifying ability of waste glass prepared from household garbage and Fe₂O₃ was examined by ⁵⁷Fe-Mössbauer and induced coupled plasma (ICP) measurements. From the Debye temperature of waste glass, Fe^II proved to be loosely bound in the glass network as a network modifier. Dissolution amount of Fe^III into artificial drain can be controlled from 0.14 to 0.35 mg/l by changing the Fe₂O₃ content. It proved that chemical oxygen demand (COD) decreases in proportion to the content of Fe^III, indicating that iron causes decomposition of organic and phosphorus compounds.     

Synthesis of glycosaminoglycans via enzymatic polymerization

Hyaluronic acid and chondroitin were successfully synthesized as representative molecules of glucosaminoglycans and galactosaminoglycans found in a glycosaminoglycan family via enzymatic polymerization catalyzed by testicular hyaluronidases. A newly designed N-acetylhyalobiuronate oxazoline derivative with a β-D -glucuronyl-(1→3)-N-acetyl-D -glucosamine disaccharide structure served as a transition-state analogue substrate monomer for the enzyme, giving rise to artificial hyaluronic acid in 52% yields with a number-average molecular weight of 1.35 × 10⁴ through ring-opening polyaddition in a perfect regioselective and stereoselective manner. A novel N-acetylchondrosine oxazoline derivative with a β-D -glucuronyl-(1→3)-N-acetyl-D -galactosamine disaccharide structure also acted as a transition-state analogue substrate monomer for the enzyme, yielding artificial chondroitin in 35% yields with a number-average molecular weight of 2.5 × 10³. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Efficient synthesis of 1-deoxy-azasugars as useful synthetic tools

1-Deoxy-azasugars are efficiently prepared from sugar-lactones using a stereoinversion process and they are applied to the synthesis of a natural product.     

On-line liquid chromatography and circular dichroism detection of stereo-isomers of alpha-tocopherol derivatives generated by an electrochemical reaction

The electrochemical oxidation of (+/-)-alpha-tocopherol on a porous graphite electrode was performed in the presence of methanol, and successive separation and detection of the products were performed by an on-line liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry system. Three products were identified, one of which was determined to be alpha-tocopheryl quinone, because its m/z was 469 [M+Na](+). The other two products showed identical mass and UV spectra, and were suspected to be diastereomers of 9-methoxy-alpha-tocopheron, because their molecular weights were m/z 483 [M+Na](+), and also because it is known that the chemical oxidation of alpha-tocopherol by benzoyl peroxide or N-bromosuccinimide in the presence of methanol should provide 9-methoxy-alpha-tocopheron. To confirm that these two compounds were diastereomers, a circular dichroism detector was used. The signs of both peaks detected by the circular dichroism detector at 230 nm were opposite. In addition to observations of identical mass and ultraviolet spectra, these results indicated that the two products were diastereomers of 9-methoxy-alpha-tocopheron, whose stereochemistry is different at the newly generated chiral center of the 9-position. The on-line use of a circular dichroism detector with an electrochemical cell/liquid chromatography system may expand the utility of the system to study the metabolism of a chiral drug.     

Raman spectra of anthracene negative ions in tetrahydrofuran solution

Raman spectra of anthracene mono- and di-negative ions in tetrahydrofuran solution were obtained by HeNe and Ar⁺ laser exciting lines. In addition to some frequency shifts from neutral anthracene, remarkable enhancement of intensities by the resonance Raman effect was observed for many aromatic ring vibrations.
