A crystal transition in poly(γ-n-alkyl L-glutamate)s

A thermally reversible crystal transition was found for γ-helical poly(γ-n-alkyl L -glutamate)s (alkyl = ethyl, propyl, butyl, and amyl). The transition temperature is higher than that of the side-chain mechanical dispersion, and decreases from 115 to ?5°C, as the alkyl groups become longer. The transition in poly(γ-n-propyl L -glutamate) is clearly first order. The structures were analyzed by x-ray diffraction at various temperatures. It is noteworthy that the pseudohexagonal form observed below the transition temperature is less ordered than the hexagonal form at higher temperatures. The mechanism of this transition is discussed.     

Magnetic anisotropy of the antiferroquadrupole phase in Ce0.50La0.50B6

Magnetic phase diagrams for antiferroquadrupole (AFQ) phase II and antiferromagnetic (AFM) phase III in Ce0.50La0.50B6 with a Gamma(8) ground state have been investigated by ultrasonic measurements. The hybrid magnet (Gama) in the National Institute for Materials Science was employed for high-field measurements up to 30 T and a 3He-4He dilution refrigerator was used for low-temperature experiments down to 20 mK. The phase boundary from paramagnetic phase I to AFQ phase II under [001] magnetic fields closes at H(I-II) approximately 29 T, while the boundary is still open under fields along the [110] and [111] directions even up to 30 T. This anisotropic character of phase II in fields is consistent with the theoretical calculation based on the O(xy)-type AFQ ordering. We also found that AFM phase III reduces considerably in fields turning from the [001] to [110] and [111] directions.     

A stable dialkylphosphinyl radical

Dialkylphosphinyl radical 1 was synthesized as thermally stable yellow crystals and found to be monomeric both in solution and in the solid state. EPR spectrum showed that the spin density of 1 is mainly localized on the 3p orbital of the dicoordinated phosphorus atom. A distinct absorption band due to the electronic transition from nonbonding electron pair orbital to singly occupied 3p orbital on the phosphorus atom of 1 was observed at 445 nm in solution. Phosphinyl radical 1 underwent facile reaction with carbon tetrachloride, hydrogen abstraction, and a unique reaction with a persistent radical, galvinoxyl, giving a cyclic phosphaalkene and a silylether.     

Novel heterotetranuclear V2Mo2 or V2W2 complexes with 4,4'-di-tert-butyl-2,2'-bipyridine: syntheses, crystal structures, and catalytic activities

Two novel heterotetranuclear complexes [V(2)O(2)(μ-MeO)(2)(μ-WO(4))(2)(4,4'-(t)Bubpy)(2)] (1) and [V(2)O(2)(μ-MeO)(2)(μ-MoO(4))(2)(4,4'-(t)Bubpy)(2)] (2) were synthesized, and the solid state structures of these complexes were revealed by single crystal X-ray crystallography. The heterotetranuclear complexes 1 and 2 are centrosymmetric building blocks, considered as consisting of two [VO(4,4'-(t)Bubpy)](3+) units bridged by μ-MO(4)(2-) (M = W or Mo) anions connected with methoxy groups. Furthermore, catalytic activities of 1 and 2 in the alcohol oxidation with hydrogen peroxide as terminal oxidants in water as solvent were investigated.     

Iridium‐Catalyzed Coupling Reaction of Primary Alcohols with 2‐Alkynes Leading to Hydroacylation Products

A novel iridium‐catalyzed intermolecular coupling reaction of primary alcohols or aldehydes with 2‐alkynes was successfully achieved with high regioselectivity to give hydroacylation products such as α,β‐unsaturated ketones in good yields. The mechanistic investigation of the reaction strongly indicated that the coupling proceeds through the initial formation of homoallylic alcohols followed by dehydrogenation to β,γ‐unsatutated ketones and then isomerisation, which leads to the hydroacylation products.     

Process development and large-scale synthesis of NK1 antagonist

A scaleable synthetic route is described to obtain 2-(4-acetylpiperadin-1-yl)-6-[3,5-bis(trifluoromethyl)phenylmethyl]-4-(2-methylphenyl)-6,7,8,9-tetrahydro-5H-pyrimido[4,5-b][1,5]oxazocin-5-one (1, KRP-103) as a neurokinin (NK)(1) antagonist. The key step in the synthesis is the intramolecular cyclization of N-[3,5-bis(trifluoromethyl)phenylmethyl]-N-(3-hydroxypropyl)-4-chloro-6-(2-methylphenyl)-2-methylthiopyrimidine-5-carboxamide (15) which was obtained by amide formation between 4-(2-methylphenyl)-2-methylthio-6-oxo-1,6-dihydropyrimidine-5-carboxylic acid (8) and 3-[3,5-bis(trifluoromethyl)phenylmethylamino]-1-propanol (3). Treatment of 15 with 1,8-diazabicyclo[5,4,0]undec-7-ene provided 6-[3,5-bis(trifluoromethyl)phenylmethyl]-4-(2-methylphenyl)-2-methylthio-6,7,8,9-tetrahydro-5H-pyrimido[4,5-b][1,5]oxazocin-5-one (6). This intermediate (6) is transformed into the candidate compound (1) by two steps; oxidation, and substitution reaction of the resultant sulfone (7) with 1-acetylpiperazine. This synthetic method is free of chromatographic purification and is amenable to large scale synthesis.     

Infrared-laser delivery system based on polymer-coated hollow fibers

Infrared Er : YAG laser delivery systems based on hollow fibers with an internal polymer layer has been developed. The system consists of a hollow fiber as the delivery medium, a launching coupler for effective coupling between the laser beam and the fiber, and a sealed hollow-fiber tip attached at the output end of the fiber. Fabrication process of the fiber and attachment of the delivery system is reported.
