Blue laser lithography for making antireflective submicron structures on silicon

The application of blue laser lithography for creating antireflective submicron structures on a crystalline silicon substrate was evaluated. The assembled blue laser lithography system was obtained by modifying a commercial blue laser optical pickup head and consisting of a 405-nm-wavelength blue laser and a 0.85-numerical-aperture objective lens. Si substrates were patterned with submicron column patterns of various periods and aspect ratios by blue laser lithography using a sputtered Ge-Sb-Sn-O layer as a resist. The reflectance of the patterned Si substrate decreased to 3% on average in the 300–1000 nm wavelength range, with a low sensitivity to the angle of incident light. Such patterned substrates showed potential for application in crystalline Si solar cells.     

On a multi-threshold compound Poisson process perturbed by diffusion

We consider a multi-layer compound Poisson surplus process perturbed by diffusion and examine the behaviour of the Gerber–Shiu discounted penalty function. We derive the general solution to a certain second order integro-differential equation. This permits us to provide explicit expressions for the Gerber–Shiu function depending on the current surplus level. The advantage of our proposed approach is that if the diffusion term converges to zero, the above-mentioned explicit expressions converge to those under the classical compound Poisson model, provided that the same initial conditions apply. This is subsequently illustrated by an extended example related to the probability of ultimate ruin.     

Synthesis of Alkyllysophospholipid Analogues with Readily Functionalized 1-O-Alkyl Side Chain

Synthesis of alkyllysophospholipid analogues 5a and 5b are described. These lipids have imide functional group attached on the terminal of 1-O-alkyl side chain suitable for further manipulations. Our approach features the use of mesylate 8 in which the mesyl group serves both as protecting group and electrophile.     

Evaluation of runaway thermal reactions of di-<Emphasis Type="Italic">tert</Emphasis>-butyl peroxide employing calorimetric approaches

Di-tert-butyl peroxide (DTBP) is an organic peroxide (OP) which has widespread use in the various chemical industries. In the past, thermal runaway reactions of OPs have been caused by their general thermal instability or by reactive incompatibility in storage or operation, which can create potential for thermal decomposition reaction. In this study, differential scanning calorimetry was applied to measure the heat of decomposition reactions, which can contribute to understand the reaction characteristics of DTBP. Vent sizing package 2 was also employed to evaluate rates of increase for temperature and pressure in decomposition reactions, and then the thermokinetic parameters of DTBP were estimated. Finally, hazard characteristics of the gassy system containing DTBP, specifically with respect to thermal criticality, were clearly identified.     

Azine Synthesis via Nitrogen-Nitrogen Bond Formation

Imine anions, generated by reaction of nitrites with organometallic reagents, are dimerized to form symmetrical azines through the use of CuI and t-butyl peroxybenzoate.     

Numerical study on InGaAsN/GaAs multiple-quantum-well laser with GaAsP and GaAsN barriers

In this work, the multiple-quantum-well InGaAsN laser structures with indirect-GaAsP and direct-GaAsN barriers are investigated by using LASTIP simulation program. We vary the quantum-well number, from 1 to 5, to find appropriate barrier material for InGaAsN laser structures. The simulation results show that InGaAsN laser structure has higher characteristic temperature regardless of what quantum-well number is if the indirect-GaAsP barrier is utilized. Furthermore, for InGaAsN laser structure, the usage of indirect-GaAsP barrier is beneficial for reducing the threshold current when the quantum-well number is from 1 to 2 and the usage of direct-GaAsN barrier is beneficial for reducing the threshold current when the quantum-well number is from 3 to 5.     

Saccharomyces cerevisiae oxidosqualene‐lanosterol cyclase: A chemistry–biology interdisciplinary study of the protein's structure–function–reaction mechanism relationships

The oxidosqualene cyclases (EC 5.4.99‐) constitute a family of enzymes that catalyze diverse cyclization/rearrangement reactions of (3S)‐2,3‐oxidosqualene into a distinct array of sterols and triterpenes. The relationship between the cyclization mechanism and the enzymatic structure is extremely complex and compelling. This review covers the historical achievements of biomimetic studies and current progress in structural biology, molecular genetics, and bioinformatics studies to elucidate the mechanistic and structure–function relationships of the Saccharomyces cerevisiae oxidosqualene‐lanosterol cyclase‐catalyzed cyclization/rearrangement reaction. © 2008 The Japan Chemical Journal Forum and Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Convex underestimation for posynomial functions of positive variables

The approximation of the convex envelope of nonconvex functions is an essential part in deterministic global optimization techniques (Floudas in Deterministic Global Optimization: Theory, Methods and Application, 2000). Current convex underestimation algorithms for multilinear terms, based on arithmetic intervals or recursive arithmetic intervals (Hamed in Calculation of bounds on variables and underestimating convex functions for nonconvex functions, 1991; Maranas and Floudas in J Global Optim 7:143–182, (1995); Ryoo and Sahinidis in J Global Optim 19:403–424, (2001)), introduce a large number of linear cuts. Meyer and Floudas (Trilinear monomials with positive or negative domains: Facets of convex and concave envelopes, pp. 327–352, (2003); J Global Optim 29:125–155, (2004)), introduced the complete set of explicit facets for the convex and concave envelopes of trilinear monomials with general bounds. This study proposes a novel method to underestimate posynomial functions of strictly positive variables.     

A rich spectrum from potassium vapor on the 42 S 1/2−32 D 5/2 two-photon resonance

A rich emission spectrum in the wavelength range 300–600 nm, including 50 spectral lines, has been observed as a pulsed dye laser is tuned to the 4² S _1/2–3² D _5/2 two-photon resonance in potassium vapor. It is found that many kinds of mechanisms, including energy pooling, harmonic generation, quadrupole radiation, excitation transfer, and multiwave mixing etc., are involved in producing these lines.
