Artificial nucleosides possessing metal binding sites at the 3'- and 5'-positions of the deoxyribose moieties

This paper describes a convenient synthetic procedure for nucleoside mimics, 1-6, in which the 3',5'-hydroxy groups of natural 2'-deoxythymidine or 2'-deoxyadenosine are replaced by thiol, amine, or alkylthiol groups. Such nucleosides would be built up into a single DNA strand with cooperative participation of metal coordination, where internucleoside linkages are replaced by metal complexation motifs. The X-ray crystal structure and complexation behaviors of 3',5'-dithiothymidine, 1, with Au(I) are also reported.

Good ideals in Gorenstein local rings

Let be an -primary ideal in a Gorenstein local ring (, ) with , and assume that contains a parameter ideal in as a reduction. We say that is a good ideal in if is a Gorenstein ring with . The associated graded ring of is a Gorenstein ring with if and only if . Hence good ideals in our sense are good ones next to the parameter ideals in . A basic theory of good ideals is developed in this paper. We have that is a good ideal in if and only if and . First a criterion for finite-dimensional Gorenstein graded algebras over fields to have nonempty sets of good ideals will be given. Second in the case where we will give a correspondence theorem between the set and the set of certain overrings of . A characterization of good ideals in the case where will be given in terms of the goodness in their powers. Thanks to Kato's Riemann-Roch theorem, we are able to classify the good ideals in two-dimensional Gorenstein rational local rings. As a conclusion we will show that the structure of the set of good ideals in heavily depends on . The set may be empty if , while is necessarily infinite if and contains a field. To analyze this phenomenon we shall explore monomial good ideals in the polynomial ring in three variables over a field . Examples are given to illustrate the theorems.

     

Finite Modules of Finite Injective Dimension Over a Noetherian Algebra

Let R be a commutative Noetherian ring. Let P(R) (respectively,I(R)) be the category of all finite R-modules of finite projective(respectively, injective) dimension. Sharp [9] constructed acategory equivalence between I(R) and P(R) for certain Cohen–Macaulaylocal rings R. Thus many properties about finite modules offinite projective dimension can be connected with those of finiteinjective dimension through this equivalence.     

Photoinduced dissociation reactions of silver fluoride cluster ions

Photoinduced dissociation in the ultraviolet region has been investigated for Ag _nF _n-1 ⁺ cluster ions. Photodissociation spectrum of Ag₂F⁺ in the energy of 3.8–5.6 eV exhibits several sharp bands corresponding to the transition to electronically excited states. In this dissociation, only the Ag₂ ⁺ ion was observed as a fragment ion. Theoretical calculation indicates that the parent Ag₂F⁺ ion has a linear Ag-F-Ag equilibrium geometries in the ground and excited states. Since conformational changes by excitation of bending vibration are necessary for the fragmentation of an F atom, this indicates that production of Ag₂ ⁺ from Ag₂F⁺ is a result of internal conversion and following conformational changes.     

Inlet throttling effect on the boiling two-phase flow stability in a natural circulation loop with a chimney

 Experiments have been conducted to investigate an effect of inlet restriction on the thermal-hydraulic stability. A Test facility used in this study was designed and constructed to have non-dimensional values that are nearly equal to those of natural circulation BWR. Experimental results showed that driving force of the natural circulation at the stability boundary was described as a function of heat flux and inlet subcooling independent of inlet restriction. In order to extend experimental database regarding thermal-hydraulic stability to different inlet restriction, numerical analysis was carried out based on the homogeneous flow model. Stability maps in reference to the core inlet subcooling and heat flux were presented for various inlet restrictions using the above-mentioned function. Instability region during the inlet subcooling shifted to the higher inlet subcooling with increasing inlet restriction and became larger with increasing heat flux. Received on 17 January 2000     

Dependence on substrate topography of growth of nanosized dendritic structures in an electron-beam-induced deposition process

Nanometer-sized W-dendrites are fabricated on Al₂O₃ substrates with an electron-beam-induced deposition process. Dependence of growth of nanodendrite on surface topography is investigated with transmission electron microscopy. It is confirmed that the nanodendrite grows on convex surfaces but not around a hole on a substrate. These are attributed to different distribution of charges on surfaces with different topographies during electron beam irradiation when charges are produced on the surface due to emission of second electrons. The charges accumulate on convex surface and do not distribute around a hole. Therefore, the nanodendrite grows on the former and not on the latter.
