??This article provides the readers with an introduction to thespectral theory of ergodic one dimensional Schrodinger operators. The theoremsdeveloped by the author are mainly discussed and their proofs are given in detail.     

Finite difference simulation of nonlinear waves generated by ships of arbitrary three-dimensional configuration

A modified marker-and-cell method is developed in order to simulate nonlinear wave making in the near-field of ships of arbitrary three-dimensional (3D) configuration advancing steadily in deep water. The 3D Navier-Stokes equations are solved by a finite difference scheme under proper boundary conditions. Efforts are particularly focused on the treatment of the boundary conditions on the body surface and free surface which have complicated 3D configurations. An orthogonal cell system with more than 70,000 cells is used for the computation of the waves and flow field of ships. The agreement of computational results with experiment is good, and it promises effectiveness for engineering purposes.     

An MO-theoretical calculation of solvent effect upon the NH3 + HF = NH4F reaction

An ab initia molecular orbital calculation was done as to a reacting system, NH₃+HF=NH₄F, with the inclusion of the solvent effect as the origin of dipolar field. The reactants were assumed to stay in dimers, (NH₃)₂ and (HF)₂, in advance to the reaction, and the respective partners of two reactants were regarded as point dipoles. The system was stabilized to some extent by two dipoles adopted. A study of configuration analysis on this system was made with and without the dipoles. Their effect was found to be favorable for proceeding of the reaction.     

Nickel-catalyzed arylcyanation of alkynes

A nickel catalyst coordinated by trimethylphosphine is found to effect the addition reaction of Ar-CN bonds in aromatic nitriles across alkynes to give rise to various beta-arylalkenenitriles.     

Multisupergravity from latticized extra dimension

The construction of the linearized four-dimensional multisupergravity from five-dimensional linearized supergravity with discretized fifth dimension is presented. The one-loop vacuum energy is evaluated when (anti)periodic boundary conditions are chosen for (bosons) fermions, respectively, or vice versa. It is proposed that the relation between discretized M-theory and strings may be found in the same fashion.     

Time-domain sweeplets for acoustic measurements

This paper proposes new types of time-domain generated sine sweeps for impulse response measurements. A general time-domain analytical formulation method, combined with numeric phase alignment and frequency-domain inverse filtering is presented. It is applied to derive three new families of controllable spectrum sine sweeps called sweeplets, capable of matching 1/f^β background noises, producing finite band defocusing and single frequency focusing shapes. Mathematical properties concentrating on practical control of the signal shapes are examined. Effects of various perturbations, such as stationary and transient background noise, harmonic distortion and finite length are presented. Applicability of the proposed method is experimentally verified by a room acoustic measurement example.     

Cubic phases of binary systems of 4′-n-tetradecyloxy-3′-nitrobiphenyl-4-carboxylic acid (ANBC-14)-n-alkane

The phase behaviour of the binary systems 4′- ⁿ -tetradecyloxy-3′-nitrobiphenyl-4-carboxylic acid (ANBC-14)- ⁿ -alkane ( ⁿ -tetradecane or ⁿ -hexadecane) was investigated by differential scanning calorimetry, polarizing optical microscopy, and X-ray diffraction. The phase behaviour was a function of temperature ( ^T ) and the effective carbon number of the system ( ^n*), where ^n* involves carbon atoms both from the alkoxy group of ANBC-14 and from the ⁿ -alkane added. ANBC-14 shows no cubic phase, but the addition of ⁿ -alkane induced cubic phases when ^n*≧c. 15. An interesting point is that the type of cubic phase is ^Ia 3 ^d for 15^≦n*≦17, while an ^Im 3 ^m type is formed for 18^≦n*≦20. Furthermore, for ^n* = 22, two types of cubic phase, one with ^Im 3 ^m symmetry in the low temperature region and the other with ^Ia 3 ^d in the high temperature region, were observed both on heating and cooling. The phase diagram with respect to ^T and ^n* is very similar to that of pure one-component ANBC- ⁿ , which is a function of ^T and the number of carbon atoms in the alkoxy group ⁿ .     

Triggered single-photon emission and cross-correlation properties in InAlAs quantum dot

Triggered single-photon generation from InAlAs quantum dot (QD) was demonstrated for the first time. Emitted photon energy coincides with high detection efficiency range of Si single-photon detectors, which is highly suitable for free-space communication. Single-QD spectroscopy and crossed photon correlation measurements unambiguously revealed that several emitting lines observed in a single mesa structure originated from the identical QD, and two temporary competing decay processes associated with neutral states and charged states were identified. Presence of the competing process is also inferred from an analysis of steady-state photoluminescence intensities. Formation process of charged exciton in QD is also discussed.     

Mesogenicity of testosterone and estrone derivatives

Mesogenicity of 3β, 17β-bis(4-n-alkoxybenzoyloxy) androstene homologues (BABA) (carbon No. of alkoxy group, n, = 1-10) were studied by use of D.S.C. and a polarized microscopy. It was found that the n = 4-10 compounds of BABA have one cholesteric mesophase with high thermal stability enantiotropically, and that the n = 1-3 compounds decompose just above the melting point. Mesogenicities of BABA and several testosterone and estrone derivatives were also discussed from the perspective of chemical structure and shape. The presence of an intramolecular long-range dipole coupling in two alkoxybenzoyloxy chromophores is found in BABA from CD spectral studies.
