SYNTHESIS OF STYRENIC TONER PARTICLES BY SPG EMULSIFICATION TECHNIQUE

This research studied the initiator efficiency for producing polymeric particles of poly(styrene-co-methylmethacrylate) copolymers by a Shirasu porous glass membrane (SPG) emulsification technique followed by suspensioncopolymerization. BPO, ADVN, and AIBN were used as initiators and we found that BPO is the most suitable initiator.Copolymers for various feed ratios of styrene/methyl methacrylate were thus synthesized by benzoyl peroxide, and theircopolymer particle size, molecular weight distribution and particle size distribution were characterized. Then n-BMA or 2-EHMA was added as the third monomer to decrease the terpolymer glass transition temperature. This article describes thepreparation technique, recipes and polymerization conditions for producing both copolymer and terpolymer panicles, particlesize changes, the corresponding particle morphologies and glass transition temperatures.     

Synthesis and applications of porous spg (shirasu porous glass) microspheres

Fairly uniform porous microspheres of poly(styrene) (PS) and poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) were synthesized using a particular microporous glass membrane (SPG). Average diameters of these spheres are from 2.5 to 38 μm with the coefficient of variation (CV) around 10%. A maximum specific surface area of 370 m² /g was achieved. Uniform dispersion of MMA droplets was successfully prepared only when the swelling process reported by Higuchi and Misra was adopted. Two potential applications, one as a packing material for column chromatography, and the other as a carrier of enzyme immobilization, were demonstrated.     

Fundamental frequency and sound pressure level of phonation in pathological states

The fundamental frequency (F₀) for the habitual pitch (F_0HAB), F₀ for the lowest physiological tone (F_0L), F₀ for the highest physiological tone (F_0H), F₀ range of phonation (F₀ Rg), sound pressure level (SPL) for habitual loudness (SPL_HAB), SPL for the softest tone (SPL_S), SPL for the loudest tone (SPL_L), and SPL range of phonation (SPL Rg) were measured in 40 normal adult subjects and 1,563 voice patients with varying diseases. F_0H, F₀ Rg, SPL_L, and SPL Rg were decreased in many disease groups. F_0HAB and F_0L varied. SPL_HAB and SPL_S were increased in some disease groups. F₀-related parameters reflected effects of treatments in the cases with polyp, Reinke's edema, epithelial hyperplasia, carcinoma, and paralysis. Effects of treatments were manifested in SPL-related parameters in the cases with nodule, polyp, carcinoma, and paralysis.
